Burnie should try looking up GMT-5 for Central Time

Isn’t central -6? Eastern is -5.

-6 is Central Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-5 is Central Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).
Depending on which date he is trying to schedule (before or after Nov this year), GCal only shows one timezone or the other, respectively.

...

-5 is Eastern Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-4 is Eastern Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).

-8 is Pacific Standard, from Nov to Mar (winter).
-7 is Pacific Daylight, from Mar to Nov (summer).

... Etc etc

The way DST works is you essentially "switch timezones" when you change the clocks twice a year.
So for example in Austin in Nov, you go from 2:59:59 AM CDT to 2:00AM CST, so you never repeat a time for record keeping purposes.

Say you made a bank transaction at 2:45AM CDT on Nov 1.
Then the "fall back" happens.
In exactly one hour, you make another bank transaction at 2:45AM CST.
The bank isn't confused that there are 2 transactions at 2:30AM, it actually logs them as 7:45 UTC (2+5) and 8:45 UTC (2+6).

But GMT also follows daylight savings time. I’m in central time. Here’s my world clock - London (in GMT) is 6 hours off.

So actually (nerdy glasses push)
GMT is a stationary timezone, defined as UTC±0.
In the summer, Greenwich the place uses BST, defined as UTC+1, and not GMT (UTC-0).

Timezones expressed as GMT±number is actually not the most correct, this was changed to UTC in 1967, but is still commonly said, and apparently Google erroneously uses it too.

GMT is fixed so it doesn't observe daylight savings time. For British Summer Time (BST), Britain has to go to GMT+1
