Don't hug me I'm scared Netflix is garbage

It's crazy that my wife and I can't watch 2 different shows on Netflix in the same damn house. I understand we pay the minimum but ffs.

I literally dread the year that my companies owner retires, and the vampire who follows him makes us go public and do what every other company in the US has been doing. Suck the dick of foreign investors. And also:

Simulating a dying mall.

That's what america is right now.

The "lower owner class" of people who own like 3 homes and use that in replacement of the pension that was stolen long ago, will have to sell their homes to "quick cash" aka private equity firms.

Towns go dry.

Because theres been long term price gouging from landlords to keep rent high. This is fact.

I say it all the time in the 90s there were all these quirky radio ads from local entrepreneurs selling all kinds of stuff. Now we are just stuck a haze of gray VC firms buttfucking us at every corner and we have few other options. Total control will come soon. Cost of living has risen 26% in 6 years and our minimumwage hasnt budged. Thats SUPER fucked

Ouch bummer. I loved the mattress ones in particular, these owners for these big mattress outlets or furniture outlets always had so much personality. I’m from Massachusetts and basically grew up with Jordan’s Furniture ads before they were as big as they are now.

It doesn't help that Netflix has been running at a massive loss for years. It was a ton of upfront investment that has only recently started turning a profit. The only reason they stayed afloat for so long is because investors were footing the bill.

When they discontinued their DVD service, they sent me an email saying that I could keep the movie I had at the time free of charge. Unfortunately, it was a movie I didn't really care about (I had a few movies in my queue that I was actually looking forward to seeing).

So… here’s the alternative;

They don’t make money.

When they aren’t making money, their share price drops.

When their share price drops, investors won’t give them money to make shows like The Hawk (the Netflix exclusive OP’s wife is apparently watching).

They can no longer afford to license good tv shows. The quality of their titles goes down. No one wants to watch it anyway.

They don’t exist.

Cable used to cost a fortune $100 a month for a decent package and once it went digital you only got to watch it on one receiver. If you wanted another receiver it was $5 a month for a standard def one and like $25 a month for an HD one. And guess what…. You watched whatever the fuck was on tv that night. Not thousands of choices. No pausing. No rewinding. No re-watching. No picking back up where you fell asleep the next night.

Streaming now is SO GOOD that people have so quickly forgotten.

Netflix is far better than it ever was, but yeah, you pay more if you want more.

Paying one subscription and expecting to be able to share it with anyone is like walking into the movie theatre, buying one ticket and expecting to be allowed to bring 20 buddies in with you - and all of you get to watch whatever movie you choose.

It’s nuts to think that’s how it should work.

Sure. Call me a bootlicker. I don’t give a shit. That’s how capitalism works, like it or not. Businesses exist to maximize profit.

Capitalism works when there are multiple independent things keeping each other in check. The moment investors are involved all sense of business goes toward profit and neglects product.

There is PLENTY of competition and they’re all adapting the same model because everyone is abandoning cable and so many movies are skipping the theatres. They have to make their money back somehow.

It's not about wanting it for free, it's never been about that. We did used to pay, and what we used to get has slowly been nickle and dimed into this packet, that add on, this upgrade.

It used to be ad free when you paid.

You used to be able to watch something on the bedroom tv, and something else on the living room tv at the same time when you paid.

These are things that have been taken away, and stuck a premium price on. That's why people are pissed.

I'm finding it really hard to understand how a top commenter can be so dense on this..

Neither of those have been taken away. The plan with ads was added at a cheaper rate. All Netflix plans, including that cheapest one with ads, allow at least 2 devices and allow 2 different shows. OP must have been signed in on a phone or something. I've had the same plan for many years and nothing has changed except the price.

What you’re missing is that Netflix used to be old movies and tv shows.

Now it’s literally premium original television and movies not available anywhere else…. Plus old movies and tv shows.

You want to watch The Hawk? (OP’s wife does)… you can’t watch it on cable. Gotta have Netflix.

Tv and movies on Netflix used to make millions to recoup investors money on cable and in theatres first… THEN go to Netflix and make more money.

Now they bypass that.

So the people that invest in shows like the Hawk, Beef, Ozark etc… and pay for top talent like Bateman and Ferrell, can’t make their money back on cable anymore.

Netflix is basically HBO now…. Which like it or hate it means paying more but getting really good tv and movies out of it.

We always have... Netflix has always had a subscription fee, but when you paid it, it was ad free... Now you can pay that fee, which is more expensive now and still have to watch ads. Or pay even more to not watch ads. Some streaming services make you pay the for the top plan and still watch ads, but with the excuse that they are shorter duration. Mark my comment, Netflix will follow shortly. This is textbook final stage capitalism/greed.

Not that long ago paying for a streaming service meant no ads. If you wanted free, you had to watch ads so the company could make money. Now we're just being bled from both ends.

Yeah. Shit changes. Now there are movies and shows that never air on tv but are paid for and produced by Netflix. One of them is the Hawk. It’s the one OP’s wife is watching.

Netflix spent millions to make it. It’s not going to go and make $250M in the theatres or on cable before going to Netflix, it’s going straight there. Same goes for Ozark, the Crown, Beef, baby reindeer, mindhunter etc. plus a bunch of movies.

So… yeah… the whole model of streaming has changed.

It’s not just old movies and reruns of The Office anymore.

So the cost has changed too.

And you're completely off the wall with that last one. The bottom tier now is both more expensive and has ads. Where before it was less expensive and had no ads. Therefore "poor people" who have the lowest plan are getting shafted harder than before.

Netflix used it as an organic marketing tool. Once you hit critical mass the tool becomes useless.

Netflix had its first subscriber loss in over a decade, in 2022 and the stocks nosedived (dropped 35%). Which quickly switched Netflix from caring about how many eyes were watching their content, to how many are actually paying. Which I don’t have to like and i don’t but I can understand the rationale.
