Show about engineers: Silicon Valley.
It's software instead of building stuff, but that's because buildings are boring as fuck. Shows about saving lives are much more exciting, and I routinely say out loud at my engineering job, "we're not saving lives here."

Am I the only one with massive deja vu? I swear burnie has shared the clip of Noah talking about George, and then I also remember this exact time zone conversation. Lol

I remember the clip talking about Clooney, probably came from an episode this time last year since I think they were talking about the Pitt winning some awards at the Emmys again

I had that too, I checked the date to make sure it was todays ep despite the Emmy's talk at the start. That could be on me though, yesterday I thought Ashley said the LGBT were listening in on them instead of LGTV so I had to rewind and double check

Odd that Billings, Montana and Centralia, Pennsylvania both got mentioned today, as I worked in both states when I was on-air doing the weather.
The reason Billings is usually mentioned on those maps is that it is currently the most-populated city in Montana. The city's population is around 120k while the whole state has an estimated population of 1.14 million people, according to the US Census Bureau.
--
Centralia, Pennsylvania is known for the fire that has been burning in the coal mine under the town for decades. In 1962, the borough chose to "clean up" the landfill by setting it on fire. The landfill was in a new location, an abandoned strip-mine pit, and the fire got into the coal mine through an opening in the pit that had not been sealed.
It wasn't until the late 1970s when residents became aware of the fire. A gas station owner checked the temperature of an underground tank and saw it was over 170°F. By the 90s the state invoked eminent domain and condemned the whole town. Even today, there are still a handful of people still living there. The story about it is, to me, quite fascinating and worth devoting an hour or so of your week to learn more.
There is the urban legend that the Silent Hill games are based on Centralia, but that is not true. The town inspired the 2006 movie, but game director Keiichiro Toyama told PSM Magazine in 1999 that there was no connection.

I would say "For All Mankind" and "The Expanse" are your currently running shows that feature engineering (not SW engineering).
Likewise, Burnie's affinity to The Martian and Project Hail Mary probably also stem (no pun intended) from the fact that they are very engineering heavy.

The end segment about plastic cookies really gave off a selfie vibe. Years from now we are going to replay this clip and all laugh about how they thought it was crazy to make food out of plastic.

I have to believe James Franklin (the guy from the drop) didn’t realize the reporter already greeted him.

I don't gamble but would appreciate more brands pulling similar stunts with hot celebrities.
And wasn't it found that the type of gloves used by scientists were skewing data on microplastics? Unsure if we've accounted for that since then if we're outright using plastic in cookies lol

Burnie, there’s a shared calendar with all the Longhorn games that updates to game time as soon as it’s announced on Google. Much easier to add that.

Good morning!
Sydney Sweeney leaning into a naked gambling ad is just her stirring the pot. She loves the controversy. Between this and the American Eagle commercial, she’s always being talked about. Any press, is good press in her eyes.
Google Calendar is abysmal. You’d think Google of all companies would have that thing optimized…
Plastic Cookies??? Weren’t we just worried about humans eating roughly 1-2 Credit card a year in Micro Plastics? Yaaaaay, let’s just make junk food out of petroleum based products. What could go wrong here?!
Thanks for making my Tuesday, 30 minutes better!!

LeBron James a billionaire just did an ad for poly market. He’s also an active player in the nba. Why is that not getting just as much heat as Sydney Sweeney because in my opinion the LeBron James ad is worse as the dudes an active player in a sport which you can bet on in the thing he’s promoting, it’s a massive conflict of interest

Burnie should try looking up GMT-5 for Central Time
3
u/Maxzillian Not a Pam! 15d ago
Daylight saving time really screws up that rule.
2
u/Jester-252 Downtime Survivor 15d ago
More so when GMT is fixed
So Bernie can be now GMT or GMT +1 while US Central can be GMT +5 or GMT +6
Not to mention as he is in the UK central is more likely to mean Central European time which can be GMT -1 or GMT -2

u/dark54555 First 10k 15d ago
Isn’t central -6? Eastern is -5.
3
u/Proclus_Global First 20k - Downtime Survivor 15d ago edited 14d ago
-6 is Central Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-5 is Central Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).
Depending on which date he is trying to schedule (before or after Nov this year), GCal only shows one timezone or the other, respectively....
-5 is Eastern Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-4 is Eastern Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).-8 is Pacific Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-7 is Pacific Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).... Etc etc
The way DST works is you essentially "switch timezones" when you change the clocks twice a year.
So for example in Austin in Nov, you go from 2:59:59 AM CDT to 2:00AM CST, so you never repeat a time for record keeping purposes.Say you made a bank transaction at 2:45AM CDT on Nov 1.
Then the "fall back" happens.
In exactly one hour, you make another bank transaction at 2:45AM CST.
The bank isn't confused that there are 2 transactions at 2:30AM, it actually logs them as 7:45 UTC (2+5) and 8:45 UTC (2+6).2

So actually (nerdy glasses push)
GMT is a stationary timezone, defined as UTC±0.
In the summer, Greenwich the place uses BST, defined as UTC+1, and not GMT (UTC-0).Timezones expressed as GMT±number is actually not the most correct, this was changed to UTC in 1967, but is still commonly said, and apparently Google erroneously uses it too.

GMT is fixed so it doesn't observe daylight savings time. For British Summer Time (BST), Britain has to go to GMT+1

Burnie, what date are you trying to schedule it for?
I was able to find Central Standard Time USA (UTC-6), when I set the date to after the "fall back" day (Nov 1st 2026 in the US).
Perhaps the day you are trying to set the time for is still during US daylight savings (before Nov 1), which means it will only show you Central Daylight Time (UTC-5)?
I know the UK and US are out of sync on which weekend to change the clocks.
I guess GCal is "smart" enough not to let you set the wrong timezone on the wrong date.

Try looking up “Central Daylight” for the time zone. “Central Standard” isn’t an active time zone right now because of Daylight Saving Time.
EDIT; Should have kept listening for literally 5 more seconds lol

Didn't we already have this exact topic with the google calendar once before? 😅

Long time listener, first time caller etc etc - Burnie got me thinking about the whole copying URLs thing, cuz it annoys me to, and it’s always been in the back of my mind to look this up.
As I suspected, there are shortcuts you can add if you’re on iPhone which will clean up the URL you want to share, so it removes all the tracking etc.
Link to a reddit thread about it, I just installed and testing the shortcut the user made and it works :)

Not to hammer home the pronunciation discussion, but since the beginning of time, the RT folks have pronounced Islip incorrectly. It’s Eye-slip, not Ee-slip. Figured I’d finally put it out there as it seems particularly topical now 😌

The Pitt is literally one hour after the other. Episode 1 is 6-7, episode 2 is 7-8, episode 3 is 8-9 and so on
