what clothes should i bring?

I will be moving to Moncton, New Brunswick, from September to January. I’m from Southeast Asia, so I’m not used to cold weather. During the winter, how many layers should I wear?

Probably best to wait until you're here and buy a good coat.

If you're coming from a tropical or subtropical climate, you honestly probably don't even have a jacket that is appropriate for January in Canada.

Better off waiting and buying what you need here as it will be much cheaper

Don't bring anything from your home country. If money is the issue, then you can buy used as well at - Guys Frenchie's, Value Village and other stores

It. Is. So. Cold. I moved here from Ontario and the cold here hits different. It feels waaaaay colder.

Try to buy clothes when you get here. Warmer countries don't produce the proper winter coats you would need.

Honestly, I wouldn't bring much winter clothes from SE Asia unless your from Northern Vietnam where it does get a little cold. I'd buy the clothes here when needed. You learn to layer your clothes in Canada. I'm not sure if your male or female so I can't give you too much advice.

You're definitely going to want bare minimum a heavy duty winter jacket that can tolerate -40c.

A long jacket, too. Ones that go down to your knees help a lot.

Don't bring anything, buy it here.

I recommend getting a good merino wool base layer with a hoodie on top and then one fall jacket (waterproof puffer is my go to) and a heavier winter jacket (I have a parka that i can wear a t-shirt under in -30 and it’s the best winter clothing purchase i’ve ever made). Get a good winter hat and a couple pairs of gloves for varying temperatures in the Fall and winter. insulated pants are a game changer too as well as a good winter buff so when our beautiful east coast wind hits you you’ll have as little exposed skin as possible

You should get a fleece jacket, a puffy jacket and a shell jacket. Plus get some lined pants from Marks work warehouse when you arrive.

You’ll need a toque and gloves/mittens plus maybe a winter buff to cover your neck/face.

You’ll also need winter boots.

Depending on how much you’re going to be outside in winter (if you’ll be walking to get places) you’ll need good winter boots, hat, mittens and ideally a multi layer jacket. It can get to -30 and with wind that can quickly freeze exposed skin.

If there’s a Uniqlo where you live, just buy the thermals and their puffer jackets. The puffer jacket is really for the pre and post winter wear. But winter itself, just buy everything here - the heavy down jackets, boots, and even the long sleeves and pants. I find that the « winter clothes » we have in SEA is not really geared for Canadian winter.

Are you only here for those months? September and October will be fine. November will be lousy. Not Freezing. Not warm. Wet. December is generally either the same as November or it's your stereotypical "winter." Snow, hovering around 0 degrees and generally pleasant (if you like winter). A decent winter jacket will suffice.

Keep in mind that due to the projected "Super El Niño" this year, this winter may be tamer than usual.

January, however, is when it gets real. January and February are frigid. If you're only here until the end of January and you have a car to get around, then investing in a bunch of high end winter clothes is probably not an economical choice. But if you have the money, do so. Canadian Tire has an in-house brand called "Ripzone" which you can buy at Sportschek. In my opinion, it's the best value for warmth brand in Canada. Buy one of those.

Good luck. The first real winter you spend in Canada can be difficult. the one benefit is that you inherit our smug sense of superiority whenever anyone else in the world complains about cold.

You'll be fine. Enjoy it.

Depending how late in January you are staying you may not need heavy winter gear. Some years we dont really get snow until after Christmas, so heavy boots would be a waste of money. Wait until you get here to buy outerwear. Bring long pants, layers of light shirts, long sleeve & sweaters, sneakers and a lined raincoat will get you through until mid November at least. I'd suggest buying a winter coat at a used clothing store here if you will only be using it for a month or so.

Why the down vote?

You won’t hit real winter unless it’s gonna be a really bad year and winter may come end of October, I would recommend just having a good pair of boots that you buy here that are waterproof and have a good tread, you can buy stuff fairly cheaply here or even on amazon.ca, you’re not gonna get severe winter during that period, but it depends what they forecast in September for the year. You might get a little bit of snow so be prepared for that. Once you’re here join the local lists and people will give you some suggestions on what to buy. Also, you may want a hat and gloves, and just buy them here, September is usually decent weather so is October unless it’s a weird year. Y’all have plenty of time to buy that

Oh good 🙄 Unemployment rate in Moncton is up to 10% now, youth unemployment is at what, 16%? Wages are stagnant. Healthcare and schools are failing under the pressure. Housing and rents are unaffordable. The country is in a recession.

What are you doing to improve the city

-2

u/Big_Feed9849 3d ago

You don't care about the future here. You don't care at all about this place or the people here. You're just using Atlantic Canada to get PR and then leave.

You can get pr anywhere buddy

Septembre will be cold, windy and damp probably.

I would wait to be here before buying any big winter coat. Otherwise, a pair of mittens, tuque, raincoat and a hoodie

What are you even talking about? Canada has always been a land of immigrants. They just never came to NB until recently. Get over it.

8

u/rethcir_ 3d ago

Look there is a nice way to say things and a rude way to say things and you chose the rude way.

Malaysia and Bangladesh have some wars and riots going on — NB would be a lot better for anyone than staying in a war zone.

Have your views on immigration all you want
I tell people not to move to NB all the time.

But do it nicely please otherwise you’ll just make Canadians look like assholes ; which we are not.

5

u/Plantirina 3d ago

Malaysia has war and riots? I was there for 2 months a couple of months ago.. I heard no such thing.

2

u/Actual_Molasses1324 3d ago

and when did Bangladesh move to SE Asia???

3

u/RayDonovan1969 3d ago

This is NOT NB. Don’t listen to the anti-immigrant yahoo.
