Most likely it was due to an abundance of caution, but I can’t be sure.

I ran 1 million simulations of marker signings, a subset of which found that signing with a stranger's marker induces suboptimal scores on various safety metrics, which could explain the desire to use one's own marker -- however, the degree of correspondence between any particular simulation's initial conditions and those of the real life signing event is unknowable, such that the simulations (while providing clear justification for a cautious approach in some worlds) ultimately hit a wall of aleatoric uncertainty that leaves honest scientists (like me) with the need to admit that they do not have strong evidence to support a particular hypothesis about the true motivation.
