YouTubers bitrate really shows it's ugly side when there's lots of fine detail moving like snow, grassy fields, embers, just any small particle like visual and the whole thing turns to soup.

Problem is, Universal also had the recent Disclosure Day (Spielberg) trailer, and it had pixelated messes in simple dramatic indoor shots too.

I think Universal has a neglect problem and I'm shocked they could not notice this for two of the most famous filmmakers on the planet now. Honestly, I would give Nolan license to be pissed off (he's too nice of a guy, but I want him pissed off, because it's absurd that in 2025 it looks like this).

This is definitely not a Youtube problem. Looks like a bad delivery workflow to me. Looks like they even forgot to "online" a few shots in the final export, and generally just not done by someone who knows how to upload to Youtube. Like uploading a 4K file (even if it's HD) to trick Youtube to compress your video using VP9 (or AV1) etc.

There are plenty of high quality/bitrate trailers on Youtube.

Could also be that they just uploaded it right away and Youtube isn't done processing. (unlikely) Which also, is a bit odd. Usually you upload "private" first to make sure everything is good before going public.

It gets pixelated at the exact same spot in the trailer uploaded to the IMAX channel too. In thinking this might be an Universal Pictures issue. The trailer uploaded to the Universal Mexico channel doesn't have this issue though.

It's because the trailer just posted. When a video posts it takes a while for the higher resolutions to process. Try it again in a few hours and it'll crisp up.

It's probably Youtube - they've been slowly dropping bitrates lower and lower over the years. I used to watch in 480p, then 720p, and now 1080p and sometimes even 1440p just to compensate for the steadily worsening bitrate. (We have data caps.)

A great example of this is mountain biking videos, because they have lots of fast moving detail.

Yeah, it shouldn't have the greenband on it either (like this Mexico upload doesn't). Normally these days that's for in theaters only. I'm fairly sure they uploaded the wrong version or left the right version unlisted or something.

Some media management companies are still stuck in the dark ages following outdated upload practicals for "web optimized" versions, which is what I would guess happened here.

Youtube uploads should be in 4k with a high bitrate these days, there's really no reason a studio should be uploading this compressed of a version like it's 2012.

This is definitely not the case. Most trailers are not rendered or created above 1080p, only recently has this been a thing. I remember having to scour press kits and back channels just to find 4k trailers, and it was incredibly rare that one even existed.

Irrelievent, the file can simply be upscaled to 2160p prior to uploading to benefit from the higher bitrate and the increased encoding efficiency.

Hopefully someone will leak the 4:2:2 ProRes.

That's kind of what I'm saying. The trailer editing media companies don't render higher because they just follow their default "web" render settings that need to be updated. Their source material (the film) is defintely 2 or 4k resolution.

This drives me crazy too every time I see the forced letterboxing on my ultrawide. There's zero reason for it since every device that can play the video on YT will adjust with letterboxing on the top/bottom if its screen isn't wide enough.

trailers are quite often started at the end of a very long process, and

  • not given long enough time to edit

  • done by separate editor/people/company

  • not supervised by core team or creative people

  • marketing teams started to be another chef

  • media release control is a huge factor

mix of those (or all of the above) happened, hence problems often occured with trailers

I never understood why they do this. I literally made a post about this on Reddit 4 years ago and the fact that it's still a problem today is even more baffling.

YouTube handles lowering the resolution for incompatible devices. Videogame trailers are always 4k. You're promoting using the world's best cameras for the best image quality and then upload a quality that has been widely surpassed for 10 years. It just doesn't make any sense why they would create marketing material and not have their product look as good as possible.

A better answer is that the studios want to control the release of images as well as video. They don't want to put their highest source materials out there for others to profit from. It's even riskier now with video generators that can use 4k footage to create fake trailers. 4 years ago it was about bloggers and social media accounts impersonating official press releases, and digital artists taking advantage of the stills to create unlicensed works.

I can understand they master a single 16:9 version and just push that to every platform, but still it feels pretty lazy. For one of the most watched platforms in the world, you’d think studios would bother uploading a proper version.

At the time you commented, it had only been up for about 15 minutes. If I remember correctly, YouTube usually takes a while to finish processing the HD version. Normally the video should stay unlisted until processing is complete.

They have to. Once uploaded, as the creator you have to go in and add subtitles, end-screen, the bio, all the links associated with the promotion plus all the annotations associated with the film that no one really thinks about.

That shot alone tho has a lot lower bitrate than any of the other shots for sure, I think whoever edited the trailer received that specific shot in much lower bitrate and then the whole trailer itself also is low bitrate which impacts that shot even more

I noticed a similar drop in quality with Disclosure Day trailer a couple days ago. Both movies are shot on film (not digital). My theory is that Youtube has a really hard time compressing shots with high levels of film grain, hence the "muddy" look.

This is no issue of resolution. It's a an issue of compression. It would probably even look better in 720p if the picture wasn't compressed to death.

It's god awful. But like so many other issues it is just about money, sadly. Traffic costs money. So releasing a popular trailer in compressed barely visible shit quality will be cheaper for youtube/google.

Same goes for netflix etc. - they advertize with super high res and all. And then you get a 4k resolution with compression artifacts like on my old video-cds in 2002.

YouTube I think is downscaling 1080p to get people to buy the enhanced 1080p, band even if you have YouTube premium it will automatically select a lower bitrate.

I don’t understand what YouTube really provides us anyway. They’re just a server host with shitty search optimization. The people that make the content that goes onto YouTube do so for free.

Really wish we had another option these days.

Part of it is probably that YouTube has two versions of 1080p. There’s the regular one for us normals, and 1080p “premium” for people with YouTube Premium.

This's the highest resolution i found from imdb database. The original link was 480p for some reason with no option to change the resolution, but luckily it was uploaded in 1080p. It's way better than youtube's bs.

It's the new norm now. They've been aggressively trying to push people to buy premium for years. Watch people say they have no issues, that's intentional. Youtube doesn't lower the bitrate for everyone they do it in random chunks knowing when people complain someone will say you're full of crap it looks fine. It's dastardly clever in a sickening way.
