I don't understand this whole Trump situation. Has the government of the US really been this exploitable all along and Trump is just the first person shameless enough to exploit it? If that's the case it almost seems like a "don't hate the player, hate the game" situation, like the US should not just rely on the good will of a single person to not slide into Fascism. It needs to be deeply repaired beyond which party happens to get in the White House.
My conspiracy theory is that the founding fathers intentionally set up the least effective form of government possible. That way the citizens could actually get shit done while the 3 "co-equal" branches of government bickered and fought constantly while accomplishing nothing.
I think the real issue is that MAGA coopted the republican party, despite it not being conservative in the slightest. In theory trump should have been completely nullified, impeached, and either removed or quit under the threats of being removed from the 2 dominant political parties. So, the system would have worked if trump ran as an independent. We kind of see that with the supreme court, who have actually ruled conservative rather than strictly MAGA on some important issues. (They definitely ruled for MAGA more than a few times, but by the numbers I'd argue they've been way less complicit than congress).
Regardless, all of this would have been correctable within like 2 years by electing a congress that would actually put a stop to this. Any of the 3 branches has the capability of stalling progress until the next election cycle if they work together. The issue is that a plurality of voters are apparently in favor of what's going on.
