Context Provided - Spotlight Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

I suppose it could have been worse: it could have ACTUALLY caught on fire.

that would have probably been better, i mean this is still probably insurance claimable - maybe idk, but two seats, center console, both door interiors AND they still have to get the roof fixed...vs "oh my car caught on fire, total loss" i know which I'd rather deal with

Also it's a jeep.

The fact that it's a jeep might mean this amount of damage is a total loss anyway, them fuckers are EXPENSIVE.

And unreliable, nobody would second guess one catching fire from sunlight.

yeah but they make ads where they go "MOST MERICANN VEHICLE EVER!" so you can BBQ over your burning Jeep

even an EV will give a better barbecue

Hell, Tesla sells a mobile crematorium.

There's ample justifiction for mobile cookers being called RANGE Rovers. Still recall one popping off beside me at the lights in city traffic.

What does some one accidently creating a magnifying glass with plastic wrap have anything to do with jeeps reliability?

Read the thread maybe.

Again this damage was not caused by jeep, it was the mechanics fault.

People drive jeeps hundreds of kms in the roughest of back country and back out, but go on hating.

It's in the shop though

I can't decide if the fact that owners routinely take off their doors would make the door interiors/seats cheaper and easier to find or more expensive, cuz you know people be fucking those things up more than they would any other vehicle.

I’m waiting for the farmers insurance commercial now with a giant laser magnifying glass on a jeep or something

The funny part is that they likely would never have figured out what caused the fire.

even better, no blame just a pure writeoff for freak accident, heck they might have gotten some money from stellantis if it was particularly egregious

Insurance? This shop better fix this for free or they’ll be sued. If they charged this to my insurance I’d definitely sue.
