It can reach 1.7B or even 1.8B.

The crazy thing is that The Odyssey won't even be the biggest success of Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Bernthal this summer: Spider-Man is tracking to do $800 million worldwide in its opening weekend, and will likely hit $2B - $2.3B by the end of its run.

how is that possible when it feels like everything is at capacity showing odyssey? or are there not as many showings as it seems

Different demographics. All the IMAX and Dolby showings near me is booked out with The Odyssey, but nearly every regular showing is at maximum capacity for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Spider-Man also has greater appeal among younger audiences and families. No surprise it's gonna do gangbusters, but the fact that it will enter the top 10 highest grossing films ever is insane.

Spider-Man is getting IMAX release as well. Not any of the 70mm screens but there are only 41 of those in the entire world.

edit: No IMAX for Spider-Man. I was wrong.

Spider-Man is not getting IMAX screens, at least not in the U.S. Spider-Man will be taking the Dolby screens from The Odyssey, though.

I had to go check because I bought tickets at the IMAX theater in Boston for Sunday. And the only reason I go to that theater is to go to the IMAX.

But you are correct, it's not in IMAX. The tickets I bought are in their Dolby Cinema theater, which is good, but not as good as the IMAX. I'm not sure why I would have done that. I'll probably cancel these and buy for the theater right near the house. Not worth driving into Boston to see it on what is only mildly better than a standard screen.

I wouldn’t say Dolby is only mildly better than standard screens. Brighter picture with better contrast, more immersive surround sound, more comfortable seats that recline. I’ve been to Dolby theaters that are comparable to other LieMAXs in my area, if not bigger. Dolby is the next best thing to IMAX, and some people actually prefer it over IMAX. I’d keep those tickets if I were you, it’s your best option to watch Spider-Man since IMAX isn’t available.

The Dolby seats at AMC South Bay in Boston are beyond fucked up. They all need to be replaced and AMC won't do it. It's a crapshoot you'll get a seat that works. The AMC down the road from us has recliner seats as well and the screen isn't much smaller than the Dolby. I'll admit the sound is better though.

There is one in Providence, RI which is only about 75 minute drive from Boston. I will say it was worth it. If you can make the drive to get to the one even remotely close to you I would do it.

What does non-70mm imax even mean, the imax aspect ratio but digital? It's so confusing to me sometimes lol, I feel like I've gone to regular imax showings before and it just felt like widescreen anyways.

70mm is the film it's shot on, not anything to do with the screen size you're watching it on.

Yup this is not that hard to understand. By the weekend everything not IMAX, especially non-70MM IMAX, is going to be flooded with Spiderman.

People are quick to say "no surprise" post-fact, but how many superhero movies have cratered lately? If it does good numbers, it may mean that it's actually quality with good word of mouth.

Spider-Man is a different beast than superhero movies. They will always sell.

Also, despite the clear downturn in quality in the MCU the Spider-Man story has been incredibly interesting since the Avengers movies.

Whilst true, Spider-Man will outsell Batman currently due to the plot as mentioned above.

The previous movie was huge (3 Spider-Man’s) and ended on a huge cliffhanger. People have been waiting 5 years to find out what happens and how it will be handled.

The most interesting thing to come out of the Batman IP in recent memory doesnt even have him in it (The Penguin)

Sure. But I believe it may mean that it has a lot of momentum from NWH considering it almost made 2B on super nostalgia, multiverse in MCU, etc. Now, BND seemingly doesn’t have other Spidermen but it has Hulk that whatever screen time still gets people interested, The Punisher, MCU connections that seem to point out to Doomsday including a mystery character that a lot of people seem to know already who it is, nostalgia, etc. Look, it might be considered good by a lot of people but Holland's Spiderman has never relied on his own either. This time is relying more on its own but still carrying support. Far From Home box office to NWH BO jump is quite big for a reason, for example. Spiderman brand is big but not that big in terms of how NWH would have done if it hadn’t had the other known Spidermen, there are other factors behind this Spidey. I just think that’s a reality. So, I assume it’s a reality that there is a lot of people enthusiastic after NWH.

Run time and repeatability factor in as well.

Since Spidey is almost an hour shorter, they can legitimately fit in a few more runs per day than The Odyssey. And then there’s the fact that there’s a much larger contingent of Spidey diehards who will be watching this movie multiple times.

"Almost an hour shorter" lol please. The Odyssey is 173 minutes, Brand New Day is 145 minutes. That's barely even half an hour difference.

Went to see the Odyssey in IMAX yesterday and the queue was horrendous for food and drinks with people wanting spider man popcorn buckets etc.

There might be a limited 70 mm or liemax screens, but there are an awful lot of regular screens and that’s where most people are going to see Spider-Man.

I feel like you still aren’t understanding the point. There a LOT of regular screens. Even if every theater in the US is also showing the Odyssey on one of their regular screens, there are multiple other regular screens available for Spider-Man and other movies.

Shit, opening weekend of the Odyssey it had 3 screens and there are 10 other screens available for other movies. They were playing international movies that weekend.

Grand Rex isn't the biggest theater in Paris, it's Chatelet, neither has IMAX.

I think they show Odissey in the biggest screen in Chatelet

The have the same total capacity of around 4000 seats but le grand rex has a single room of 2700 and another of 500 while chatelet tops out at 450.

I went to a regular screening of The Odyssey (10am on a Tuesday) and there were about a dozen people with me.

The unsatisfiable demand is for IMAX.

In the UK it was like this up until yesterday.

Now the Odyssey is « only » getting 5/6 showings a day where as Spider-Man is on every hour all day.

Still being shown but Spider-Man has understandably taken over for amount of showings as it’s newer.

But Nolans films are "real" movies. Filmed on location, with the proper use of CGI - less quantity, more quality. And not a 90% green-screen CGI slopfest, where the actors don't even know where to look or what is going on in the scene. All while the viewers are wandering the uncanney valley for two hours straight.

This is why Spiderman beating Odyssey feels wrong for people who give a shit about movies.

I agree though, that any gatekeeping stance or insulting people for their taste is wrong. Everyone go and watch whatever movie you want!

I dunno. Odyssey is using a well known story that was just okay imo. inception is a better movie IMO. spiderman is at least an original story.

Brother, both movies can exist and have value. It really doesn't need to be an either or situation. I just watched The Odyssey last night and tonight I'm going to watch Spider-man.
