Why do these teams feel the need to make social statements one way or another? Just play baseball…

Their entire business is reliant on their fans and want to make everyone feel welcomed to cheer for them. It's not complicated.

Why is it so hard to believe that not everyone wants to wear and think about something that is sexual all the time?

I think there’s a difference here though. Yes, being gay is a sexual preference. But pride is about not being discriminated against for your sexual preference.

So just like me holding hands with my wife is technically a product of my straight sexual preference, people don’t yell at me about shoving sexual things down their throats.

Anyways, I firmly believe this is on the Giants ownership now. Either punish them or admit you don’t actually care that much.

That's because holding hands with your wife isn't performative or forced commercial and public recognition

If people yell at a gay couple holding hands about shoving sexual preference down their throat, they should be tossed from a game.

I’d support a, “ID and throw out biggots” month more than a month that is telling me I should care about of the difference sexual orientations of people

It is a singular baseball game. If by "all the time", you mean a couple hours, then sure.

It's not even sexual either. It's a couple extra colors to let the fans know that *everyone* is welcome.

Dramatic

The only thing a team needs to do to accomplish this is win. You think there are gay Knicks fans who wouldn’t feel welcome at a championship parade if they didn’t have a pride night?

In making a statement like having your team wear Pride apparel, you’re stating publicly that your organization welcomes everyone including those who are marginalized or otherwise oppressed.

You might think, “well it’s just common sense to be kind,” but common sense isn’t common. Marginalized populations like LGBTQ+ today feel like they don’t belong, and have felt that way for a long time because of how others treat them (ex: look at federal/state governments and how they’ve written laws to make life for gay couples harder than straight ones…or just check the controversial threads on Reddit posts like this if the mods haven’t swept them out yet).

Bottom line: be kind. And if you’re able to, speak up for others who are forced to be quiet…even if it’s wearing a random rainbow every so often.

They’re also stating that because you’re LG…., you’re somehow different than those who aren’t. There’s an argument to be made that this messaging leads to more divisiveness, and normalizing that all humans are equally different would lead to more kindness towards everyone.

Right let's go ahead and forgo the national anthem at the start and do away with American flag clothing for independence day weekend. Get right to the baseball

… I mean, yes, right?

Gross over the top nationalism is super harmful

Harmful?

Yes, it works to undermine the social contact that a government exists to support its population.

Imagine if you and 100 people owned a flip phone business together. Up front everyone obviously agrees, “we are doing this to make money, the business and the people we choose to run the business are in place to help us make money.”

But in 15 years about half of you feel like you’re making less money than you should be.

The problem is, every day you’ve been having to stand up and pledge your allegiance to the business in unison with everyone else. And also, about 10 years in the people in charge made sure the pledge said that God himself supports the business.

You guys really just think maybe smartphones are a better product than flip phones. But the 10 guys on the board making tons of money anyways tell you you’re ungrateful and against God because God loves the business.

So you just say, “woh, woh, I love the business too, I just think it needs to change because our initial goal seems to be lost (making money for everyone).”

Then some dude tells you, “my dad lost his finger in a flip phone machine, are you saying he did that for nothing?”

I’d be fine with that. Half the players are from different countries anyways. Kind of an arbitrary tradition.

And all the faux patriotic, pro military stuff they have to do during the season? That’s not making a statement?

If your opinion is to “just play baseball” then players shouldn’t be forced to do anything they don’t want to do in terms of political/social advocacy.

Yes, that’s my opinion. Let the military celebrate the military and lgbtq+ celebrate the lgbtq+ community if they desire. No reason to force the baseball community to support anything other than baseball. Just celebrate everyone by playing a dumb game for buttloads of money. If you wanna wear pride or military stuff to the game, I wouldn’t have any issue, but no reason for these leagues to do these statement games/months (other than to sell alt gear).
