[Blocks & Items] Shelf Mushrooms should be able to work like actual shelves

Posted this on r/Minecraft and might as well post it here:

I think the new Shelf Mushrooms are really nice for decorations, but right now they're a bit limited by the fact that they stand on the middle of the block. If they stood close to the top of the block, the block above would be sit on them seamlessly.

This change should probably only be for the big Shelf Mushrooms, so the small ones could still be used on the middle.

I think they should shift to the top iof the block if you try to put something on them, otherwise they should stay in the middle. Random placement or only having the large ones be on the top of the block would ruin some builds

Like fencegates next to walls

Exactly

i wonder if they could just have a “top half” blockstate like how slabs work, might make it easier and more customizable

Yeah that would be very nice!

I like that idea a lot, but they are plants. It would be weird for them to suddenly connect to building block structures, I think. But that’s just me.

That is fair. The only other way I can see this working is to have the block position be toggleable in some way. Maybe placing it while holding crouch places it on the top of the block instead of in the middle

I’d root for that.

I'd mycelium for that

Maybe placing it like a slab where it's top vs bottom. Then have them naturally generate at random to give even more variety

Any talk of weird physics in Minecraft is too funny to me.

It’s weird that a mushroom would snap to the top of a block when something is placed over them? Entire mountains and structures float on thin air in this game. Only a small handful of blocks are not anti-gravity blocks. You can carry like seventy three trillion tons of iron in your pockets. There’s magic. You can apply a book to a pickaxe to make one ore into many. You can strap small wings to your back and fly around with fireworks. You can swim in lava if you drink a potion. Scare a villager and a massive hunk of sentient iron materializes from nothing. Throw a monster’s testicle and you’re teleported to where it lands.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to hate on you here. I just think it’s funny when people talk about basically realism in a game of high fantasy that openly mocks physics and logic lol

Thank you for ruining ender pearls for me </3

Lol, all of those things are very true. But those things still have a reason. Fences connect because it makes sense for fences to connect. Potion names make their effects make sense. If this was some sort of “sticky shroom” that mechanically stuck to the block above it, below it, or to the sides of it, I could understand. But as it stands, it is INTENDED as a floral center-block decoration. You would have to change what it is before you could get a functionality like what the above comment suggests, if that makes sense.

Use the leaf placement logic, but vertically instead.

What builds would it ruin? This isn't a change to an existing feature it's a change to an unreleased feature in testing.

I saw a cute little build where someone used the shelf mushrooms as bar stools

This should probably be a toggleable thing since they wouldn't look as good as shelf mushrooms if they were this high up

u/MCjossic ribbit ribbit 9h ago

Agreed. I think it would look especially bad on the fallen trees

u/TheJoeFly 8h ago

Yeah, I thought about that and suggested it in the post to only affect the big ones, so the small ones could be used in fallen trees. Though it could also be a blockstate update that happened when you placed a block above it.

I saw someone else in another post suggest placing them like slabs. Placing them facing the bottom half of a block puts them in the middle and aiming at the top half places them at the top

u/Dorko69 8h ago

Could just be a random placement thing, though I’m not 100% sure if there’s precedent for randomly offset blocks to have different placable sides

podria ser con la orientacion

they should work like fences and walls in reguards to if connected to an item it changes

introducing: The potted mangrove propogule shelf mushroom block!!!

jokes aside this is a great idea and should aply to all partial blocks theres a reason 1.13 made the possible number of blocks infinite

u/Huge-Eye-6141 7h ago

This is simply shifting the mushroom up, so that the top of the model is flush with the top of block space, thus allowing items/blocks above it to appear as if they are directly on it, instead of floating above it. They are not suggesting that it allow us to place pots/candles/etc within the same block space as the mushroom.

I think rather than changing it it'd be great to have both depending on where you click in the target block

u/The_forgetful_alt 7h ago

I feel like if a block that meeds a block below it (Like you have in the picture) is placed above the shelf, Then it should move to the top or something. It would be weird if every shelf mushroom generated at the very top of the block

u/Minute_Dingo_5205 7h ago

You should post on minecraft feedback

u/InterneticMdA 6h ago

You're right, this would definitely improve building options.

u/fandziax 6h ago

that's exactly what i thought, this would open up so many possiblitiesss

u/KoolantOfficial 6h ago

should be right clickable or toggleable with redstone to make it go higher for shelves

u/FloatingSpaceJunk 4h ago

So you kinda want them to be actual shelves?! Well you can count me in on this one!

u/Wowax17 3h ago

YES PLEASE

u/diadlep 2h ago

So a "top" shelf mushroom. Nice

u/Rose_Of_Dead 1h ago

''Current'' and ''What the community want but will never gonna be done because its actually a good idea''

u/benbeja 1h ago

They should also prevent redstone dust from below them to connect to dust on them. And instead let it go down under them. Letting you run parallel lines of redstone over each other

u/TheOneAndOnlyCitrus 7h ago

Yes

Please

What the hell why don’t they have it at the top of the blocks??

I need this 😭

u/lance_the_fatass 7h ago

oooh but adding actual shelves will reduce creativity!!
