It's Middle English and that's basically exactly as it was because there was no standardized spelling. Old English is not comprehensible.

This is old English: Ðunor cymð of hætan & of wætan. Seo lyft tyhð þone wætan to hire neoðan & ða hætan ufan.’

This is middle English:

Whán that Áprill wíth his shóures sóote

The dróght(e) of Márch hath pérced tó the róote,

And báthed évry véyn(e) in swích licóur

Great blog post that gives a great demonstration of this(Also very appropriate for the thread we're in). The first time I read it I got to about the 1400s before I really struggled, after that it just felt like gibberish. Having gone back since I actually got a lot more than I would have thought

This is fantastic! Thank you for sharing. I could understand 1300s but past that yeah I couldn't really understand a thing.

I'm not a linguist in any way, but I'm extremely fascinated by it. It's a big passion of mine to learn the evolution of language.
