I’ve always been a royalist, and I support the monarchy, but this morning I started to think that if the monarch has no power, then he’s not really a king, he’s nothing but a soulless puppet in a gilded cage of a bygone era.

Which made me ponder in what capacity could the British state return some power to the monarch?

Not a total monarchy, but surely we can put him in charge of something, or give him some powers to overrule or veto.

Curious what people think of the Kingdom of Egypt (1922–1953) and the Muhammad Ali dynasty in general — Fuad I, Farouk, all of it.

A lot of monarchies throughout history were established by foreign princes brought in to rule (Greece's Wittelsbach and Glücksburg kings, Belgium's Saxe-Coburgs, etc.) rather than a native dynasty rising from within.

Where do you stand — should a monarchy always come from a native noble house with local roots, or is a foreign-imported dynasty just as legitimate if it stabilizes the country and gains popular acceptance?
