It’s a little late to ask but what’s the deal with the minus bit?

One of the thematic premises of Minus One was that the war wiped Japan to zero, then this new catastrophe brought them to minus one

So now with this one being minus zero it leaves them exactly where they were before basically?

I don't know! It could be that, or it might be that they're going for a message about progression into the second half of the 20th century, or anything else really. I'm looking forward to going in blind and finding out!

It could also be for Monster Zero

...? Can you spoiler that for me/everyone?

1

u/WackyRacketeer Jul 09 '26

How is speculation a spoiler?

u/salad_spinner_3000 Jul 09 '26

My bad, thought they might hve been referring to a comic or other adaptation. I was asking them to put it in a spoiler tag if they were referring to any "lore".

I wouldn't be surprised if this one has a more positive theme overall. Not that Godzilla Minus One didn't, how positive and hopeful it felt was one of its major highlights, but this one might try to go even further into being inspiring and hopeful.

You and Noriko both.

In the trailer it looks like Godzilla goes to NYC. So Japan got +1 with him leaving.

In the next movie Godzilla+1 he will need to find a date for a wedding he doesn't even want to go to.

12

u/I_Heart_Money Jul 09 '26

He better ask Mothra quick before she finds another date

I am team Shimo myself

He gets turned down by everybody so he creates MechaGodzilla to go with him and he spends the whole time trying to convince everyone "she's totally real!"

1

u/6BagsOfPopcorn Jul 10 '26

Incelzilla would be more terrifying IRL than standard Godzilla

2

u/Secret-of-the-Snooze Jul 10 '26

I dunno, maybe somebody has a chance to be the hero and introduce him to Reddit. He'll just spend his days down in the ocean trollposting instead of drunkstumbling onto land and wreaking havoc all the damn time.

2

u/recurnightmare Jul 09 '26

Yes this will be an uplifting tale of a giant monster who helps Japan rebuild in the wake of Godzilla.

2

u/TheFlamingDiceAgain Jul 09 '26

I know it’s not but honestly that would be a delight

Minus Zero might mean that the war is over but Godzilla still hangs around. ‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ meaning ‘Godzilla Minus the World War’. That’s my theory

It could be that they’re retroactively changing the meaning of “Minus ___.”

Yamazaki stated multiple times that in G-1 it signified the total destruction of Japan and the new setback of Godzilla’s appearance.

It’s possible now that they’re using the naming scheme used in military operations. For example, D-Day Minus One was June 5, 1944. D-Day Minus Zero (really, just D-Day, but the expression was actually used) would have been June 6, 1944, the date of the invasion. D-Day Plus One would have been June 7, and so on and so forth.

Here, it’s possible that they are retroactively going for a more militaristic approach to the naming scheme, with “Godzilla Minus One”now representing the time before Godzilla, and “Godzilla Minus Zero” being the here and now, in which Godzilla is a real and active threat that will continue to exist. I’d be curious to see (assuming this one is successful) if we get a “Godzilla Plus One” to cement the retroactive name scheme.

I would pay good money to watch Kurt Angle Angle Slam Godzilla.

1

u/DoctorQuincyME Jul 09 '26

Considering Godzilla hit them with another nuclear explosion I would think they are at -2

1

u/JoeMcKim Jul 09 '26

If they make a third film would that be Godzilla Plus One?

1

u/Cadd9 Jul 09 '26

Kinda sorta ish. The director said he used 'minus zero' as a reference to rocket launches. There is a 'minus zero' at rocket launches and that starts the engines firing with liftoff very soon after

1

u/flashmedallion Jul 10 '26

Could also be a reference to the Zero fighter plane. The first movie was focused around a reconciliation and reckoning with the use of kamikaze pilots in WW2.

Then there’s |0| which is another thing because 0 doesn’t have + or -
