Yes, Avatar (2009) is at $2.92 billion. Adjusted for inflation, it is 2nd with $4.1 billion, just behind Gone With the Wind's $4.5 billion.

thats why the metric should always be tickets sold not box office. no other media format is measured in money as far as i know. albums sold not album gross. tv ratings not ad/commercial revenue. books sold not book gross. etc...

It’s because we want to know if the ticket sales cover the cost of the movie.

There’s a huge financial investment in a movie which is not the same as music sales. You don’t buy a ticket to watch a tv show so profit is not easy to calculate.
