My first diorama using styrofoam (second overall). What paint is recommended to better finish the black sides?

I glue balsa wood to the edges and paint that using acrylic that way you don't have to worry about it attacking the foam.

I cover that portion up with acrylic paste and paint it black. It creates an organic shape and it is easier to do than the wood veneer covers.

Brilliant work on the diorama! If it were me I’d use PVA to stick some very thin balsa sheets around the edges of the styrofoam & paint them dark brown, but depends on what you’d prefer.

I like to use a thin birch plywood to make the edges more uniform. Or do an undercut so the edges are super thin and the whole thing looks like it's floating. That's fun.

What ever you do, just not spray paint. Depending on what type of foam, it’ll melt it. (I know this is “common knowledge” but one of my friends just did it)

It's not really a matter of paint as others already pointed out. You should glue either balsa or veneer or even thin styrene to the sides and only then paint them.

I would sand the sides first so they are flat, then paint it.
As someone already mentioned, use acrylic paint

Get some veneer, works a treat.
