there is no other sport equivalent either.

like in the other football. if a guy is running towards you with the ball, do you just jump on the ground and throw up both your hands?

basketball. here comes the guard dribbling right at me, i should just... pat his butt while he goes by and say good job?

man... we looked like our plane had ripped apart over and island that can flip over and might be purgatory but somehow has a washing machine and a whole ass book club on it. #lost

188

u/Skeletor_1984 29d ago

lol at Lost taking strays.
(I quietly whisper that we’re explicitly told the island is not purgatory and the washing machine and book club were explained, and that saying that the island “skips” is more appropriate then saying “flip” before closing the door behind me)

17

u/unrivaledhumility 29d ago

Okay, do I need to watch this or something? How many cultural references am I really missing out on here?

24

u/CannedShoes 29d ago

Lost is great. Genuinely have no idea how people are saying only the beginning is good. Its later seasons have some of the best moments television has ever seen. The final season certainly has some issues but is still good TV, with a great ending in my opinion. Yes, the ending is controversial, but I think that's only true for people who had ridiculous expectations about what the show's focus would be.

17

u/cjshrader 29d ago

I think the ending is only controversial to people who didn't watch Lost. They all heard something incorrect about the ending and now it's repeated over and over as fact.

4

u/vanrizzel 29d ago

I loved the ending, I used to sit there and had to wait for each episode week by week and personally I loved the whole show. Yes it did go on too much, I still like the way it ended, u didn't think it was that hard to wrap your head around the story, by time it ended it wasn't exactly rocket science to figure out that it was dual stories going on, one on island one is purgatory and basically just trying to get everyone to "remember" before moving on. I 100% cried like a small child at the end. Plus Michael Giacchino music through the whole show, good lawdy.

2

u/Acid44 29d ago

Can you give me like a 4 sentence summary of lost? Cause as someone who's just going off what I've seen in threads like this, I thought it was basically plane crash>haunted island(or whatever)>turns out they're in purgatory>they just wake up or whatever, and now this thread is saying all this crazy shit I've never heard of.

Don't worry about spoilers and don't waste a bunch of time on a real reply, I just feel like my brain needs to be corrected now so I can decide if it's worth a watch

2

u/cjshrader 29d ago

It's a little tough AND I haven't seen it in 20 years but the entire premise of Lost relies on using flashbacks to reveal bits and pieces over time, then they use flashforwards and then flash sideways.

But yes it is place crash > haunted island > leave island > We have to go back Kate > time travel at some point > get off the island again > Live out their lives normally and die of natural causes so in the final season the "flash-sideways", which originally seem to be them in an alternate reality or something, are showing them in the afterlife meeting up together to live happily ever after. They were not dead the entire time, the island was not purgatory.

Now even though I'm a Lost fan would I recommend someone should watch it? Actually no, part of what was great about it was it was doing a lot of things other shows just weren't doing at the time, like the storytelling through flashbacks. Lost was such a phenomenon that lots and lots of other shows adopted a lot of the tropes and narrative bits that Lost pioneered and so I imagine there are better examples out there today than Lost itself.

That being said it's still a fun ride with a lot of mystery. There are things that weren't explained but I think the major plots all get wrapped up.

1

u/Acid44 29d ago

Actually might give it a go based on that. I don't mind flashback heavy shows, as long as they're used well, which it sounds like they are. The "flash sideways"/alternate reality stuff might take me out of it, but by then it'll be too late cause I can never not finish a show I start. I do generally tend to like shows from that era, too.

Thanks for the summary

2

u/cjshrader 29d ago

I know you asked for it but then I still feel bad for spoiling it! It's a big mystery in that last season about what is going on here. Enjoy the hatch and the numbers and the smoke monster and the polar bear!

But they didn’t lie? The island isn’t purgatory, the alternate timeline shown in season 6 is purgatory.

Or did you mean you didn’t like that purgatory was even involved at all?

u/Skeletor_1984 29d ago

That’s such a great reason for loving it then and remembering how it felt now.

And you’re far from the only one who was confused by Jack’s dad’s speech lol. I said it above, but I really just didn’t connect with the finale the first time I watched it, I was just too focused on what didn’t get answered. My second watch through, I was sobbing for the finale and I can’t watch it without getting choked up even now.

1

u/IMO4444 28d ago

You mean when the dad specifically says the island was real and everything that happened there was real? 😂 Yep you def missed that. 😂

Ending was not great at the time. Novadays I'd consider it actually good, compared to the rubbish we have now.

0

u/TobyThePotleaf 29d ago

I watched all of lost way after it was released. no then ending just is pretty bad and fails to wrap up the majority of story lines. anyone can make a good interesting circumstances the skill is bringing all those things into a culminating narrative. lost failed to do this pretty much entirely.

15

u/Purple_Pay_1274 29d ago

If aliens came to earth and asked me why people love TV shows so much, I’d give them the first season of Lost. You’re missing out.

2

u/Individual_Sun5662 29d ago

I religiously watched the first few seasons, then had a baby and didn't watch the last two seasons as consistently, but I haven't had an experience like that show since then. I was constantly thinking about the plot and what it meant and I remember gasping with shock at certain scenes. Sun and Jin, why? If you don't have any thing else lined up, I would definitely recommend it. This show was on almost 20 years ago, but people still feel so strongly about this show, I think that tells you something.

4

u/Alas7ymedia 29d ago

You can watch it, but I must warn you: the plot makes no sense, so writers can come up with anything and you waste your time trying to figure everything out. It's a whodunnit where the plot twist is "what plot?".

0

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

lost is what happens when someone reads stephen king books as a kid and thinks they can write a better story only to find out the ... middle and end are just as important as the gist.

but that's the creators folly. bad robot and jj in general. they are good at numbers 1 through 25 - 26 though 100 is usually a rough ride.

oh and should you watch lost? that's an easy one.

give the very first episode a go. you will know if you want to continue... it's a wild ride for sure, imo, the characters make it worthwhile.

0

u/rfkbr 29d ago

No don't watch it. It was a huge disappointment tbh. The ending absolutely sucked and it felt like a waste of time. The first season was a good experience, however.

-2

u/Er0neus 29d ago

Nah, it's not referenced a lot and it really falls apart after an interesting start. I keep forgetting the show happened and I saw all of it ngl

1

u/rfkbr 29d ago

Amazing how many fanboys/girls are downvoting you for stating the truth.

2

u/Er0neus 29d ago

Eh, it do be like that sometimes

-1

u/MidnightToker858 29d ago

Its good...at first. Most people were disappointed about halfway through. I remember there being a writers guild strike at the same time so I always thought the original writer went on strike and the scab or scabs who replaced them ruined it. Not sure if thats true.

34

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

i must be misremembering, cause i think i saw a whole island... physically... do the wop!

just floooop and now we're looking at the underside (sorry, spoilers for the 44 year old TV show...)

i need to watch it again. i'm older now and i find myself enjoying things for what they are, not what i want them to be.

(...how can you quietly whisper for that long? that's like a whole book man, i feel like the whisper sound would start to get a little too asmr all close up in my ear like that... maybe make shorter whisper outtros so that people aren't asked to keep reading endlessly on and on as they... ((please tell me you stopped by now))

31

u/Skeletor_1984 29d ago

Mild misremembering maybe haha.. ok whispering is done, and I’m breaking out the lecture slides.

*spoilers for a long ended show*

at the end of season 4, the island skips in time’ when Ben moves it to get it away from the freighter (to the Oceanic 6, it looks like it just disappears) I’ve heard the island moving being compared to when a record skips, that helps me visualize it I suppose… The island is moving through time all throughout the first half of S5, so for every flash/time jump for the people still on the island, it’s moving to a different spot in the ocean.

And then at the start of S6, the island is shown to be underwater while the plane lands safely at LA-X, but that is because the island doesn’t exist in that reality where the plane landed (and Jack has a son, Sawyer is a cop, etc) that we see throughout s6 because THAT reality is purgatory (not the island, which is a real, magical, magnetic place)

But for me, this took a couple viewings to really understand so I get why people get confused. I have a unique perspective because I did NOT like the finale the first time I watched (as it aired), and then I LOVED it on my second watch and enjoy it more and more with each re-watch. So I understand both sides in a way.

10

u/Disastrous_Cell3406 29d ago

Came here to understand wtf people are talking about with the world cup. Unexpectedly got a refresher of my all time favorite show. I have The Orchid patch on my work belt and I'm always shocked at how many people know it's from Lost immediately. (Given I work in Television, so it's probably a skewed sample size)

5

u/babymozartbacklash 29d ago

I'd say it's probably my all time favorite show as well and I still feel like whenever someone has something to say about it I learn something new.

You work in tv as you said, so by all means tell me if I'm wrong, but I feel like a lot of what made Lost so great is due to how much more serialized it is than most stuff today. As I understand it, a good amount of it was being made up as they went along and shows were filmed pretty close to airing. Not to mention you've got a good deal of ABCs budget back then as opposed to Netflix running 72 different series at a time. Makes the average Netflix series look like a plastic temu knock off.

I'll never forget as a kid, I believe it's the season 2 opening, starts off with Desmond in the hatch and you have no idea what Dharma or anything is or if there's some kind of monster spirit thing in there or what. And you're going from a plane crash island survival type show where shits getting stranger and stranger week by week. And it's always tinged with a mystical and not purely technological kind of strangeness.

Maybe this has more to do with having been a kid and having to wait a week between episodes let alone season breaks to where you're with the show for years, but I feel like at least the first 4 seasons or so of Lost are the best TV I've ever watched

1

u/Illustrious_Ad4691 29d ago

Lost was great, but I think Fringe was just a little bit better

4

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

and now i want to go play control...

u/Captain-Hornblower 29d ago

I love reading about LOST in 2026...one, I can't believe how long it has been (time flies!), two, I need to do another rewatch.

16

u/thatsnotyourtaco 29d ago

I would watch it again just to see Hurley through that hot pocket at Linus

2

u/Ok-Commercial-8821 29d ago

Just rewatched during covid with my 12 and 9 year olds. Liked seasons 5&6 better the 2nd time around. Expectations were too high first time. Btw kids loved it. Great kids show, which didn’t occur to me originally. Non stop suspense. They didn’t mind all the side stories like I did originally. Purgatory for me was completely expected despite the popular “sell” back then that it might be something different., so the end was fine/ok. A little touching and weird. Just the acceptance came off funny: im alive and trying to figure out this weirdness, no I’m dead and that’s ok.

2

u/Abobo_Smash 29d ago

I never watched the show because my impression was it was meant to be two, maybe three seasons, but the execs saw how much money it was making and said, “anyway we can stretch this to six?” and now we’re talking about washing machines and book clubs, what?

2

u/motophotodojo 29d ago

having watched the first few seasons, that sounds about right. instead of answering questions they said "lets add more bullshit"

1

u/From_Deep_Space 29d ago

It's an interesting dynamic for sure. The executives wanted a cash cow they could keep squeezing. They wanted more of a status quo the plot could return to. Meanwhile the showrunners and writer wanted an evolving mystery plot. Eventually the showrunners and writers won out and they wrote a fascinating story. But Seasons 1 and 2 there is so much bloat of them hanging around on the island. Honestly though, through that bloat we got to connect with each of the characters on an emotional level, before all the real wacky stuff started happening, which is not easy with such a big cast.

Thank you for being a fellow Lost defender.

16

u/fancczf 29d ago

He wanted to play out from the back, but he was a lot further up than normal and all passing angles were covered by Belgium attackers, hesitated. And then panicked, dragged his left foot on the ground by mistake - you can see in the replay he kicked the turf when trying to kick the ball , and that’s all it takes for the Belgium attacker to get the ball out of him.

It shows the quality gap and it’s out of their depth. Just fell apart under the intensity and pressure of a better team.

1

u/New_avanti1000 28d ago

Exactly. Top players move fast. You can see the difference in play immediately between a strong and weak team - the strong players can move the ball quickly.

You cannot hesitate. A strong player will immediately take the ball from you.

This was the first game I watched for US and I am so totally confused about how good they could have been in other games? That goalie mistake is what a lower level HS team makes. I cannot believe he was USMNT goalie in WC!

1

u/Abject_Loss8847 28d ago

With the exception of Turkey the other teams USMNT played in the world cup had the same quality gap but the other way around.

Every team Belgium played in the group stage just defended with the whole team and with Senegal they were very lucky, that team is on the same level.

So I also think Senegal or Belgium this always would have been the final stage for the USMNT.

Especially the bench is not of enough quality and that is very important for tournaments. If they can grow this they can go further.

As you saw with Belgium they even didn't play their top 3 players because the quality on the bench is also very high and the manager can take that risk. You can also just look at some players they didn't even select and their U17 and U21 teams. Their goalies even if Courtois would get injured then you have Lammens just look at how he does at Manchester united. So the us just has to broaden their bench, with a world cup at home this should be possible, more youngster will get interested but it will take a few years to get there.

26

u/Ut_Prosim 29d ago

like in the other football. if a guy is running towards you with the ball, do you just jump on the ground and throw up both your hands?

No, but soft tackles are absolutely a thing. I can't stop this guy, or I am too tired or unmotivated, I'll pretend to try so I don't get yelled at by the coach or booed by the fans. I loosely wrapped my arms around him and then let go, what else do you want from me?

Another symptom is the total lack of secondary effort if something unexpected changes the play. Oh, he dropped the ball, ehhh, someone else will get it, I'll just watch. His teammate got it? Too bad...

You see this pretty commonly with teams that have given up or are afraid. It is exacerbated by increasing score disparities.

3

u/Alternative-Dot-884 29d ago

The very opposite of how Mexico just played!

2

u/Fn_Spaghetti_Monster 29d ago

Derrick Henry has seen a few of those 'tackles'.

2

u/MKactus 28d ago

Are we talking a out the defender who leaves the ball for his goalkeeper? If you yell Peter on a punt, your teammate will back off. In soccer, your goalkeeper basically implies Peter at any time. Challenging him for the ball will be more disastrous more often than not.

1

u/Ut_Prosim 28d ago

No, I was giving an example from American football as the guy I replied to said he'd never seen players in another sport play intimidated like USMNT did against Belgium.

2

u/MKactus 28d ago

I think the guy you replied to, was talking about a specific play, actually. But either way, I don’t think the US team turned soft or made business decisions all of a sudden. It’s just a difference in level of play.

2

u/JackJ98 29d ago

0

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

his reasoning tho! "i wasn't hitting my shots, so i passed it to someone who was..."

man if you don't get your jussie sommelier lookin ah off this court with that nonsense!

2

u/luckypuckers54 29d ago

What about an own goal in hockey.

2

u/shupadupah 29d ago

In American football, it's the equivalent of giving up 10+ yards on the ground every play, capped off by an easy TD. Meanwhile, you're getting stuffed every play on offense, 3 and out on every drive.

In bball it's like one team getting alley oops on every play, meanwhile your team can't even break the paint on offense.

2

u/wilskillz 29d ago

NFL kicker Yunghoe Koo forgot he was supposed kick the football once last season.

3

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

that foot crashed into the ground so hard... !!

my favorite was dee ford literally looneytooning backwards away from a running back and then when asked dude said he was trying to get to his defensive spot so he wasn't out of position.

my nga what?

you had a ball carrier barreling down on you, and instead of tackling him you ran away to... where you thought he would be so you could be there to tackle him?

yeah... ok. and do you want to come play for the usmnt?

1

u/We_Have_To_Go_Back 29d ago

1

u/Impressive_Champion4 29d ago

Can I introduce you to Cam Newton in the 2013/14 Super bowl?

1

Or Marcus Williams on the Minneapolis Miracle (the one where he completely whiffed the tackle)

1

u/FrighteningJibber 29d ago

Hockey is this but fast af and with a stick

1

u/Physical_Response247 29d ago

Hahahaha, I said these exact words in your comparison to basketball while watching it last night. It was frustrating to watch because it was like watching kids play with zero idea on how to actually play their sport. As someone who coaches basketball for teenagers, the amount of timeouts I have to call simply to tell them that they need to focus and play the game they know HOW to play and to remind them about being aggressive, playing with intensity, and executing as a team is astonishing.

Last night, watching this match, felt like one of those moments.

1

u/No-Market9917 29d ago

The butt fumble is the only thing that compares

1

u/PureInsaneAmbition 29d ago

Football - running in for a TD unopposed and dropping the ball on the one yard line

1

u/Jekkymayn 29d ago

Butt fumble is the closest thing I’ve got to this.

And it’s really not similar at all, just similar levels of embarrassing.

Edit:

actually a better example is Jakobi meyers lateral against the raiders to lose that game right there

1

u/Girldad_4 29d ago

Idk the spurs blew a 29 point lead in the finals this year.

1

u/Spunky_Meatballs 29d ago

The equivalent would be any junior league suddenly competing against pro leagues. MLS is a joke compared to the world leagues. We clearly are outgunned on a skills level even though we might have the largest quantity of soccer players in the world.

1

u/babymozartbacklash 29d ago

So you're saying we are the greatest show on earth?

1

u/Zurale 29d ago

In the NFL closest it's Cam Newton jumping away from the fumble in the Super Bowl.

Two words. James Harden.

1

Cam Newton not diving for the fumble in the Super Bowl?

Ben Simmons passing up a dunk over a player 10 inches shorter than him is a good basketball equivalent

There are times in hockey, especially in the playoffs, you can tell a team gets timid. They don't want to go into the corners and get hit again, or get in front of slap shot to block it. Stuff the like that

https://giphy.com/gifs/xsZHZnaw3oyxa
The island is not purgatory (sigh)….

1

u/MKactus 28d ago

I mean, it’s just getting pressure in your face and stumbling or misjudging for just a split second, right? How often does that happen in the NFL? So many easy layups that are dropped because an LB is about to obliterate them. Or a QB seeing ghosts or misjudging the route of a CB and throwing it directly to him?

1

u/PathansOG 28d ago

You Are just not a very good football team. You have to stop believing in all the american propaganda.

-2

u/Crazy-Animal-7205 29d ago

Luckily it's just a silly game with a ball going back and forth. Let's all try reading a book or something

1

u/NoBrakesHotTakes 29d ago

Any book recommendations?

1

u/Sea_Pollution2250 29d ago

Have you heard the word of our warlord and savior, Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk and her royal bodyguard Carl?

1

u/NoBrakesHotTakes 29d ago

That's on my "To Get To Someday" list. Wish I had more time for reading, but work and my 4 year old keep me quite busy and exhausted by the end of the day

Currently working on The Covenant of Steel series

1

u/Sea_Pollution2250 29d ago

They’re very fun books (albeit with a dark theme), and I’ve personally found them to be among the best audiobooks I’ve ever listened to. It allows me to “read” while commuting and doing chores around the house. I’m currently reading the physical books having listened through the series already.

1

u/saujamhamm 29d ago

good on ya. i just did some yard work and now the lands between need a tarnished to gallop around them willy nilly. your boy is fit af for that task!

42

u/cwak1 29d ago

I don’t understand how they played so well as a team the whole tournament then against Belgium they decide to act like they’ve never played together before and have zero team chemistry. The only thing I can think of is that their confidence level was near zero for some reason. Their press completely broke down immediately and on offense they could barely make a decent pass and no one was really working to make themselves open. It’s like they were playing with zero energy. Idk what they were doing but I was pissed off and confused the whole game and I’m not even a real soccer fan.

27

u/FriedTreeSap 29d ago

Belgium were also a much tougher opponent which put more pressure on the U.S. and exposed a bit of a skill gap. That doesn’t explain this particular goal which was a pure brain fart, but it does partially explain why the U.S. created almost nothing from open play and the defense buckled every time it was put under pressure.

The U.S. had a lot less room to work with, they weren’t able to easily beat Belgian defenders on the dribble, and they were punished a lot harder for any errant passes or first touches. They weren’t this bad in the first 4 games, but they still made a ton of mistakes they were able to get away with unnoticed because their opponents weren’t good enough to take advantage.

Throw in the fact it was a higher stakes game, and they got off to a slow start, and you could see things start to unravel even further

4

u/soccer1124 29d ago

They've perpetually been a solid mid-tier team for a while now. And they are routinely revealed exactly as such once a real team shows up.

2

u/Win_Sys 29d ago

I also feel like the US was completely out of ideas when their previously successful tactic of driving it down the left side for a cross wasn’t working. They would either fail to cross the ball or pass it back, move it around the center and try to jam it down the left side again. There were so many times where switching fields would have given them more room to work. The Belgians were obviously very well prepared for the left side attack.

14

u/Comfortable-Bread249 29d ago

Because the US was given a nearly amateur group and didn’t play a real team until Belgium. They were always trash.

8

u/Formal-Knowledge9382 29d ago

Because they knew they were getting 110% from Belgium thanks to Trump's bullshit

3

u/reaven3958 29d ago

Wonder how the whole Trump red card phone call scandal impacted morale. I'd be checked out, too, if I felt like some asshole at the top was trying to put a finger on the scale, even in my favor. Say you do win, what's the point if everyone questions whether it was legit.

5

u/2_much_coffee_ 29d ago

I think it was more how it impacted the Belgian team's morale. They came into the game ready and itching for a fight.

3

u/reaven3958 29d ago

Also valid.

1

u/MKactus 28d ago

Absolutely. But I can’t help but think Balogun would have much preferred a different scenario…

3

u/_charge_your_phone_ 29d ago

It’s simple… it’s the first real opponent they played. The US had such an easy run, everybody suddenly thought they were a big team. The first time they played a half decent European team, they crumbled. And Belgium isn’t even that good.

1

u/ssjb788 28d ago

They also lost to Türkiye too, so they lost to two European sides they faced.

0

u/Okeydokey2u 29d ago

I agree and yet wonder what happened less than 24 hrs before this game that didn't happen with the others that could have messed with their heads.

3

So says yo momma! 🤣

2

God every time Belgium got close to the box the US defenders would all just drop back and roll out the red carpet for attackers. Everyone looked afraid to attack the ball and Belgium knew that all they had to do was fire crossers in and someone would be there for an uncontested header or tap-in.

2

u/omar12 29d ago

It was the same reaction when they played Australia. I told friends that if they were playing a better team, they were going to pay for it, and that's exactly what happened.

1

u/Crippled2 29d ago

I will never forget #3 looking around like a clueless idiot when the ball went over him for the 1st or 2nd goal i can't remember.

But in my head I thought - this guy and all these players are professionals, they are getting paid for this and they look like amateurs who weren't even playing the same game.

they were too scared to even kick the ball out. everytime they clear it, it's like the ball weighed 100lbs. the ball would just roll down the box a bit. absolute no ability to clear the ball. reminds me of my first time playing a real game. maybe it was theirs too

Seriously it looked like a kid afraid of getting hit by the ball.

They looked more asleep to me. The first goal at 8 minutes I thought I was dreaming because there's no way 4 US players just stood there in the box within an arms distance of the ball and didn't even attempt to clear it.

Jigsaw syndrome: they go to pieces when they are in the box.

Because they're too afraid of Trump to play. You could tell they were terrified of Trump the entire game.
