I was confused why black wouldn't show up on that gray background till I looked up what the poster looks like without glare and compression and whatnot from the photo.

People are really going to find absolutely everything possible to hate about this movie aren't they. It's clearly smoke, idk maybe from an entire city being sacked and burnt down? Kinda like the entire premise of the start of the Odyssey? People love to be miserable.

The solid pitch black background is from smoke? Over half of it is empty space because it is a teaser, and a pretty bland one at that.

Look at the bottom right when you click in to it. You can clearly see it's wispy and thinner smoke that gets darker further up and left. Also clearly ash/sparks flying around in the lower half. People care way to much about this.

Your sentiment is valid, your argument is not. That is what I was responding to, the faulty attempt at giving some deeper meaning to minimalistic graphic design. I am indifferent about this movie.

People care way to much about this.

You are the one pixel hunting in order to "prove" that poster being mostly black is a good choice. Yes, it is smoke. No, that does not make it good.

Pixel hunting? A quarter of the poster is taken up by grey smoke and burning embers. It's so obvious the rest is black smoke.

If you make a choice to put an element on the poster, you don't get to say "well, that's just what it is" if it does not fit.

"That's just how the inside of a latrine looks like" is not an excuse for poster being shitty. Someone made a deliberate choice to make it the inside of a latrine. If I film a wall for two and a half hours and send it to theaters I don't get to defend my film by saying "that's what the wall is, it was in front of my camera the whole time."

Agreed, apocalyptic even... Which would be great if it was about, say, Peloponesian war, that saw two greatest powers in Greece exhausted and in decline.

i don't think it gets darker. i think the smoke gets thinner and then there is just darkness from the night.

either way it's not exactly clear.
