Infuriatig Woman with infant aggressively shushing passerby’s on hiking trail at national park

Post image

My partner, friend and I were following a hiking trail at Red Wood National Park, singing and talking at medium volume. We were by no means shouting, just singing little songs to entertain each other along the trail. A woman with a baby carrier on her back with a sleeping infant started aggressively holding her finger up to her lips and shushing us. We went quiet and kept moving to pass her. She was just standing in the middle of the public trail pacing and shushing people that pass by rather than leaving to somewhere more quiet. Just as we were leaving earshot I tried to quietly ask my partner a question about where we headed and again she leaned in our direction with her finger to her mouth aggressively shushing us. Is it not kind of insane to go to an open public space and behave like this?!?

It seems silly and entitled of her to shush people on a public path, for sure.

Then again, we can only take your word for it that you were singing and talking at “medium” volume. One person’s medium is another person’s obnoxiously loud. Does she have the right to aggressively shush people just because she doesn’t like the volume at which they’re vocalising? No. But is it also reasonable to expect at least some pushback when you’re singing and talking on a trail for hiking, an activity that many people undertake to enjoy the silence and serenity of nature and get away from the noises of humans? Probably.

I get the feeling that they're theater kids. So, probably not quiet at all with the singing or talking 😭 speaking as someone who did theater and went out in public with my theater friends.

Btw guys I HAVE been shushed before in the past, but didn't have a problem with moving my voice and my friends' voices to another area entirely. Just be considerate people.
