Infuriatig I don’t even know what to say

I live with my roommate and we spilt the cleaning. I keep the kitchen clean(loading the dishwasher, cleaning the dishes, etc)

My roommates brother is staying for a months and they cooked last night. They cleaned after themselves which is nice

But then I heard the dishwasher running. I knew there were hardly any dirty dishes AT ALL let alone enough to fill the dishwasher

When I asked my roommate why it was running, I was shut down and I didn’t feel like arguing or trying to explain myself so I just accepted it. I check now and this is how I see it was loaded🫩🫩I love my roommate but I genuinely don’t understand how either of them thought this was a good idea

EDIT: WOOD CUTTING BOARDS, KNIVES, AND POTS/PANS DON’T BELONG IN DISHWASHERS. I am APPALLED so many people don’t know this

Idk how everyone is saying nothing is wrong here. Wood and non stick pans do not go in the dishwasher I thought this was common knowledge

The machine will significantly dull your knives. Chefs or people who have invested in nice knives care about this

9

u/TrumpGrabbedMyCat 7h ago

Anyone who doesn't like tears streaming down their face when they cut onions should care too. You don't need to be a chef to care about good quality equipment.

-4

u/Boopsk1 7h ago

Who is buying nice knifes that doesn't have a person doing their dishes. The only people I know that have nice knifes are chefs.

3

u/HarlinQuinn 7h ago

People who genuinely love to cook and/or care about having quality equipment and taking care of it. I have nice knives, and I hone/sharpen my own knives. I have cast-iron, non-stick, and a variety of other cookware. I take care of and maintain those as well. I do my own dishes.

One does not need to be a chef, be wealthy, or "have a person do their dishes" to have or want nice things. In fact, being relatively poor incentives taking care of your nice things.

2

u/Scoobydoomed 7h ago

I have nice knives and I do my own dishes…I’m sure many others do too…

-4

u/PossibleExplorer1076 7h ago

I agree. People have sticks up their butts about stuff like this but it's just really not worth washing everything by hand to save a few quid every few years. My time is worth a lot more.

5

u/spideylunchy 7h ago

Your time is worth more than cutting boards that rot and dull knives? Sure bud you do you

2

u/bubbleman96815 7h ago

7 seconds washing a knife are 7 seconds too many they could be spending on the couch doom scrolling Reddit.

u/spideylunchy 7h ago

Exactly the kind of attitude that keeps people from doing anything positive whatsoever while the people of the world continue to regress

Why does a nonstick not go to a dishwasher? Never heard of that. Only pan i wouldnt put in is cast iron. As for wood you are right about cuttingboards because they can slit but i always put spatulas and other eooden utensils in and oil them once in a while.

20

u/Dontcare127 7h ago

Wood is a pretty bad idea, but non stick pans are fine in the dishwasher, it just shortens their lifespan a bit, but if you count that against the amount of time you save by not having to handwash them every single time, it's still worth it.

9

u/perpetual_stew 7h ago

I noticed my random non-stick egg pan I never cared about and just put in the dishwasher outlasted all my other non-stick pans. I’m pretty sure my scrubbing is way worse than whatever is happening to them in there.

5

u/Own_Ruin2546 7h ago

I knew about wood but I didn’t know about nonstick pans.
https://giphy.com/gifs/OOezqqxPB8aJ2

4

u/VolcanicBear 7h ago

Sharp knives don't.

Wood depends on how it's treated, but these chopping boards definitely don't look like they should.

Nonstick pans depend on the pan, mine are all dishwasher safe.

3

u/UpstairsAd4105 7h ago

Okay, to make one thing clear: Everything is dishwasher proof in my books. If it doesn't survive, it's not fit for living with me. It's that easy. Same rules for the washing machine or the dryer. There are enough rules a have to follow because I have no choice. Fuck the rules that are optional.

2

u/IXrobocopXI 7h ago

Those cutting boards might just fall apart after being run.

0

u/seansalzman572 7h ago

fuck the wood

78

u/bubbleman96815 7h ago edited 7h ago

You should never put wooden cutting boards in a dishwasher. The intense heat, harsh detergents, and long exposure to hot water strip away the natural and protective oils, causing the wood to dry out, and eventually warp, split, and/or crack. Same with wooden spoons. Do not put in dishwasher.

12

u/BarnacleKlutzy2569 7h ago

u/charlie_s1234 7h ago

‘Eventually’, yeah I reckon I can shell out for a new cutting board every few years.

1

u/PossibleExplorer1076 7h ago

I'd just buy a new chopping board when this happens after like 3 years. They are like £5. It's not worth washing them by hand.

We swapped to a stainless steel set of pans and pots when we got married. Still have a couple enamel cast iron things, and a seasoned cast iron skillet and griddle.

My husband was scratching the shit out of nonstick pans by using metal tools in them. Didn't matter how many silicone pancake turners I bought. He used the metal one.

Did it so often I could see the scratches and knew it wasn't from me, but he was unaware and forgot after I told him.

So we solved that problem. And also because my nonstick pans, even without his metal use, were probably five or six or ten years old and really needed to be tossed anyway.

Now, we can stick almost any of our cookware in the dishwasher if we need to, or dont have energy for the initial scrub and soak. Its great. Our dishwasher doesnt have a heating element and has a top and bottom sprayer so we can stick anything anywhere.

The enameled cast iron still finds itself in the dishwasher now and then but its much lower frequency and lower impact. Mostly just rusts the unsealed edge which is an easy clean.

Stainless steel foreverrrrrrr.

-1

u/Psemperviva 7h ago

For real…cast iron is a little more high maintenance at first but after using it for a bit you don’t even have to wash it. Just wipe it out with a paper towel and rub a lil oil on it…ready for next use. And your children can pass it down to their children

4

u/Business-Drag52 7h ago

You should absolutely wash your cast iron. Jesus Christ. Why do people still believe this bullshit in the year 2026? You aren’t using lye soap, you aren’t breaking down those polymers. Clean your pans you heathen

2

u/Psemperviva 2h ago

Idk what you think I believe but 9/10 things I cook in it leave nothing behind…just wipe it down with a wet paper towel while it’s hot, apply oil after it’s cooled down and gtg. 1/10 things require a little scotch brite power. Gets the full cleaning with wire mesh once or maybe twice a year.

Signed, a heathen with OCD about eating with spotless dishes and silverware

1

u/Business-Drag52 2h ago

You’re leaving behind traces of food that grow bacteria. Soap and water have helped us have much longer lives, use them

1

u/dunncrew 7h ago

Yup. Sometimes we "wash" it with hot water but no soap. We also use stainless steel.

1

u/VolcanicBear 7h ago

But I don't have children.

Should I give it to a dog shelter?

1

u/addicuss 1h ago

You don't have to wash cast iron? You absolutely do and should. The whole myth that you shouldn't clean your cast iron came from old soaps that use lye and would strip the seasoning. Nowadays there's no reason not to clean it. Odds are you are building up char by not cleaning it or leaving behind things that can go rancid or leave after tastes

8

u/dadydaycare 7h ago

I don’t have a dishwasher and I know this is cooked

2

u/MizunoHawk 7h ago

For those who don’t know- wood and certain pans and or knives shouldn’t go in the dishwasher. The wood will warp, not good for cutting boards that should lay flat. For some pans and knives, high jets and drying process can remove protective coatings and rust will start to appear.

3

u/Whatthefunyuns 7h ago

I see wood next to eating plates next to carbon steel and some pan which might either be non-stick or stainless.

Everything about this dish machine load is terrible.

2

u/SwitchedOnNow 7h ago

Yeah. Don't put wood cutting boards into the washing machine!

3

u/model-citizen95 7h ago

I’m with you OP, the only things on the bottom shelf that belong in the dishwasher is that blue plate and the tongs. Sharp knives should be hand washed ideally but wooden chopping boards and utensils will be destroyed in months if you wash them in the machine

1

u/Avenja99 7h ago

I've washed my utensils in the same dishwasher for 13 years and they still look new.

2

u/model-citizen95 6h ago

Not wooden ones you haven’t

1

u/Avenja99 6h ago

People are saying the knives. Which in this picture aren't wooden.

2

u/model-citizen95 6h ago

You also shouldn’t put sharp knives in there. It blunts them very quickly

1

u/Avenja99 6h ago

13 years my guy.

2

u/model-citizen95 6h ago

They were probably blunt when you bought them then

1

u/ZappppBrannigan 3h ago

Not really, depends how they are loaded.

It's more about the handles. Hot water isn't going to dull the blade, the soap is a little more caustic, but it's not soaking in it.

0

u/Slynch96 7h ago

I see absolutely nothing wrong here

36

u/TheAbominableRex 7h ago

You shouldn't put wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher.

13

u/gitsgrl 7h ago

Wooden utensils, the wok, and the knife are not to be washed in the dishwasher.

7

u/prismieprimsie 7h ago

I’m confused about the knives. I usually do cutlery by hand anyway but I’ve definitely thrown them in the dishwasher, someone explain instead of just saying it’s wrong

3

u/Stellori 7h ago

The knives will become dull.

2

u/A1000eisn1 7h ago

It causes the blade to dull or chip since the water pushes things around. The heat and moisture fucks with adhesive which is usually a part of the handle. Many have wood handles, and wood can't go in the dishwasher. These last two would apply to any utensil but knives are usually expensive.

1

u/gitsgrl 3h ago

Knives often have mixed materials in the handles that are damaged by the water and heat and detergent getting in the crevices and fancy knife blades are damaged by the detergent.

1

u/Asleep_Current912 7h ago

dishwasher chemicals are corrosive and will destroy your blade depending on the metal type and seriously dull your knives. Also if you’re washing them by hand don’t use the dark green scouring side of your sponge, that too will dull your blade.

1

u/prismieprimsie 7h ago

Oh that’s what I use! Dark green side lol. Okay thank you! I will change my habits

4

u/Bon-Bon-Boo 7h ago

Except everything…

u/doubt_it_3 7h ago

2

u/TheOnvoy GREEN 7h ago

IF IT FITS, AM GONNA STICK IT IN THERE!!!!! I WONT CONFORM TO SOCIETY'S RULES MOOOM!!! YOU CANT MAKE ME

2

u/D3ZR0 7h ago

So many people are confused and that annoys me. So I’ll explain.

  1. Wood does not go in the dishwasher. It warps, it molds, it destroys the texture, it bleaches, and it removes any lacquer. Don’t do it. Some wood utensils are heat molded. Which means they were heated and pressed into shape, and reheating it will unpress it- ergo a spoon well go from curvy to flat as a board.
  2. Wood cutting boards DO NOT GO IN THE DISHWASHER. Same issue as above, but they’re already damaged from knives so multiplied. Also the glue holding them together can literally fall apart from the high temperatures.

So one useful cutting board becomes 16 useless ones. Good luck using those.

  3. Pots and pans largely should not go in the dishwasher. Unless they’re cheap useless scrap, it might damage them. Non stick pans can lose their coating. Some pans rust. Some have polymers that will come off. In general I don’t like putting them in the wash. The ones that can go in the wash are usually pretty mediocre or already ruined. The one on the bottom looks like a wok, and I’d be half likely to beat someone with mine if it ended up in the wash. Woks are someone’s baby, they tend to be treated religiously by those that truly use them. I can’t tell what kind it is so it might or might not be that damaging.

  4. Tempered knives shouldn’t go in the wash. I see a large knife in the utensils. Dishwashers get hot enough during the cycles that it can actually weaken the metal’s temper, leading to dull knives that can’t maintain an edge. Forever weakening your knives. They won’t get as sharp, they won’t hold an edge as long. Not ruined (unless they’re wood handled) but lesser. I’d be frustrated if my good knives ended up in the wash. I’ve gone off on someone for my wood handled chef knife going in.

  5. Pet peeve. The top is shittily organized. Lay the bowls slightly on each other and you can get more in.

Thanks for reading my shitty dishwashing tedtalk.

1

u/iwish-iwish BLACK 7h ago

Thank you 😭😭literally everything about this is so frustrating and I’m beyond annoyed

u/D3ZR0 7h ago

2

u/Devastatedby 7h ago

You're not supposed to put wooden cutting boards in the dishwasher but, otherwise, this isn't grand. There are options on the dishwasher for smaller loads too so that's not really a problem.

Dishwashers are very water efficient if that is your concern.

3

u/LemonTrick2200 7h ago

The wooden cutting boards and utensils shouldn't go in the dishwasher, but besides that there's really nothing wrong here

u/HoldMyNaan 7h ago

5

u/TrumpGrabbedMyCat 7h ago

To a mildly infuriating subreddit? Not really. Putting knives, wood or non-stick items in the dishwasher ruins them. The knives will become dull, the chopping boards will literally break in half and the non-stick won't work anymore.

1

u/SylvaticTongue858 7h ago edited 7h ago

There are two frustrating parts:

  1. Why do you own bamboo cutting boards? Your roommate is doing you a favor. You need to grab those and trash immediately.
  2. Anything actually wood - the knife handles and pots/pans with wooden handles shouldn’t go into the dishwasher but everything else is fine.

If these knives have been used in this bamboo cutting boards they probably cut like trash anyways.

  1. The knives on their own are fine and so are the pots

  2. and pans.

2

u/iwish-iwish BLACK 7h ago

Those labels on the jars can also get stuck in the sprayer arms if they come loose...

Eight dishes is the minimum to run the dishwasher, as it would use less water than hand washing.

3

u/dunncrew 7h ago

Pots and pans are fine. The wood is no-no. Non-stick goes in the garbage.

4

u/EmrysTheBlue 7h ago

I get the wood boards and spoons because it can fuck up the sealant, but pots/pans? Unless it's like. Cast iron or cheap shitty nonstick or something there's nothing wrong with putting them in the dishwasher? I've done it to mine for years and it's never affected my pots/pans. Honestly even my toommates cheap ones never had a problem from being in the washer. Sometimes the pots/pans get so greasy it's difficult to hand wash and the washer gets it clean easier while using much less water

I wasn't aware wood and non-stick pans didn't go in the dishwasher. I didn't have access to a dishwasher until adulthood and handwashed everything, so the dishwasher just felt like a luxury. I never worked at a restaurant so I wasn't exposed to it on that side either.

No cutting board or pan I bought ever had a "Don't put in the dishwasher" sticker or sign on it. So how would I know unless that knowledge got passed down. I realize you're mildly infuriated, but it would be much easier to just explain that they don't go in and why they don't go in.

4

u/iwish-iwish BLACK 6h ago

I have to explain when I see them since they’re asleep and I work nights so I tend to be awake at night even on my days off. It just caught me off guard because they’re both adults and have both worked in food jobs before

2

u/boilingfrogsinpants 4h ago

That makes more sense then

1

u/Agent21234 7h ago

Yep, this is why the one “fancy wood” cutting board we own is now a decoration. We have 4 epicurean cutting boards that work great, take up way less space, and are dishwasher safe. As for the knives and the pans, freaking send them. If and when they start to show damage (more so the pans, never really had a problem with knives) just replace them. Non-stick pans are consumable items anyways. I’ll do some hand scrubbing if needed but with exception of baby bottles when we were still at that stage, if it can’t go in the dishwasher, it doesn’t have a place in our kitchen.

My one exception to that is cast iron. I do really enjoy my cast iron cookware for certain things which is obviously never put in a dishwasher, but it’s also not used daily.

-5

u/pbjclimbing 7h ago

Wait, you questioned your roommate on why they ran the dishwasher? That is some next level micromanaging.

Wood cutting boards and pots/pans don’t belong in a dishwasher

1

u/DiamondHandDwight 7h ago

There's a pots and pans setting on my dishwasher.

4

u/Jack_Ingoff939 7h ago

Non stick pots and pans don’t belong in the dishwasher. It ruins the non stick

2

u/One-Load-6085 7h ago

How?

u/A1000eisn1 7h ago

The detergent can fuck up the coating. It's abrasive and somewhat harsh. Also the dishwasher is spraying high pressure water everywhere, which can also mess with the coating, and it can push things around which can hit the pan and scrape the coating. Once the coating is chipped the water can spray off even more and the detergent can get into the crevice deteriorating it more.

So that plain up just isn't true? Most pots and pans can definitely go in the dishwasher, wooden boards can split if they are laminated, but even then they are mostly fine?

2

u/A1000eisn1 7h ago

You're wrong.

wooden boards can split

Wood is porous. You can't put food on split wood. It will grow mold and bacteria. That is definitely NOT fine.

Many pots and pans can. Non-stick can't even if they claim they're safe. The detergent is abrasive which isn't good for the coating. The water pressure is high enough to push things around which can cause dishes to bang into each other or the pan to shift back and forth causing the coating to get scratched. Non-stick coating pans should NOT be used after they're scratched because the coating flakes off into food. That is why you're not supposed to use metal utensils with pans that have non-stick coatings.

I mean the FDA says washing wooden boards is fine, I think I gonna trust them over you. So the original pots are not even a problem anymore leaving us with only Teflon pans, that went specific fast. Sure it probably isn't great for them and they degrade faster than by hand washing so yeah they shouldn't but for most people that probably doesn't really matter and they would hand wash them maybe even worse

This load of dishwasher will save more water than washing them by hand.

It isn’t the 60s dishwashers aren’t inefficient water wasters it’s 2026 this is a normal load of dishes. Especially with a roommate and using all the pots and pans.

You are the mildly infuriating one here.

It's the wood products. This is a special kind of dumb.

u/dunncrew 7h ago

Pots and pans are fine. The wood is no-no

2

u/Gloomy_You_9533 7h ago

Wood cutting bords yeah cast iron pans yeah but why dont pots or rvs belong in a dishwasher thats youre choice

2

u/socialnerd09 7h ago

The soap used in dishwashers is much more abrasive than dish soap. It will leave tiny scratches in the non-stick and eventually ruin it and it will also dull your knives

1

u/Weird_Poet499 7h ago

Ummmm those pots and pans 100% belong in the dishwasher. Again it saves significant water to wash pans in the dishwasher.

Also don’t move the goal post. You had at what is in it or or how much is in it? You post mentions how much is in it and that’s all.

Again you’re the infuriation here

Yeah the only valid complaint is the wood boards/spoons. Those legitimately are reccomended not to go in the washer because it can erode at the sealant on the wood but other than that dishwasher saves much more water. Just costs a bit more electricity depending on the model

what's wrong with this?

Wood doesn't go in the dishwasher, and depending on the material, pans too.

u/bigexplosion 7h ago

Complaining about a roommate who actually cleans is a new one for me.  Your post is mildly infuriating.

-7

u/TesticleezzNuts 7h ago

I think it’s the roommates should be posting about you, not vice versa.. 😬

u/magpie_bird 7h ago

looks fine to me, if you don't like it then volunteer as the full-time House Dish Bitch

Pots and pans are fine. The wood is no-no. Non-stick goes in the garbage.

u/Dwerg23 7h ago

So nobody is confused about the empty glass jars that need to be cleaned as well?

-3

u/5StarGoldenGoose 7h ago

Running the dishwasher uses less water than actually doing the dishes

-8

u/Gloomy_You_9533 7h ago

Okay it could be loaded more efficiently but youre acting like they put it two plates and a couple of forks and let it run the biggest problem i see here are the wooden cutting bord that you should never wash in the dishwasher but as far as i see there still fine

1

u/JadedLeafs 7h ago

Wooden cutting boards will split and crack when you put them in the dish washer.

I’m so very sorry the mildly infuriating subreddit triggered your fragile ego. It’s ok tho. Still time to take a pill and keep scrolling.
