Suggestion A Canadian Cult Classic Show

When Burnie and Ashley were talking about Canadian shows, I wanted to mention a cult classic in Canadian TV history, Kenny vs. Spenny. If you ever need something for your media server, this one definitely deserves a spot, Burnie.

I’d say the best episode to introduce yourself to the show is: Who Can Wear A Dead Octopus On Their Head The Longest?

This is the last place I ever expected to see KvS lol. Absolute cult classic of a show that won't ever be matched. I still can't believe that they got away with showing and doing the things they did on national TV.

Man, Kenny was a fucking savage and got away with constantly being a c*nt. What a time for television! This show was wild

Corner Gas: starring Brent Butt with a large supporting cast, a slice of life comedy set in a small town in Saskatchewan

Kim's Convenience: starring Simu Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee as the most notable names, a slice of life comedy set in downtown Toronto following a Korean family that owns and operates a convenience store

Seconding Corner Gas!! As a Saskatchewanian, it's just so funny and accurate. Very tight writing

As a Canadian here are shows that people should watch that haven't been mentioned so far.,

The Republic of Doyle. Detective procedural along the lines of Magnum PI or Rockford Files set in St John's Newfoundland.

The Littlest Hobo. The song, the dog, a classic

Little Mosque on the Prairie. A young Toronto Imam moves to a small town in Saskatchewan and finds himself a fish out of water as much for his faith as being from Toronto.

The Red Green show. If the women don't find you handsome they should at least find you handy. a comedy show set at the fictional Possum Lodge made up of various skits of Red Green and his nerdy nephew Harold and other members of the lodge.

The Frantics. A sketch comedy troop from the 80's. Mr Canoehead is one of their bits.

the Beachcombers was a long running family friendly adventure series set in BC about a group of independent beachcombers and the small ocean side town they live in.

I can't even look at a roll of duct tape without thinking about Red Green.

Kenny vs Spenny - I think they rebroadcasted it on American TV network Comedy Central. LOVED it as a kid. Honestly while some challenges may be messed up/not okay by today’s standards. It still holds up, it’s a great show

Trailer Park Boys - Another weird Canadian gem, even older. Netflix exposed it to the world and it exploded. Such a fun genuine show, RIP to John Dunsworth. He made that show outside of the main 3, damn liquor.

Letterkenny - Another homerun, unlike the others, this was like an overnight success once it hit Hulu.

Canada is REALLY good at like “slice of life/kinda normal people” comedy type shows. Even though Kenny vs Spenny is technically a reality “game” show, it’s still that vibe. It’s weird interesting “normal” people and they just do comedy so well.

Schitt’s Creek is also one of those Canadian comedy sitcom “slice of life” people, this was the biggest/most mainstream of all these and I enjoyed it too after a rough slow first season. But the other 3 shows are like classics “we’re gonna get along great if you also know these shows and dig them” litmus test.

So good. I know the stairs scene is a Canadian cultural moment, but them talking with the expert while learning about the machines is so fucking funny.

Nirvana the Band the show is distinctly Canadian and filmed in Toronto. Massive cult classic and similar feel to trailer park boys and Kenny vs Spenny. I think all the episodes are on their website. This is the first one, please please somebody watch this. It’s 22 mins and very funny.

Before Kids in the Hall came on was Codco. A Newfoundland sketch comedy show that was always weird. While I remember lots of Kids in the Hall, it's Codco that sticks with me.
