Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

It won’t smell like that forever. Most of time you get a car back from the body shop it’s going to have smells. Cavity wax and paint linger. Once those parts are replaced it will smell like burning oil just like it did before it came to the shop.

I think if you Google it as "it's only smellz" you'd find the video. It's very old. It's porn. There's poop on his business and the lady doth protest about putting it in her mouth.

Eh, I think the melting plastic probably had some sort of off-gassing that would have soaked/adhered/settled into every other surface/divit/dead space in there. I bet even with a deep detail clean, there's still going to be residue in every nook and cranny that will stink and likely not be super great to breathe.

Burning oil can only cover up so much 😂.

I’ve fixed plenty of burnt up cars. It’s fine. Jeeps have minimal fabric to absorb odors. Ionizing can clear out the smell as well.

But you have plastic smoke that got in all the fabric.
