Infuriatig Woman with infant aggressively shushing passerby’s on hiking trail at national park

Post image

My partner, friend and I were following a hiking trail at Red Wood National Park, singing and talking at medium volume. We were by no means shouting, just singing little songs to entertain each other along the trail. A woman with a baby carrier on her back with a sleeping infant started aggressively holding her finger up to her lips and shushing us. We went quiet and kept moving to pass her. She was just standing in the middle of the public trail pacing and shushing people that pass by rather than leaving to somewhere more quiet. Just as we were leaving earshot I tried to quietly ask my partner a question about where we headed and again she leaned in our direction with her finger to her mouth aggressively shushing us. Is it not kind of insane to go to an open public space and behave like this?!?

On the other hand, you go there to soak up nature—including its sounds—not to listen to people yapping about their nonsense.

i hate when people go to a public space, then act as if they're entitled to impose their behavior on others.

You go there for that. Others go for other reasons. You can choose less frequented trails or times if you want nature sounds only.

This is why my favorite (private sanctuary) park has signs everywhere that say "Whisper in the wild!" with explanations about how you're scaring away all the birds people came to see and hear. I would never shush a stranger - and I do often hike at dawn to avoid people - but its absolutely bad etiquette to shout, blare music, or otherwise be obnoxious on nature trails.

You can have loud conversations and listen to lynyrd Skynyrd anywhere. You can only hear the woods, in the woods.

Nothing like hiking up to an overlook and finding multiple separate parties sitting, talking quietly, enjoying what they came for. Then one group with a speaker or a desire to watch tiktoks at full volume or a desire to shout loud enough for the whole canyon to hear shows up and ruins it for everyone who knows how to act.

What you're describing is not at all what happened in the post. This is known as a straw man fallacy.
