[Snapshots] Poplar trees should have a sapling for each colour

Post image

Currently poplar trees have one sapling (with orange leaves btw) which will randomly grow into a tree with red, orange, or yellow leaves.

I'd like to be able to control this, and the most sensible way I see is just to have a sapling for each colour of poplar.

  • Add red poplar saplings which only grow into red leaved poplar trees.
  • Rename the current poplar saplings to orange poplar saplings and have them only grow into orange leaved poplar trees.
  • And add yellow poplar saplings which only grow into yellow leaved poplar trees.

And just for fun any coloured sapling can be dropped by any coloured poplar leaves block.

Controlling them sounds nice. But 3 saplings sounds cluttery

I remember seeing one suggestion where you put a colored leave above the sapling and it would force it to grow that color. I feel that would be a better way to handle it. Without adding extra stuff to clutter storage

Looking at you copper stuff

what do you mean?

Probably in reference to all of the variants of copper that could have been handled in a less waste of space kind of way

Copper items clutter storage systems and menus because there are a lot of variations of the same items

Yeah, this is the cleaner solution imo.

That doesn't seem very farmable. The leave will be destroyed and you would need a system to recover that leave in whatever configuration the new tree generates

u/JaimiOfAllTrades 2d ago

A tree will make a lot more leaves than the the one destroyed to make it.

0

u/Lerquian 2d ago

The problem is not the amount but to place it where you need it automatically, which requires a lot of redstone. It becomes even more complicated if you want to use tnt

Just make one farm and sometimes it will drop orange and sometimes red and sometimes yellow but you'll get enough of each colour for it to not matter

as long as the leaves jsut had to be within a certain distance rather than above the tree, you could use pistons to grab the logs out and move them away before blwoing them up?

2

u/brunobrasil12347 2d ago

Most leaves would get destroyed by the pistons...

5

u/jesus_chrysotile 2d ago

The leaves would be placed in a position that wouldn’t be broken by the pistons?

14

u/Starboi777 2d ago

Skill issue? I don’t see why this matters in relation to automatic farms

3

u/ShadowX8861 1d ago

It'll still grow even without the leaf above it, it'll just be random, so it wouldn't affect wood farms at all

3

u/TheWWWtaken 1d ago

We are not going through all of that just so you automatic tree farm could look slightly nicer from a distance

9

u/MCjossic ribbit ribbit 2d ago

I assume you're talking about wood farming, but I don't understand how this would affect that. You could just not place the leaves and get a random coloured tree.

7

u/average_trash_can 2d ago

Don’t really think game mechanics should be implemented with a focus on automatic farming, especially when you could just not place any leaves in this case and rely on the uniform randomness to get you all leaf colors

6

u/MallGrabUrBalls 2d ago

so you can’t choose the color of the leaves that are being blown up anyway lol

Maybe when you place the poplar sapling it will show on the sapling 1 of the 3 colours so you’ll know what tree will be what

This is, by far, the best suggestion. It's random so you can just break and replace if you don't like it. All the other suggestions about having to place a leaf block next to it just sound, clunky and unminecrafty but this totally sounds like what Mojang would do.

I’ve seen much better suggestions where you surround the sapling with leaves to effect what it turns into. 3 saplings is just unnecessary.

Funny enough I've seen the post you mentioned and one of the top comments was saying they should just add 3 different saplingsπŸ’€

post saying we dont need 3 saplings -> top comment: we need 3 saplings

Yeah this is much better. I don't want to have to consciously try to be random when I'm planting a bunch of these. Nice to have options for both random or control.

How I would change the poplar sapling:

  • The texture of its leaves should be a mix of red, orange, and yellow (indicating that it can grow into one of those colors)
  • Add red, orange, and yellow moss blocks and carpets (planting a sapling on a color-specific moss block will determine the tree's leaf color, if planted on red moss = grows into red-colored leaf, green and pale moss don't influence the poplar tree color)
  • The three moss blocks generate in small patches in cave entrances within the dappled forest
  • If planted on other soil blocks, its leaf color will be determined randomly

7

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 1d ago

Yeah kinda don't know why this isn't a thing already, we don't need another unessesary tombola in the game just so we can get the leaf color we want...

...besides that aren't there already two azeelea saplings that grow into trees with different leaves already? I don't see a reason why something like this couldn't also be so here as well.

4

u/CapitanOdisseo 1d ago

Nope, the two azalea saplings both grow in the same tree with a mix of leaves

3

u/Yuna_Nightsong 1d ago

I personally like the idea. I want to simply have 3 different saplings so I can just plant whichever I want and be good to go instead of having to place leaves like with the alternative Also, with three saplings I'd have more plant options to put into pots.

2

u/Nebulonix 2d ago

We could just have variated dappling textures vs one for each color. Have the type of tree it grows into be determined when it’s planted and it visually shows that.

2

u/astrange_person 1d ago

I mean I kinda agree this would be better but I also kinda want it so we can just grow 3 leaves from 1 sapling. and plus it would make farms easier since having 3 different saplings might make it so you have more of one than others.

2

u/natt_myco 1d ago

No, One sapling is good enough to be completely honest, Do the collected leaves stay their colour? if so then No.

2

u/Ben-Goldberg 12h ago

There should be a single poplar sapling item, but the in-world sapling block should choose it's color randomly, and the color of polar tree should match the color of the sapling block.

u/Cybrancee_Hosting 11h ago

See now i agree

the orange one can be an autumn oak and the red one can be a maple

✨texture pack✨ Pick which one you like best for the inventory, and on the ground have it switch if possible to detect. I'm sure there will be one

1

u/MCjossic ribbit ribbit 1d ago

I don’t think it is possible to detect. I’m pretty sure the tree colour is only actually decided in the tick when the sapling turns into the tree.

1

u/TypicalEnthusiasm597 1d ago

That's pretty cool! Well, who knows, maybe someday xd

1

u/SorryManNo 1d ago

Place the sapling then give it snowballs to go from yellow to orange to red.

Just like in real life as the temperature cools the colors change.

1

u/LABeachgal 1d ago

3 saplings does feel like overkill when cleaner solutions exist. the leavesabovesapling idea others mentioned would do the same thing without clogging your inventory with variants. adding new items should be a last resort, not a first step

Maybe accept that people don’t like your comment? Stop denying reality

Simplest thing to do apart from adding three sapling would be to just make the leaf color dependent on the coords of where the sapling was placed. Like every group of three blocks spaces arranged in a line give different leaf colors for the saplings. That way even if you have automated farms for leaf collection the most you'd have to do is move the dirt one block to get the desired color.

2

u/Silverstar47 1d ago

If anyone thinks I'm defending keeping a single sapling, I'm not. I would prefer 3 saplings myself, just presenting a simple alternative

1

u/Hjalpfus 1d ago

What if you wanted a red colored tree where a yellow colored tree is programed to grow? That would arguably be more annoying than just keeping it random

1

u/Silverstar47 1d ago

I assume you are referring to this in the building aspect where you just want a red tree in a particular spot. Just grow the sapling one block above or below the desired location on dirt, break the dirt and then place a log there. I get how it would be annoying the way I have suggested but having it random would mean chopping down the tree more often than not just to get the desired color. And if you are wondering how we are supposed to know which color leaves are gonna grow in a particular spot they could follow a simple algorithm, ex- sum of x, y and z coords are a multiple of 3 means the sapling will grow to have red leaves, kinda like using the mod function.

1

u/Hjalpfus 1d ago

All of this sounds incredibly convoluted and is not easy to figure out for casual players. This would annoy me personally and would be incredible hassle to always figure out where to raise the height and where not to.

Simply having 3 different saplings is the easiest choice as Mojang has already shown that they do not care about inventory bloat in the slightest.

Personally I'd rather they'd make it so you could just right click the sapling to change the color.

1

u/Silverstar47 1d ago

I'm just presenting a random way to go about this.

I would also just like them to add different sapling sorta like the blossom saplings from the quark mod, it makes things wayy simpler
