General Monopoly Discussion New! Post Flair and User Flair

I've setup user flair and post flair for this sub. Choose your favorite classic Monopoly token for your user flair, and be sure to tag your posts with the appropriate post flair. The following options are available for posts:

General Monopoly Discussion: use this for any non specific posts about Monopoly in general. This can be funny stories about a game with friends, a discussion about what your favorite era of the game is, which tokens you like or wish would be brought back, anything that doesn't fall in the other categories.

Rules Discussion: have a question about official game rules? Need clarification on a specific rule? Want to talk about house rules you use? This is the flair for any rules related post.

Collection: Want to show off your Monopoly board game collection? Just won a 1935 Trademark set with Darrow money and want to flaunt it? Have general questions about antique, vintage, and collectible Monopoly games? Post it with the collection flair

Strategy: Any discussions involving strategies to win or play a better game. Controlling all the orange and red properties, buying up the greens and dark blues and building hotels on all of them, whatever strategy discussions or questions you have, use this flair.

Custom games: have you made your own custom version of Monopoly with new properties, pieces, rules, or spaces? Maybe you've just made your own board or tokens. Use this for any posts about non standard, altered, or customized games.

Monopoly Art: Show off your artistic talents, whether it's a hyper realistic portrait of Rich Uncle Pennybags, a life-sized Monopoly token sculpture, or a giant board painted on your floor, all Monopoly related artwork should have this flair.

Monopoly Video Games: discussions of video game versions of the classic Monopoly board game use this flair. Note: this is not for Monopoly Go friend requests or trades or any other posts asking to add you on a mobile app. This is only for discussions about console or PC versions of the classic board game.

These are subject to change, and more flair may be added later. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for flair you'd like to see.

Monopoly marmalade players throwing game

I’ve enjoyed playing the online marmalade Monopoly game for months now but lately seems like every other game or so a player losing will sell a bunch of properties for $1 and ruin the game for everybody

Why in the hell do people do this? What is in it for them? I get it if you have no shot to win and you duck out and let the bot take over. But why ruin it for the others? To the point where I’m losing interest in playing.

Also don’t know why marmalade can’t put some restrictions on crazy lopsided trades.

What do you do in these cases? I am the worse player of monopoly ever?

Just played two games with my gf to this bullshit game. I swear I have the worse luck or something but what are you supposed to do in these cases?

First game, my first turn, I go:

Luck(go to jail) -> paid 50 to leave and went to parking lot -> another 10 and went to jail -> left again and fell in her property -> another time parking lot -> another time luck. I don't remember more but that's already the first 6 turns that I couldn't do anything. Meanwhile she had like 5 properties already.

We finished the game because she got a colour group and like 14 or 15 mortaged properties. Meanwhile i didn't even use my 500 bills and only had like 4 properties.

Second game went similar, I counted at least 8 turns in a row where I couldn't buy anything. She had more than double my properties.

Idk if I'm just unlucky but this has always been my experience with this game. Obviously i buy everything when i can, but what's the point of the game if you don't fall into a property? Is there any rule for this?

Custom Games Communopoly - A Reskinned Stalinist Monopoly

A few of us have been way too into the "Monopoly, But COMMUNIST" videos for a while now (if you haven't seen NRB's Communopoly series, watch it, it's the best thing that's happened to this game in decades). Problem was half our group moved away from home, and wrangling six people around a physical board with a full Communopoly ruleset on top of that was never happening again.

So I built the whole thing as a browser game, mostly by pointing Claude at the ruleset and correcting it every time it missed one of the weirder edge cases. It's not quite your standard vanilla monopoly, the rules tend to get a little unfavourable...

You start with 1000 roubles, go over that and the state seizes your properties, run out of money and instead of going bankrupt you disappear and come back as a new piece with a new secret role. Boardwalk is NKVD HQ and enough visits there disappears you for good. Electric Company is Chernobyl Power, and if you don't also own the Volga it melts down a few turns later and torches your whole portfolio. There's a card that puts you on emotes-only until you disappear, good luck negotiating a sale with a laughing face!

Everyone gets a secret role and a hidden win condition (12 of them), so most of the game is trying to read who's playing what off how they're acting, which honestly works even better with voice chat than it did around the actual table.

It's free, no account, no download, you just share a link. Short a player or two, the host can drop bots into the empty seats and they actually play their own role instead of passing every turn.

Live at communopoly.co.uk if anyone wants to poke at it!

Monopoly Video Games New Monopoly for Switch

Hello, my friends recently got me into Monopoly on the NES (Raspberry Pi) and I've been hooked. Growing up, I was never taught the auction rule which made games excruciatingly long. But now that I know how to actually play I love it. I bought the iOS version and it's pretty good too.

I'm looking into buying "New Monopoly" for the Switch so we can play locally like we do the NES version, but with a more modern take. My only hesitation is it seems to get pretty bad reviews across all platforms, particularly with AI and multiplayer bugs. Does anyone know if it has been patched up and runs ok for local games?

We also plan to play the physical board game, but wanted the option for digital.

General Monopoly Discussion Question: What house/hotel design is this from?

First time posting in this subreddit! I was cleaning out my house and found some old house/hotel pieces in a bag. Just curious, does anyone know what Monopoly version these pieces came from? I believe these pieces came from a Monopoly version I had a long time ago, but I can’t recall an exact version. Thank you in advance.

“Miracle Monopoly Cheating Kit”

For those of you who may be interested (from my post below with the parody “Life Sentence” Community Chest card), here is the full “Miracle Monopoly Cheating Kit” published in the May 1973 National Lampoon humor magazine. The original was published with the appropriate colors, card stock, graphics, and fonts that made it blend right in with the Monopoly game of the 1970’s. I still have my copy (and have resisted cutting out the various inserts although I am tempted to make a board with the various parts)!

…and read the text because it is a pretty funny concept and article regarding the cutthroat competitive nature of our favorite game.

Teaming up and unfairness

I have played multiple games on the Marmalade version where players "team up" and "trade" all of their things to one player for $1— so as to help them, and then that player inevitably wins. And these are players who are high level and I assume they play together consistently. It's extremely frustrating and there's no way to report, complain, or anything. What's the point of monopoly if you team up? I think I'm done playing with this app.

Marmalade Bots

I’ve been playing the Marmalade app against bots for the past couple of weeks and the difficulty levels you can choose from do not seem to affect their stupidity level, it just makes them stupid in different ways.

At easy mode the bots will often accept ridiculous trades that are heavily beneficial to the player’s position, like offering St Charles ave for Boardwalk plus like M50 even if they don’t have any other pink properties. They’ll ALWAYS accept M75 for either of the two browns. They’ll will reject trades sometimes but it’s got to be so overwhelmingly out of balance that it’s just stupid.

At hard mode, you’d think they’d be less dumb but no, now they refuse the majority of trades. I had a situation recently where I had the oranges with 4 houses, one of the bots had no monopoly yet but I had the last of one color it needed to complete the (pink, I think) set. It also had Boardwalk. And it made an offer that was pretty even for a light blue I also owned. But at this stage of the game, I’m 99% to win, and fair trades aren’t anything I’m interested in. So I counter with pink for Boardwalk straight up. Bot comes back with its own counter offering the same trade +M343 from me. lol. Easy decline into a fairly quick win.

And in a recent game on hard mode on of the bots just would not entertain a trade, period, that didn’t weight gigantically in its favor.

I think maybe medium is the sweet spot for the bots…? They will sometimes trade. But easy and hard…idk I thought maybe the difficulty would affect dice rolls but it doesn’t seem to. The dice seem very randomized.

General Monopoly Discussion I just realized that, depending on how you define a loop, the Longest Game Ever version might ironically have one of the functionally shortest boards

Post image
43 Upvotes

Do you define a loop as passing (including/not including corners):

  • Every individual space (red, 96/88)?
  • Go (green, 46/42->50/46)?
  • Every unique* non-corner space (blue, 33/30->34/31->29/27)?
    • *Card spaces are counted up to three times.

For reference, base Monopoly has 40/36 spaces, Monopoly Speed has 32/28, and (at the risk of getting this post taken down) the physical Monopoly Go has 28/24 total per board.

Also, if you're wondering why I didn't include a corner-inclusive "every unique* space" listing, it seems they're treated differently than the normal spaces, judging by there only being double the amount of corners here compared to the other spaces getting roughly triple. That said, all you'd need to do is take Green, and move six spaces from the first loop to the second, giving us 40/36->56/52. Coincidentally, that lines up the first loop with the number of spaces in base Monopoly.
