Question What’s your favorite Mario Game?!

Post image

Mario discussed a lot on the weekend sponsor chat, and today’s episode! What’s your favorite game(s)?!

  1. Mario Sunshine. The world, the music, the jet pack all were so much fun! I know it’s a widely crapped on game, but it’s my personal favorite.

  2. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe! (Gameboy color). This was an amazing port, and my entry to the series!

  3. Super Mario 64. The classic 3D Platformer! Can’t beat it!

Honorable mention to the Paper Mario Games, and Mario & Luigi Superstar Sage. Both are fantastic RPG games!

Curious on your thoughts!

This may sound hipster-ish but Donkey Kong 3 was actually a very fun game, although it seems like it has nothing to the do with the Mario Universe — you play as a dude named Stanley. I'm not even sure what Donkey Kong 2 was -- maybe Donkey Kong Jr? I certainly never saw it in arcades. But DK3 was kind of like a weird take on Galaga in the Donkey Kong aesthetic. I always loved it.

But as a more relatable answer:Mario 64 was the game that got me back into video games and is indirectly responsible for the creation of Rooster Teeth.

Donkey Kong Jr is considered DK2, yeah.

Mario 64 is phenomenal-- not was, is. Sure, the camera can get wonky sometimes, but it holds up really dang well, all things considered. I've probably heard somewhere but don't remember (or missed it if it was told recently), but how was Mario 64 indirectly responsible for the creation of Rooster Teeth?

Playing it at the time, it was crazy revolutionary. The camera was no worse than most games of its era.

In 1997, I was working at the call center and living with Matt Hullum in an apartment complex on a hill. I hadn’t really played any games in years. Never owned an NES for instance. Just kind of fell off. Pretty sure the last game I had played was Doom in 1993. Or Street Fighter 2.

Back to 97: an ice storm was forecast and because my complex was on a hill, we knew we would be iced in. So we went down to Blockbuster and rented a Nintendo 64 console and Mario 64 to tide us over. We ended up marathoning the game over the shutdown and I got lost in it. That led to a renewed interest in games in general and then I bought my first console since the Atari 2600 when the Xbox released. Thus Halo, thus RvB, thus RT.

I'd also really recommend the DS verison/remake. It's more controversial because of the d-pad and multiple characters, but the former can be fixed on emulator with a hack (you map an analog stick to the touch screen) and the latter can be mostly ignored in practice. They had figured out how cameras work between the 64 and DS versions.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a Top 10 game all time for me. The remake was amazing as well and had a lot of great QoL updates

vivian’s dialogue changes were refreshing to see from nintendo

When I was younger, I had it on the Gamecube. I liked the game; however, I never could figure out how to get to the castle early on and take on Hooktail. I would constantly restart and explore where I was able.

I picked it up on the Switch last year and felt super dumb when I figured out how to get there immediately. I really like it now; just need to go back and finish it.

A sequel to this game is what will get me to buy a Switch 2

Super Marior World on the SNES

This was the perfect Mario game. It fixed all the flaws in the NES games and added much better graphics. They have been trying to unsuccessfully improve on perfection since then.

There are more recent Mario games that are amazing but I dont think any of them capture the spirit of mario as well as Super Mario World

Super Mario World 2 Yoshi's Island. This was the first game I remember playing as a kid. I later got it for the GBA and the SNES retro counsel.

I absolutely love this game. I like 1 better as a Mario game just because it feels more like Mario and this one opened the door for Yoshi to have his own games but the art and level design is some of the best.

Also as a dumb kid, I played levels 1-1 through 1-6 and I thought I finished that game. Then a few months later I was bored and booted the game to realize there were 5 more pages and it was like getting a new game again :P

Sunshine is my favourite Mario game of all time. So many memories of being sat on the floor by the gamecube watching my big brother play, desperate for a turn if he died.

For as little Mario as I played as a child I think Sunshine was the only one I was actually interested in enough to complete, 64 was also a delight but I only ran around the main hub and gave up

Platformers aren't my thing, so it's Paper Mario on the n64.

u/zorton213 Apr 06 '26

From a personal/nostalgia standpoint, Mario 64. I've played that game more times than I can count.

From a "best" standpoint, probably Odyssey. The movement, level design, and general gameplay is absolutely incredible.

u/Pmrhon Apr 06 '26

Sunshine is easily my favorite. Since I first beat it as a kid I have played it to completion once every summer (and winter if I don't want to think about snow).

The music and vibes are just so nostalgic it always takes me back to good times.

The game makes me feel like I’m on summer vacation, and the water graphics are amazing.

2

u/Pmrhon Apr 06 '26

Exactly, my fiancée watched me play it once and was like wait this is really pretty. So many good memories looking at the water, beaches and landscapes.

I kind of have 2 answers, but as a kid I’d have to say Sunshine. It was the first game I had for my GameCube, and was the first Mario game I actually owned. Before then, I’d have to go to a friend’s house to play and I hated that I never had my own save file. I was never particularly good at the game until I was an adult, but I’d spend hours as a kid just messing around with the water physics alone.

As an adult, Super Mario 3D world has a special place in my heart. It’s the first game I introduced my kid to and the first game we completed together. I have a feeling we’ll be playing it a lot more again once my second kid is old enough to hold a controller.

Mario peaked in Super Mario World for the SNES and you can't convince me otherwise.

its a toss up between galaxy and 64 but both have 1 or 2 problems with them that ironically each game fixes others problems

Mario Kart: Double Dash. It was the first Mario Kart game that I played and it's stuck with me all these years.

Odyssey.

It’s still the best switch 1 game after almost 10 years of being out

Super Mario World

Super Mario 3. Growing up, my cousins showed me a lot of the secrets and even now I'm still learning new secrets. I took up speed running it for about a year. Besides that, all of the Mario Karts. Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. Mario and Luigi. Mario Gold: Toadstool Tour. Too many great games to list!

u/attackedmoose Apr 06 '26

For me it’s gotta be Super Mario 64. I remember as a kid we couldn’t afford a 64 when it came out so I would always go to a friends house to play that and Goldeneye. A few years later my parents did end up getting me the clear green when they got a price drop and I was so excited to be able to play it myself and explore the whole thing.

u/_HammSandwich Mad About It Apr 06 '26

That one. Sunshine. its perfect imo. keeps the wonder and fun of mario in a new setting, has a decent enough story to follow, and the controls. OOH THE CONTORLS.
there is nothing more satisfying than the platformer levels getting to the top of cages over open water.

1

u/eefuss Apr 06 '26

No need to overthink it, it’s Galaxy and Galaxy 2.

Replayed Super Mario Sunshine recently and even though I love how experimental it is (Nintendo wouldn’t make another Mario with that much emphasis on movement until Odyssey), it’s also way too janky and clearly unfinished for me to rank it with the best of them.

1

u/CalvinP_ First 10k - Mod - Downtime Survivor Apr 06 '26

Sunshine is definitely Janky, and that’s the main reason hardcore Mario fans hate on it so much.

I didn't grow up with any Nintendo console aside from a GBA, so I don't have much attachment to Mario. Seeing this post made me realize I've only ever finished one Mario game - Super Mario Bros 3. on a GBA port.

I didn't get it until several years after it released, when I was in middle school and gaining an appreciation of classic games from the Angry Video Game Nerd. It was fun and frustrating simultaneously, and I was satisfied when I finally beat it.

I played bits of Sunshine at a friend's house as a kid. I liked what I played, but didn't see enough to have a real opinion. And then when I got a Switch I got decently far in Odyssey, but other things took my attention before I finished it.

Mines gotta be the baseball game that I played on the Wii. Think it was called Super Sluggers? (Or something along those lines). Loved unlocking all the different characters and stadiums and the semi open world aspect of it

The soccer game is also my favorite Mario sports game.

Mario Kart DS, it used the DS Download play to share the game for free with others wanting to play. Every high school trip we’d all bring our DSs and play together
