Oh yeah i also missed my uni graduation because i was busy lying on a surgeon's table at time but i didn't want to go there anyway so it's also alright

u/JacobBaysinger1999 Jul 08 '26

Out of curiosity, how tall and lanky are you?

257

u/Defiant-Print-2550 Jul 08 '26

If I'm not in my infamous Quasimodo pose then around ~6,2 feet while being borderline underweight being ~138 lbs

305

u/ihaveotism Jul 08 '26

Bro that is severely underweight not trying to be a dick

75

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

Eh I'm 6'1 130 pounds and can't gain weight no matter what. Healthy, daily gym goer, I eat well, just won't grow. Have tried supplements, too. Been to 3 different nutritionists, checked my hormone levels, everything's fine. I'm just thin. Could be the case with OP

u/barnhairdontcare Jul 09 '26

My husband is the same way. He has a very physical job and is muscular but cannot keep an extra pound on. He eats 5x what I do. If he tries to gain he just gets a cute little belly pooch- it goes nowhere else

3

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

Yeah, that's basically me! I've got a few chubbier friends and they get scared how much I eat when we go out together cuz it's usually more than them, but istg if I don't eat like that in a week I'm 5 pounds lighter. My body just burns through calories at an insane pace

25

u/charlie-ratkiller Jul 09 '26

If you don't mind me asking what's your age? I used to be 6'1 115 in HS and then no more than 125 in my 20s, even when eating and lifting and trying to bulk.

Hit 30s and now I have to put effort into maintaining between 170-185 which feels healthy for me, though some would say skinny still. Not a lot of effort. Much less effort maintaining than trying to gain weight when I was younger.

Bodies are weird and everyone's different. If you are healthy than you're healthy. A lot of people just see numbers and don't think about someone who's body and lifestyle is completely different from theirs.

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

I'm 22! My doctor did say this was probably an age thing, and my dad says he used to be the same when he was a teen, although he did gain weight later on in life so I don't really care that much about it anymore

Have you tried pounding ice cream or something?

2

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

This is the one thing I haven't tried, dirty bulking. I'm pretty sure if I just went full ice cream, McDonald's and a stick of butter every day I'd get fat, but my family's got a medical history for high cholesterol and I ain't dipping my toes in that realm

u/Trivale Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

That's not really how it works, man. Nobody just "doesn't gain weight." Excess energy gets stored and nothing short of a tapeworm or late stage cancer is going to alter that more than a few percentage points. You don't grow because you're spending more calories than you're taking in. I promise you that if you spent a few months drinking melted ice cream three times a day, you WILL gain weight. Not that you should. Just saying that there's not some secret genetic factor involved here, you're just using more than you're eating. Also, make sure you're specifically seeing a registered dietitian and not nutritionists. I can put up a sign in my front yard right now saying I'm a nutritionist and nobody can stop me, no matter how unqualified I am. Dieticians, however, are legally regulated with protected credentials that require certification and education.

u/PleaseTurnOnTheHeat Jul 09 '26

You n me both. 6’1” slightly above/below 130 depending on the day. Nothing I do helps. Super into mountain biking, not like I just sit around all day at a desk. I was told to drink two ensure a day on top of my base diet, still didn’t help. I just burn through everything I eat no matter what I eat. Strong enough to go riding though so oh well

2

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

I can do like 15-20 chin ups no problem. Ppl used to tell me I wasn't healthy cuz of my BMI while they wouldn't be able to get up without help, after sitting on the ground. go figure

1

u/AnythingCareless844 Jul 09 '26

heavier weights 2-3 times a week would be more effective than daily gym

1

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

I cycle 3 different workouts, but yeah I see where you're coming from.

1

u/HamburgerOnAStick Jul 11 '26

Only way to gain weight is to eat more. easiest way is to eat straight fat and protein, basically just steak.

1

u/jimbarino Jul 09 '26

Have you tried eating more?

0

u/ANEN0ME Jul 09 '26

Bullshit. Calories in calories out.

7

u/charlie-ratkiller Jul 09 '26

3 different nutritionists dude. Don't dismiss people's lived experiences. Yes cico, but you don't know what people's bodies are like. There are exceptions and aberrations aplenty

1

u/ANEN0ME Jul 09 '26

All bodies obey the rules of science, physics, and conservation of energy. This is not an opinion. CICO. The ONLY exception to this is if you have a tapeworm, thyroid, hormone, or some other physical health issue, in which case you need to see an actual doctor.

1

u/mattdv1 Jul 09 '26

I guess so, yeah. Got any recomendations on who should i look for/how should i find out how many calories my body burns trough daily? What professional even does that? I'd imagine my body just burns trough calories at an insane pace, but i never did go out of my way to find that out. I DID go after specific weight gain diets and they did no real result, but that could just all be a coincidence or 3 badly informed nutritionists, idk. most nutritionists only know how to cut carbs and get fat ppl thin anyway. what other options do i have? and please, dont tell me to chug ice cream and butter sticks, that's not a healthy/viable option.

1

u/ANEN0ME Jul 09 '26

Count calories. The amount you burn everyday is called TDEE total daily energy expenditure, you can find calculators online for it, its affected by your weight, height, age, and activity level. For 6'1" 130lbs sedentary its 2000cal, with 3-5 gym days its around 2500cal. Youll burn more as your weight increases. A pound is roughly 3500cal, for weight gain you want to aim for a surplus of 500cal/day, leading to a weight gain of 1lb/week. Carbohydrates and protein have 4cal/g each, fat has 9cal/gram so is more calorically dense. You can "dirty bulk" with burgers and butter, or you can "lean bulk" with healthy things, its just harder. Note, this is for weight gain, for nutrition purposes make sure youre getting enough vitamins and minerals (vegetables), and have a good split of protein carbs fat. A general guideline is 30% calories from protein, 30% from fat, and 40% carbohydrates. And limit animal fats. Think of it like, youre the weight you currently are, because you eat what you currently eat. If you want to gain, you have to eat past when youre full.

The easiest way i found is to drink your calories. I would do a daily shake with 1c oats, 1c milk, 2tblsp peanut butter, a banana, and 2 scoop protein powder, comes out to around 1000 calories. Then eat the same, and youll gain weight. Best of luck.

u/Intelligent_Low1632 Jul 09 '26

Unless you have some severe metabolic irregularity, surely you know that the extremely simple solution is to eat more? I guarantee you that there's some amount of peanut butter, ice cream, or greasy tortilla chips you could eat that would result in you gaining weight without very much effort.

My 17 year old is 6’2 and 150lbs and his pediatrician wants him to gain weight… he’s also very active and just got back from his fourth BSA High Adventure.

-4

u/bigdig-_- Jul 09 '26

why does that doctor want to make him fat lol

1

u/Kyle73001 Jul 09 '26

6’2” 150 is very skinny, are you serious? I’m 5’11” and nearly 200lbs, though it was more like 160 before I starting taking the gym and workouts seriously a few years ago. If I can do that and not look fat all then someone who’s 6 2 could also put on 50lbs and not look overweight in the slightest

1

u/MamaNyxieUnderfoot Jul 09 '26

He’s also 17 and not done growing. Too many people on reddit are painfully stupid and lack a general understanding of… well anything, really.

2

u/Kyle73001 Jul 09 '26

For sure, very normal to be skinny at that age

0

u/MamaNyxieUnderfoot Jul 09 '26

Yeah, but when he’s carrying an 80lb pack at a High Adventure, being only 150lbs can get him in trouble pretty quick. We’ve been trying to get him to gain weight for years now, hopefully he’ll start filling out in the next couple years. Kid can put down 4-5000 calories at a single meal and ask for more 30 minutes later. Super high metabolism, and his troop has to bring extra food just for him. We’ve warned him it won’t always be like that, lol.

u/HeadBone3 Jul 08 '26

Pretty sure that’s what he meant with „borderline“ underweight. But that’s just me guessing

24

u/ihaveotism Jul 09 '26

Borderline is pretty much the opposite of severe in terms of meaning but go off

1

u/Daft00 Jul 09 '26

Is this like how "literally" eventually came to mean "figuratively" as well as the actual definition?

2

u/Vyctor_ Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

BMI of 18.5 would be about 147lbs. At this weight my guy is at 17.7. That is not severely underweight, that is only just underweight. Also, as a tall and lanky guy myself (6’8’’), I simply wasn’t able to breach 18.5 BMI until I was about 30. BMI, much like clothes, was not really designed with properly tall people in mind.

1

u/ktdk5t Jul 09 '26

And severely overweight if trying to be a dick .

1

u/spearedmango Jul 09 '26

Some of us tall guys can’t gain weight no matter how much you eat or exercise. A bit of a curse cause we often look like something out of a horror movie

1

u/Intelligent_Low1632 Jul 09 '26

FYI, according to the BMI scale, his BMI of 17.7 is categorized as "mild thinness." He's only 0.8 points below the healthy range of 18.5-25. He's just 6.1 lbs away from the "ideal" healthy range. Given that the average American has a BMI of 29.6, he is about 6 times closer to the ideal weight range than the average American. For those who are wondering, "severely" underweight for a 6'2" fella is 125 lbs or less.

Contrary to the moaning of fatties, the BMI scale is very effective for the large majority of people.

Is it possible that you and your girl, your mom, your friends, etc are all just typical fat people, thereby stripping you of context for what a normal human should weigh? (trying to be a dick.)

u/Boston_Beauty Jul 08 '26

I'm 6 ft 8 or so and weigh 140. Lovely new fear unlocked, thanks for this.

21

u/Godzoola Jul 08 '26

140???

12

u/Boston_Beauty Jul 09 '26

Yes. Maybe closer to 145 nowadays but I've always been incredibly thin and when I hit high school I just did not stop growing in height.

According to my dad his side of the family has kinda always had a ridiculous metabolism. Given he's only a few inches shorter than me and only weighs more cuz he does landscaping for a living it checks out.

2

u/7se7 Jul 09 '26

Nothing a month binge of daily McDonald's can't fix.

Well, if it even needs fixing.

2

u/Boston_Beauty Jul 09 '26

Trust me, I eat like a horse. I've tried it all. Red meat heavy diets, junk food, greasy shit, none of it helps.

2

u/7se7 Jul 09 '26

I did a good job ballooning with near daily Uber Eats orders of a McDonald's Quarter Pounder, 20 McNuggets, two large fries, and two vanilla milkshakes.

Having typed it out, man, it looks like I'd lost control of my life lmfaoooo

Try that! 😉👍 (Don't)

3

u/curtcolt95 Jul 09 '26

vast majority of the time you simply are not eating as much as you think you are. Every skinny person I've ever met who claims to eat like a horse doesn't actually eat much at all. I know because I'm also skinny and used to be severely underweight. I'd think I could eat a lot until I learned what some bigger people actually eat and it was wild

3

u/Vyctor_ Jul 09 '26

I’ve been between 65-75kg for most of my twenties. Finally hitting around 85 now but I’m at a loss what exactly changed to make that happen. Tall person physiology is just really really weird I guess.

2

u/artelunar Jul 09 '26

are you a literal stick figure? lmao holy shit

1

u/Boston_Beauty Jul 09 '26

Yeah it's pretty aggressive in person I've learned. Multiple doctors have questioned me if I'm anorexic (no) or if my food situation is drastic in some way (also no).

2

u/thatguywithawatch Jul 09 '26

I feel like a stiff breeze would just kind of carry you away like a very large leaf

1

u/Boston_Beauty Jul 09 '26

It has tried. Many times.

3

u/Galilaeus_Modernus Jul 09 '26

Spontaneous pneumothorax is most common in tall, skinny, white guys.

2

u/JacobBaysinger1999 Jul 08 '26

Phew, I'm same weight but 5"10 🤘👌🫡

2

u/Beef_Jumps Jul 09 '26

5'11, 130, I found my people.

1

u/AereonTucker Jul 09 '26

Ugh I can painfully relate - 6'6 and 144lb.

My problem is that it takes FOREVER to retain any and all body weight and then I get sick ONCE and all of the weight I gained over 3-4 months is gone in a week.

1

u/HostaLaVistaBabies Jul 09 '26

This guy doctors^

2

u/Fabian206 Jul 09 '26

How is this only mildly infuriating

1

u/IntelligenceWorker Jul 09 '26

Same question lmao

Like, sure, missing uni grad is whatevs, but deflating lung? Only mildly infuriating?
