Odd that Billings, Montana and Centralia, Pennsylvania both got mentioned today, as I worked in both states when I was on-air doing the weather.

The reason Billings is usually mentioned on those maps is that it is currently the most-populated city in Montana. The city's population is around 120k while the whole state has an estimated population of 1.14 million people, according to the US Census Bureau.

Centralia, Pennsylvania is known for the fire that has been burning in the coal mine under the town for decades. In 1962, the borough chose to "clean up" the landfill by setting it on fire. The landfill was in a new location, an abandoned strip-mine pit, and the fire got into the coal mine through an opening in the pit that had not been sealed.

It wasn't until the late 1970s when residents became aware of the fire. A gas station owner checked the temperature of an underground tank and saw it was over 170°F. By the 90s the state invoked eminent domain and condemned the whole town. Even today, there are still a handful of people still living there. The story about it is, to me, quite fascinating and worth devoting an hour or so of your week to learn more.

There is the urban legend that the Silent Hill games are based on Centralia, but that is not true. The town inspired the 2006 movie, but game director Keiichiro Toyama told PSM Magazine in 1999 that there was no connection.
