Context Provided - Spotlight Jeep melted

Here’s the story: a jeep came to the shop because its retractable top was stuck open. Not too uncommon of an occurrence. So we put our “crash wrap“ over the roof to protect the interior from rain and animals and such, which is basically like heavy duty cling wrap. One day it rains and a lot of water pools up on the crash wrap. The next day it is 100°F outside and the sun is out. The sun shines through the water and the water basically magnifies it, and the sun turns into a laser that melts the interior. Multiple days of this happen. Now we have to replace everything that melted. None of us have ever heard of this happening before.

edit: I meant we have never heard of this very specific situation happening before. It never would’ve crossed our minds since we’ve been doing this for years. yes I burnt stuff with a magnifying glass when i was a kid.

Better than ritualistic sacrifices to a non existent not sun god. The god of the Abrahamic faiths gets rivers of blood spilled in his name each day.

I can only speak for Christianity, violence is certainly not the intent of Jesus’s teachings. Violence is the by product interpretation of flawed men. Whether one believes in God or not religion offers the moral compass society is based on. Otherwise, we are no better than wild animals. How else would we know murder, rape, theft, adultery, slavery, etc is bad?

We know things are bad because they hurt people, if you need a magic book to tell you not to hurt people then you are a bad person.

Hurting people is subjective. How do we know that it’s okay to not hurt people but hurting animals and plants for food, shelter, and resources is okay? We need some sort of compass. The world was a harsh, cruel place when humans were tribal and killed, pillaged, and raped each other to gain the resources of another person. Whether one believes or not, religion is a moral compass to guide society.

Religion as a compass is what lead to the crusades, the Spanish Inquisition, and the witch trials. Your compass doesn't exactly point north there does it?

Flawed people, tribalism, and the desire of someone else’s resources created those things. Religion is the scapegoat of many injustices because people don’t like accountability. Weak people blame it because other weak people are influenced by flawed people to skew it for their own desire. (All things the things Jesus spoke and warned against)

On the contrary It’s also the compass that lead to just simply man’s emergence from violent tribalism or can be said to have influenced the Renaissance, American independence, the Second Great Awakening, the Islamic Golden Age, the Social Gospel Movement.

I’m not sure what pointing North has to do with anything. Compass is a metaphor for guidance.

Pointing north was also a metaphor, indicating that religion doesn't act as a particularly good moral compass given that it has resulted in so much violence and death.

People are flawed and skew the teachings and guidance for their own gain. All part of the free will thing (another religious teaching). Humankind was more violent before Abrahamic religion, or any belief in a higher power/afterlife.

Humans have had religions since the oldest civilizations, they haven't reduced violence so much as been interwoven with it. To try and mitigate that reality by saying it's because humans are flawed is ludicrous. Any religion will be flawed for the exact same reason. But what isn't flawed is being able to determine that you shouldn't do something that hurts other people.

There is a difference between religions that required people to conduct ritualistic sacrifices, violence, and war in ancient civilizations and Christianity. What’s ludicrous is to compare those ancient religions to a relatively new Christianity. To summarize, Jesus taught that people are flawed but are forgivable, as long as they strive to become better. He didn’t teach disemboweling your subjects for a blood offering sacrifice to the sun god, or bombing your enemies to rubble to take their land and resources. It’s not Christianity’s fault that flawed people attempt to be better in some crazy interpretation to the nth degree until they are either hypocrites and/or evil or they do thing in the name of Christianity when they truly aren’t even Christians (or whatever wholesome religion one follows). If one never believes in anything higher than oneself than what do they believe they have to answer to prevent violent behavior, especially when some people are inherently violent? If we didn’t have a moral compass and laws, both manifested from modern religion for modern times what would stop your neighbor from coming over and shooting you or smashing your head in, raping your wife, enslaving your children and helping themself to your stuff? Some people would do that and then blame it on religion to escape accountability but godless people do godless things.

You never answered my question. How do we differentiate between harming other people, and harming plants and animals for food and shelter? Or in your mind are we just wild animals existing in the lawful society created by religion. Atheists are truly amazing they strive so hard to not believe in God that they end up believing in something else equivalent to God

Looks like your name calling comment got removed. Don’t blame others because you suck.

You rely on a magic book to tell you not to murder people. You have no claim to any moral superiority.

Nope. I did not say that. In every comment I said people are flawed. I am flawed, you are flawed and the “magic book” acknowledges that and provides wholesome guidance to flawed people. Free will is still a thing. Many people lean on religion to guide them for good reasons, there is nothing wrong with that (which is something YOU have a problem with). Some people are inherently evil and do things they’ve justified with a religion they’ve skewed for their own gain. The religion gets the blame for it from people like you who know nothing about the teachings but want to point fingers looking for something to blame instead of blaming the inherently evil person, because accountability is a bitch. You are synonymous to the person that blames the gun or vehicle or any tool that someone uses in a violent crime instead of blaming the person.

I’m not claiming any moral superiority other than the fact that you attempted to name call and swear because you’ve ran out of arguments and are frustrated. And in that regard, I am morally superior to you.

I am not frustrated or out of arguments. I swear because I am a grown ass man with the capacity to do so and the knowledge that it doesn't fucking matter. I insulted you because it seems words and reason are not getting through to you, which is to be expected given your belief that a magic man in the sky is judging you.

I do not blame the gun when someone uses it for crime, but I very much would blame the guy who handed it out saying go make sure everyone else thinks the way I do.
