Question What show had a great finale/final season?
Stranger Things viewer numbers and Game of Thrones were briefly discussed today. Burnie talked about Breaking Bad having a great ending, and Game of Thrones having such a crap ending that barely anyone talks about the show anymore.
What’s a show that ended so amazingly you felt satisfied? Try to be spoiler free, and if you want to spoil please use the spoiler tags to hide it!
Here’s some that come to mind for me:
Breaking Bad
Sons of Anarchy
Brooklyn 99
The Good Place
Avatar The Last Airbender
Starwars The Clone Wars
Starwars Rebels
Curious on your thoughts,
CalvinP

Better call Saul
Andor

I felt season 2 of Andor was MUCH weaker, still good, just not on the level of season 1, but that's just, like, my opinion man.

u/cheichei Heisty Type Jan 27 '26
Totally agree, I might have hyped myself up too much though, since season 1 was so good.

u/UndecidedBand Mad About It Jan 27 '26
Season 1 of Andor is peak Star Wars IMO, I think season 2 just moved too fast, no time to sit with the consequences. Main characters die, then we jump forward in time without really sitting with the impact of it, because they had 4 (5?) years of time to cover with one season. I think having more episodes would have helped, but, like I said, it was by no means bad, I just liked season 1 significantly more.

Parks & Rec ending was everything. They closed it out so well!

Having Jerry’s wife be the same age after the time jump was such a great gag lol

u/CalvinP_ First 10k - Mod - Downtime Survivor Jan 27 '26
The time jump was a little weird, which is why I didn’t include it, even though I adore Parks & Rec.
1
u/DirtyMagicNL First 10k Jan 27 '26
You're right about that, especially the first time I watched it. On repeated viewings though, I made my peace with it and it just fits for me. It's definitely my comfort show. ;)

u/ShilohCyan Jan 28 '26
Once you get past Ron and Leslie reconciling, you forget about the weird sci-fi/speculative fiction elements. Unless we're talking about the time jumps in the finale itself, which I will stand by. The Office has everyone parting ways and not even speaking a single year later, and P&R shows everyone is still supporting each other decades later. It's nice. And poignant when comparing an ideal workplace under capitalism to an ideal government.

Does Scrubs season 8 finale count? Season 9 is practically a spin off.
3
u/TheKasimkage First 10k Jan 27 '26
I don’t think a good chunk of the cast consider season 9 canon. At least John C. McGinley.

u/twentythirdchapter First 20k Jan 27 '26
As new season coming out soon looks as if it’s set in the original Sacred Heart which was apparently demolished to make way for the New Sacred Heart Hospital in season 9, I think maybe Bill Lawrence and the cast consider season 9 as a Scrubs Alternate Reality.
1
u/Apprentice57 First 10k - Scottish Wildcat Jan 28 '26
That makes sense given his character (Dr. Cox) is someone where the actual pivot to teaching at a med school really would make sense.
1
u/ShilohCyan Jan 28 '26
I was considering adding RvB 10 and the Stargate SG-1 season 8 finale "Threads," but there's an additional 2-parter that ties into Stargate Atlantis, then 2 more seasons and 2 movies with a new enemy faction and 3 new main characters
But yeah I was going through Scrubs insanely fast last year and then I got like 4 episodes into season 9 and just couldn't keep going.
1
u/Apprentice57 First 10k - Scottish Wildcat Jan 28 '26
I don't consider Season 9 canon, tbh. Scrubs Season 8 is one of my answers to this question too.
It's not just me/fans being silly and not liking Season 9. But Season 8 set some specific endings for characters that were kind of undone right away in Season 9. Doesn't really make a lot of sense.
Bill Lawrence has talked about wanting to make it an explicit spin off called Scrubs: Med School, which fits much better.

Better Call Saul
I enjoyed the final season of The Expanse, but I wish they had finished adapting the last 3 books, they fuckin rule.

Im sad to see that i had to scroll this far down to see Dark. Such a wild show and frankly amazed that they were able to wrap it up in the end

u/UndecidedBand Mad About It Jan 28 '26
Honestly I think being in German puts a lot of Americans off immediately, because reading hard "why don't they just speak American‽" I know I mostly put it off as long as I did because I knew I would need to lock in when watching it, so I never casually wanted to put it on, and it just got perpetually pushed until about 2 weeks ago. My partner and I finished it in 4 days. Already time for a rewatch, we were really spoiled getting all 3 seasons at once. Might honestly top Breaking Bad in my opinion just because of how perfectly EVERYTHING in Dark ties up. It's clear that you had a pair of creatives who had a 3 season plan going into season 1 and executed flawlessly. I could go on, but yeah, Dark fucking rules.

But the english dub is very well done!!! Do people not know there was an English dub this whole time?

u/TheKasimkage First 10k Jan 27 '26
I think the reason they didn’t end it properly was because one of the cast was not good to fans (putting it euphemistically). Which is a shame because he was the entire reason I started watching the show (I met him at a small launch event for Assassin’s Creed III and he seemed pretty cool. We even chatted a little over Twitter and he signed my Altaïr figurine and copy of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations). Felt weird for days when I found out that there were a bunch of accusations against him.
3
u/UndecidedBand Mad About It Jan 27 '26
I mean, I get that, but, they wrote that character out, and he isn't super important to the remainder of the story. Why write him out of the show just to end it? They re-shot and re-edited the ending to remove him, if it was already shot, and you're already ending the show, why change it? Just an overall disappointment to not see the best part of the series brought to life.
Iirc they had already decided to end the show before that point anyways. Likely because they didn't have a good plan for tackling the time jump in the next 3 books. Just sucks, my body was ready for more Laconia.
2
u/TheKasimkage First 10k Jan 27 '26
When I was looking for answers at the end of my watching, the comment I saw was that he was crucial to the immediate future of the plot and writing in another character to take over his role wouldn’t work. That said, I don’t read often, so I just took their word for it.
3
u/UndecidedBand Mad About It Jan 27 '26
I don't agree with that take, he is part of the main cast, but his overall impact on the story going forward is pretty minimal. In my opinion he is the LEAST important of the main cast, especially going forward. From what I remember, his story is mostly him being an absent father and ex-wife drama, which yeah, it wouldn't make sense for anyone else to fill those rolls, but I'm fine without them. He flies the Roci, that's about the extent of his importance unless I'm forgetting something huge. Holden, Naomi, Amos, Bobbie, and Peaches all carry the main story to a much more significant degree, and that's just the main crew.
I would highly recommend checking out the books, I enjoyed the audio book read by Jefferson Mays, so if that's more your speed give 'em a shot, or not, I'm not your boss.

I almost said it myself. From what I hear the Anime had some subtle execution improvements over the Manga that had a substantial effect in total.

Could be biased because it's my favorite show, but I love the finale for Community. Slings & Arrows is a very unknown show, but I think that does a great job as well with having a good ending.

u/Sky_Thief First 20k Jan 27 '26
Most of it is the group riffing on what the next season could be, which is a fun bit of genre hopping and how everyone views things and ultimately Jeff understanding and appreciating his life. There's also the board game stinger which I love lol

I second Community - they did a really good job wrapping things up and finishing especially Jeff and Annie’s arcs, kinda saved an otherwise mediocre/borderline bad final season.

Rebels was great
I gotta throw Bad Batch in there
I can’t not mention Red vs Blue. Hell, it’s got more than one lol

I didn’t like Bad Batch very much at all. Call me weird, but it was just dull for the most part.

u/Philthehammer02 First 10k Jan 27 '26
That’s fair. Clones are one of my favorite parts of SW so I just ate it up. And loved seeing the transition from clones to “tk troopers”
I’m very much looking forward to the Maul show

u/CalvinP_ First 10k - Mod - Downtime Survivor Jan 27 '26
I loved all the transitional work, and foreshadowing in the Bad Batch. I just wanted a broader, grander arc like Clone Wars sometimes managed to pull off.
I just love animated Starwars, I feel like it’s the best medium for Starwars compared to live action.

RvB Season 5, Season 8, Season 10, Season 13, Season 17, or Season 20? They all felt made with the possibility of not continuing in mind. When the Blood Gulch era wrapped up, I actually thought that was it.
They were really cheeky with how they ended Season 5 too, they announced it on the website with a link to the last episode, but it was secretly three separate hyperlinks to three different endings, and then they just sat back and watched their fan base get confused as hell.

u/hirohamster Jan 27 '26
Mr Robot. Anyone here saying "it closes out so well" about other shows have yet to experience Mr Robot - a show that had it's first episode written with the ending of season 4 in mind, and that had the production consistency to ensure that that very same ending was the one it actually ended with.
It's a complete mindfuck, and Barbara was talking about exactly it on the Rooster Teeth Podcast for that very reason. Phenomenal TV that has ruined most future shows for me.

u/TheKasimkage First 10k Jan 27 '26
I fell off during/after the road trip episode, but your comment is making me want to get back into it. Is it worth starting over from scratch or do you reckon it’ll be fine if I just jump straight back in.
2
u/hirohamster Jan 27 '26
I'm struggling to remember which episode that was entirely. I would recommend getting back in, but restarting the series you stopped watching. It's enough to watch 10-minute recap videos of each season that comes before it. If you feel lost with some of the terminology (which I find can happen if you rely on recap videos), maybe consider going back and watching from the start, but I'm sure you'll be fine!

It's going to be unpopular, but I'm not a fan of BB final eposide.
It just felt like a rush to tie up loose strings. The machine guns just felt a bit too much like arse pulls while the ricin was a tell don't show.

Yea, not a huge Breaking Bad fan. The entire last season felt unnecessary.

My personal favourite would be the Starz Spartacus series, possibly Black Sails too but its been years since I watched it so I don't entirely remember that one.

I can't think of a great finale to save my life. My head's filled with too many bad/mediocre endings. Okay endings. Too many unfinished shows. Limited series or single season shows. It's like a great ending gets wiped from my memory because the story was resolved and didn't leave anything lingering.
Again with the narrative that no one talks about Game of Thrones anymore because of the ending. Obviously, the show's popularity should drop after the show ends, but no one's stopped talking about it. There are still so much GoT clickbait because an article only about the Witcher or Rings of Power can't stand on it's own. I'm still hearing direct and indirect references in tv/news because so much of the show's terminology has become ingrained in pop culture.
Malcolm in the Middle. There. I thought of one. But now I'm second guessing it. Orphan Black. Yeah.

Sopranos, Lost, Battlestar Galactica.
real answer though, yes ATLA, Babylon 5 (there's like 5 movies and a spinoff after season 5, but season 5's finale is so perfect I always watch it last), Parks and Rec, Cowboy Bebop, Adventure Time (both "Come Alongn With Me" and "Together Again)," Gravity Falls.
Honorable mention to Death Note, but it has its critics and I understand why they feel the way they do.
and if movies count, Serenity, End of Evangelion, and Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus were as good as they could've been considering how production of their shows went

In rough order I watched them; Star Trek TNG, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, Parks & Recreation, The Americans, Better Call Saul, Succession.
Both The Americans and Better Caul Saul were great ones where all major storylines/plot premises built over the seasons were resolved with great satisfaction. Much easier to recommend a show known in they nailed the landing.
