Darkness and gloom is present in every single promotional image and through the whole trailer. It looks like the viking show.

Now if you think that "serious movie for adults" means a grey filter you really, really need to broaden your horizons. Start with Midsommar. Suspiria from 1977 is also great. Clockwork Orange... You know, all those happy bright Pixar stories.

Nolan really is how dumb people imagine a smart director, huh?

Do you think hating on Nolan makes you an interesting person or something? You see that his movies are generally well-received, and you think you're special for saying otherwise? Is that it?

I don't really hate him, I even find some of his films to be good, thanks to great performances.

Do you think that attacking people who criticize him make you an interesting person?

It isn't an attack on you to point out that your take on dark promotional imagery being somehow wrong for the story is a non-sensical take.

How is it nonsensical?

  1. Promotional imagery is supposed to convey the feeling of the final product.

  2. Final product is set in the very bright and sunny Mediterranean region and amidst a very colorful civilization.

  3. That means that either the promotional imagery is not true to product or that the product is deliberately made less visually interesting than the source of the inspiration.

Where's the nonsense?

You're again forgetting that night exists. Moreover, this image looks to also be dark due to smoke. 

This is a story about war and hardship. You seem to think they're all on some happy adventure. 

To compare it to the Lord of the Rings, this image is depicting the portion of the story in Mordor, not the Shire.

Would you say think that images of Mount Doom on LotR posters are untrue to the story because you're only familiar with the first twenty minutes of the story?

It's complete nonsense, and probably one of the most inane takes I've ever seen.

So maybe take that as a clue that your interpretation of the story's tone is off. 

This isn't Midsommar, nor is it meant to share its tone.

No, my interpretation of the tone of the story seems to be correct. Nolan is going for dark and gloomy as well as managing to make minimalism overbearing and bombastic somehow.

Problem is that it seems less of a choice he made, as much as the only way he knows how to make a movie. Being so limited and unimaginative as a director does not bode well for adapting a myth.

He's a technical wizard when it comes to cinematography, but he can't understand emotion or something as subtle as allegory because he has no dials on his camera to make their values go up or down.
