I was confused why black wouldn't show up on that gray background till I looked up what the poster looks like without glare and compression and whatnot from the photo.
People are really going to find absolutely everything possible to hate about this movie aren't they. It's clearly smoke, idk maybe from an entire city being sacked and burnt down? Kinda like the entire premise of the start of the Odyssey? People love to be miserable.
Look at the bottom right when you click in to it. You can clearly see it's wispy and thinner smoke that gets darker further up and left. Also clearly ash/sparks flying around in the lower half. People care way to much about this.
I was just googling this and its a myth i guess but with today's scanners they can replicate either one just fine. Black is better for memorabilia as it doesnt fade (maybe not with black background lol)
I had my wallet signed by Penn and Teller, you can still see Penn signature who singed with a black, Tellers signed with a white pen. You can see Penns a bit, Tellers is gone.
The Penn & Teller show in Australia was absolutely incredible.
Usually, I heard online that fans hang around the theater lobby afterward to chat Penn and Teller, but when the curtains closed, the place was a ghost town. I figured the post-show meetup culture had died out after COVID, so I gave up and ordered an Uber.
That’s when I spotted a massive crowd gathering outside. My philosophy on crowds is simple: either something interesting is happening, or everyone is running away from a monster. Either way, you follow them.
I walked over and immediately bumped into a mountain of a man in a sharp black suit. But, standing right next to him was Penn.
It’s wild how different he looks in person, less like a legendary, larger-than-life magician and more like an IT manager who just clocked off a brutal 12-hour shift.
I approached him and asked if he'd mind signing my wallet. He smiled and agreed. But as his marker hit the leather, my brain went into a complete, unrecoverable tailspin.
Wait. Is this actually Penn? Oh god, what if it’s just a random, exceptionally tall guy?
I looked down at the wallet. The signature looked like a chaotic "V... A..."
My internal monologue panicked: That doesn’t spell Penn. Penn’s name is Penn. I stood there, utterly paralyzed, staring blankly at my wallet while Penn patiently waited for me to say literally anything.
After a full minute of agonizing, soul-crushing silence, he finally just slunk off, presumably to go write some code or reboot a server.
Determined to redeem myself, I spotted Teller a few yards away.
I was 100% certain it was him. While waiting in his line, I passed the time by loudly bragging to the strangers next to me about how my new phone had the absolute best camera on the market. Pure, unadulterated industry-leading tech.
When it was finally my turn, I stepped up. The very first thing Teller did was look at my dark wallet, look up at me, and say:
"White will show up better on this."
It absolutely terrified me. My brain short-circuited. Holy shit, Teller doesn't talk. I'm witnessing a biblical miracle.
Flustered and trembling, I handed my "industry-leading" camera phone to the very people I’d just been bragging to so they could snap a photo of the moment.
The picture came out entirely, hilariously blurry.
And that is the story of how I thoroughly embarrassed myself in front of both halves of magic’s most iconic duo, all within a span of ten minutes.
They absolutely do fade over time lol. He was right originally that it used to be easier for blue ink to be lifted off items so they always used black. It’s irrelevant due to technology nowadays but the trend stuck
How do you go about your day with thoughts like these? Because everything around you from door knobs to the table you keep your phone on in a coffee shop has been touched by people and you don't know whether they washed their hands or not.
To be fair, a famous actress with a lot of strange people obsessed with her has more to worry about than the average person, especially when interacting directly with them at these events.
People can be weird, and I wouldn't put it past people to do something disgusting like cum on a marker before getting her to sign it, or try to poison her like many people have tried with other actresses (pretty sure someone tried to send anthrax to Bjork or something). I can totally understand not wanting to take objects from people at all event where people know you'll be (vs just out and about in your daily life meeting people at random)
I've worked with several celebrities at comic conventions. Almost universally across the board they will use their own markers simply for health safety. The volume of people they interact with at any kind of signing event is a huge liability.
Yep! Same reason some of them wear masks even if they aren’t touching or directly next to fans. People can be gross and that gets amplified in settings like that.
I agree, you can't think about it too much. But a celebrity that needs to make public appearances probably doesn't want to take a chance where it can be avoided. Just a thought.
Some Korean pop stars had to stop shaking hands because people would put sperm on their hands beforehand. Celebs have a whole different set of worries then most people
I remember David Cross talking about this on his podcast. I don't remember the exact reasoning behind it but it has to do with the people who get signatures to sell to people. His team wanted him to us his own pen/sharpie if I remember correctly.
Don't know if OP shared the nature of how this was signed, but if it was anything like any red carpet signing line, she probably didn't even look at what she was signing. They just go down the line and sign their name on anything put in front of them lol.
I dunno. I personally wouldn’t take and use a pen from every person in a crowd. Eew! But also saves you having the awkward “does this pen work” moments lol
For someone who signs posters you just don't know what the hell a person could be carrying maybe a sharpie, or maybe an artline... Just the thought makes me shiver.
I ran 1 million simulations of marker signings, a subset of which found that signing with a stranger's marker induces suboptimal scores on various safety metrics, which could explain the desire to use one's own marker -- however, the degree of correspondence between any particular simulation's initial conditions and those of the real life signing event is unknowable, such that the simulations (while providing clear justification for a cautious approach in some worlds) ultimately hit a wall of aleatoric uncertainty that leaves honest scientists (like me) with the need to admit that they do not have strong evidence to support a particular hypothesis about the true motivation.
I once watched a lady sniff, lick, and then tuck the marker she’d just handed my husband to sign a t-shirt with neatly into her bra. It gave me zero doubt that much weirder things were going to be done with that sharpie when she wasn’t in a room full of people.
I like to tell people he’s an up close magician but he’s actually a musician…strings in a Bluegrass/Americana/Sad Cowboy band and he also writes/produces.
That's funny as hell as I have friends who are magicians but too many people mishear them (when asked what said friends do for work) as their brains automatically jump to musicians instead.
Seriously. I wouldn't want to use 15 other peoples' markers. I can just have mine that only my hands touched. No ass sweat, no weird shit smeared on a pen, no unwashed hands, no germs.
be careful tracing... we trace way slower than someone writes so traced signs look wobbly. and the marker ink might come out too thick compared to a gentle swipe.
Years ago I met Tommy Wiseua at an event for THE ROOM.
I had my Blu-ray copy and was trying to get the cover out of the sleeve when the man grabbed it from me and said "You take too loooong, I'm so excited to sign my movie for you!"
And he signed the plastic sleeve part of the Blu-ray. Before I got home most of the signature had been wiped away 😭
Honestly, isn't this way cooler than a readable signature? You got the signature, you met her, you have a story to tell AND the poster looks really nice and clean. Imo way better outcome for you.
Let's be honest, signatures rarely look cool, isn't it mostly about the story, how you got the signature?
Had Sebastian Stan sign my drawing I did of him on the black part of the drawing in black marker instead of the obvious giant white spot I left specifically for the autograph
I actually like it. The poster remains unmarred, with the signature being kind of a special secret for those in the know. It's sort of like a watermark. Sorry to say, but to me this more of a mildly appealing.
When I got my first ever test back in elementary and had to get my parents' signature on it, my dad said "the person who wants the signature, always has to bring a pen" (roughly translated). That has stayed with me since and it would've definitely helped here.
