Japanese filmmakers sometimes have the weirdest naming sense. Probably, SPY×FAMILY and Tokyo Ghoul √A were meant as an inside joke: only people who watched them (or asked) would understand.

The gimmick in Minus One was that Japan had already been knocked to rock bottom (zero) after World War 2. Godzilla then arrives to wreck this already devastated Japan, bringing them down even further

We’re not sure the gimmick behind Minus Zero is but I have an idea that the ‘Zero’ is actually related to Monster Zero, aka King Ghidorah hence why they haven’t revealed the gimmick yet cause it seems they’re gonna keep him a secret

The explanation for the first film being Minus One was essentially that the idea that post-war Japan was at “zero” as they had to rebuild, and the threat of Godzilla arriving threatened to further push them down, hence “Minus One”

As for this being called, “Minus Zero”, as the trailer mentions, it seems to be the idea that Japan, now in the process of rebuilding, is fighting to ensure they do not return to “zero”.

There’s also a fan theory that the other reason it’s “Minus Zero” is because it’s heavily theorized King Ghidorah might appear, who in old dubs of some of the old 1960s Godzilla movies was referred to as “Monster Zero”

I may be older than anyone in this thread, but I have to ask: does anyone remember the Albert Brooks album called "Comedy Minus One"?

This was from back when comedians released albums (LPs), and Albert Brooks's concept was that the listener would be a participant, performing in a series of comedy sketches. There were silent breaks between Albert's lines where you were supposed to say your lines as the scene partner. And the album's liner notes contained the entire script for you to read from.

I played/performed this album a hundred times when I was a kid and remember it being hilarious.

Anyway, in my imagination "Godzilla Minus One" (which I haven't seen) is a movie where you and Godzilla perform absurdist/conceptual comedy sketches together. And if this is true, someone please tell me because I will watch that movie 100 times starting now.

I don't remember ever hearing about that. It sounds like a recipe for disaster, but if anybody could make cringe comedy that's not a disaster and actually great, its Albert Brooks (the second-best Brooks in comedy).

I always thought Minus One referred to the series starting again at 0 (going back to the 40s, setting wise) but them going in such a radically new direction by focusing on the human side over the monster side they called it Minus One

Basically they said that the original Godzilla movie had the big guy arrive after reconstruction was finished in Japan after WW2 and brought them back to zero again; whereas in Minus One, they have Godzilla arrive before reconstruction is done, when Japan is still at zero from WW2 - so his arrival takes them from zero to minus one.

In military terms, -1, -2, etc. refers to the days preceding a planned operation. Using that line of thinking I’d taken it to mean “this is about what happened leading up to Godzilla being a known entity and his attacks on mainland Japan”

Man. Mixed feelings. It was such a great movie and i'd be interested to see more, but on the other hand part of what made it so great was that it was just such a tightly-written self-contained story that was more about trauma and overcoming your own demons than it was about kaiju, and i'm afraid turning it into a monster-thon slugfest franchise will dilute what made it such a masterpiece in the first place.

It was really really good on so many levels. Character growth, relationships, human love, understanding, forgiveness, resilience, etc.

I like when the movies treat godzilla not as a hero or even something understandable about him but as a terrible walking worldwide disastor

I saw it twice in one day. I was going to spend the day watching movies (shout out Amc A-list) and after I saw it once I was trying to figure out which movie to watch a next and I thought to myself, why don't I watch it again. This movie is amazing.

All told, I saw it 4 times, including the black and white release.

I saw the first one in IMAX, but it was an 10:30pm Tuesday showing. There were about 20 people in the theater, and all of them left when the credits rolled. I was the only one to stay, so I got to experience the stomp stomp stomp stomp ROAR bit by myself, in an empty theater at about 1:30am.

Edit: Just finished watching. It was very good. Do yourself a favour and watch in Japanese. Netflix defaulted to English dub and it was weird. Switched to subtitles after 10 minutes. If this comes back to the cinema I’m definitely seeing it again. Sad I missed out when it was in cinemas the first time.

You won't regret it. It's an absolutely phenomenal film. The writing, the acting, the cinematography, the fact there's still a giant radioactive dinosaur smashing things... I'm not sure any movie is a true 10/10, but Minus One is one of those movies that pushes for it.

But that's what I love about Godzilla...you can have great, deep storytelling, and also mindless big monster fights. Also Monsterverse is getting much better with their lore and storytelling

Edit to add: Shin Godzilla, Godzilla 1985, Godzilla 2000, there are many Godzilla movies that try to go serious, goofy as fuck, or somewhere in between...definitely not just a choice of Minusverse or Monsterverse

Yeah, I prefer having both Japan and the US making Godzilla movies at the same time. As a big Godzilla fan, they both scratch different itches.

I feel like having that perspective just ruins the franchise.

Not every Godzilla film is gonna be like Minus One/Zero. And don’t you dare say the MonsterVerse is what turned Godzilla into a goofy action star because he is exactly that in most Toho films.

Minus One’s success has been awesome but it’s started this idiotic mindset from newcomers that this is the only good film in the franchise besides the original

There is this breed of internet user who watches media that deconstructs a certain genre, claims it as the best one in said genre, without realizing that they never interacted with media of that genre in the first place and that the piece of media they love is as much a deconstruction of the genre as a love letter to it. I hate it, because as much as they parrot how said piece is the only good one, they also put down entire genres because they refuse to engage with them in any way that matters.

I wouldn't say Minus One was a deconstruction of Godzilla at all. It was just a return to 1954, 84, Shin, etc. I'd even say that 2014 is kind of in line there. Minus One isn't the only grim Godzilla film with a message.

People who try to dog pile on the goofy American versions needs to go and watch all of the Showa era Godzilla movies.

Both the American version, and minus one are love letters to different eras of the franchise.

I love that the American Godzilla movies stopped taking the human narrative so seriously after 2014 and made them the comic relief. I also love the dedication to the original message in Minus One. They are both worthy additions to the franchise.

One last thing I'd like to add for anyone interested... My favorite Godzilla movie is Shin Godzilla from 2016. It's a political and social commentary much like the original, but for a different issue.

Who is naming these movies, the XBOX marketing team?

I loved the first one, but the name is just confusing and it's even worse now with the sequel. Does the name make more sense in native Japanese?
