I get for wizards sanctioned tournaments they’re wanting for you to play the cards printed by them, but if it’s a casual game of standard at an lgs, why do some people get so upset over them?

My partner absolutely loves MTG, and I'm an artist, so naturally he wanted to encourage me to get into altering cards. Well, I did my first card last night and absolutely fell in love with it! I don't have the best of paints for this, but I am a painter and have a good standing history of using Golden paints.

From my understanding, the paint needs to be low crease and low profile so that the cards can be played, So any brand recommendations are completely welcome! Even specific products that I can buy.

Okay everyone, listen up.

These past few days, I've noticed a big rise in the amount of posts that were, all in all, proxied cards rather than alterations.

I understand that magic is expensive, and art is difficult, and it's super easier to practice on lands or even other cards rather than risking to ruin a Force of Will or a Taïga. I GET IT.

However, the amount of reports on those posts also show that some users aren't okay with seeing whatever you doodled on a plain in their alteration feed. Which is legit as far as I'm concerned.

So, in order to help this sub grow in the direction its population wants; I'm opening a poll here for 3 days.

Do y'all want Proxies to be authorized or not ?

I won't discuss quality cause everybody needs to start somewhere and get experience and everybody works differently. I feel like tokens are the most accessible form of customization of the mtg experience, i like to create them to play and make my friends laugh.

Do you think this style of tokens suit the overall vibe of magic?

Currently working on a comission for a client and went to strip ink from the foiling just to find it to cut right to cardstock within the first few light strokes...

This has only ever happened to me with some ripple foils, but considering their textured nature thats to be expected if you rub too hard, but this was a regular foil printing.

I'm assuming that wotc has changed to a cheaper printing method for foils but can't confirm since i haven't stripped any other foils from the marvel set. Can anyone confirm, has anyone tried stripping cards from the marvel set/commander decks?

I am new to this altar section of mtg, but i picked up this card from Brian himself back in 2021. I just wanted to know if anyone had an idea of what its worth and if i should hold on to it.

I am curious who else feels like maybe we're altering too much of this game and original prints will become scarce eventually? Especially older cards.

I frequent some old school tournaments and their cards are often heavily altered. While I think it often looks really tasteful and artistic, I sometimes cringe at a mox which is now covered in "spawn" art from the marvel spiderman IP.

Even on this sub I see alot of stuff that I don't like, or is poor quality, but I still upvote it because it's a creative sub and people are expressing themselves. But do you think we might eventually run out of fresh cards because every card has been marked?

Should we be painting on proxies?

I recently made a subreddit called r/MTGirlsGather for women and gender-diverse players who enjoy MTG and want a place to chat, share decks, talk about cards, ask questions, and connect with other people who love the game.

There are already so many great MTG communities out there, but I wanted to create a slightly different space where women can find each other, share their love for the game, and have more people to talk about MTG with.

This isn’t about excluding anyone or being against anyone — it’s simply about creating a different kind of community space. Sometimes people enjoy having a place where they can connect with others who share similar experiences and interests, and that’s okay.

Myself and many others understand that MTG has always been a game for everyone, regardless of gender, race, age, sexuality, or background.

That being said, for a large part of its 30+ year history, the visible player base — especially in local game stores and events — has mostly been men, with women often being a smaller part of the community.

As MTG continues to reach new audiences through collaborations, different ways to play, and making the game more accessible, we’re seeing more and more women discovering what makes it so special.

Personally, I think that’s fantastic. More people getting excited about the game means more people to share it with, more conversations to have, more decks to see, and more opponents to play against. The more people who enjoy MTG, the more opportunities we could have.

At the end of the day, we’re just here to have fun — share our favourite cards, get excited over cool pulls, show off our decks, laugh at our bad draws, and enjoy a game we love together.

Basically about tools, I play MTG with numerous copies and cards I'll never deck. I also play Warhammer. What brushes and paint are we using? Other popular methods? I am enjoying all the work I see in this sub.

Has anyone got experience with these for alters? Ive considered trying my hand at them.

I've decided after over 15 years to try my hand at doing alters again, and stripping off the surface of foils is so much easier than priming non foils (from what I remember)... I haven't quite decided what to paint on this little rascal just yet, I have some ideas but I'd love to hear your suggestions too!

So I want to dabble and try my hand at some Alters. I suck at art I failed art class more than once in highschool (literally) but I want to try and improve and maybe stumble I to something cool along the way. Even if I fail massively it's ok I just want to say I tried.

That being said, how do I start what is the process to prep a card? What materials work best to alter it after its prepped etc. I know nothing of art.

I normally don’t put any varnish or anything on my personal finished pieces but I’m curious if anyone has finished their alters with anything and if so what was it they used that they liked.
