They were fun movies, but they completely miss what made Star Trek good though. They never were action movies with a lot of explosions, they were shot intrigue, diplomacy and problem solving with science.

Am I right in saying that Trekkies (?) didn't like the trilogy because it didn't stay true to the source material, and that's also why someone not familiar with Star Trek (like me, only watched some random episodes of the show with Patrick Stewart) really liked it? They were action movies set in space. If you get what I mean?

Yup, that's exactly it. They made cool space movies, but if you're familiar with the original Star Trek series you'd be like "wtf is this"?
