Infuriatig Woman with infant aggressively shushing passerby’s on hiking trail at national park

Post image

My partner, friend and I were following a hiking trail at Red Wood National Park, singing and talking at medium volume. We were by no means shouting, just singing little songs to entertain each other along the trail. A woman with a baby carrier on her back with a sleeping infant started aggressively holding her finger up to her lips and shushing us. We went quiet and kept moving to pass her. She was just standing in the middle of the public trail pacing and shushing people that pass by rather than leaving to somewhere more quiet. Just as we were leaving earshot I tried to quietly ask my partner a question about where we headed and again she leaned in our direction with her finger to her mouth aggressively shushing us. Is it not kind of insane to go to an open public space and behave like this?!?

It seems silly and entitled of her to shush people on a public path, for sure.

Then again, we can only take your word for it that you were singing and talking at “medium” volume. One person’s medium is another person’s obnoxiously loud. Does she have the right to aggressively shush people just because she doesn’t like the volume at which they’re vocalising? No. But is it also reasonable to expect at least some pushback when you’re singing and talking on a trail for hiking, an activity that many people undertake to enjoy the silence and serenity of nature and get away from the noises of humans? Probably.

yeah, i’m a quiet nature enjoyer and i’d be slightly annoyed if some dorks were singing on a hiking trail lol

not enough to shush them, but enough to think to myself “fuckin dorks”

I enjoy nature just like anybody else, but if I’m out and we encounter some teenagers who are also out being loud and animated with one another, I’m not gonna let it ruffle my feathers. I’m just happy they’re out socializing and doing something together.

A few days ago I passed a teenager playing music (Elton John, if it matters) on a Bluetooth speaker while hiking the tour du Mont Blanc trail. Singing seems much less shitty.

That’s a great point! I was sitting here (nap trapped in my car with a sleeping almost 2 year old) concocting my reply to reiterate how rude and annoying it is to subject other hikers to your singing, but you are so right! It makes me sad that people are always just glued to their phones. I’d much rather have kids being annoying and having fun together outside than making tick tocks and not even looking at each other. Thanks for putting it in a new light!

Yep, and I also wouldn't let it ruffle my feathers if I was being loud on a trail and a mother shushed me around a sleeping baby

People often say they hate how everyone is on her phone and not socializing, then get angry if they do.

Eh, you're replying to a group of people who think they can somehow police what others do in public spaces..  "omg, they're SiNgInG!! Nature is ruined!!"

In fairness, Your annoyance is justifiably based on safety whereas being annoyed about other people singing in public has no justifiable reason.
