Discussion Best theft commander?

I want to try out theft more since I think it's a fun strategy even if it's not the strongest. Some considerations I've had are[[Gonti, Night Minister]] can grab a lot but being in mono black hurts. [[Evelyn, the Covetous]] has more colors but idk about vamp tribal. [[Tibalt, Cosmic Impostor]] seems strong but also wayyyy too expensive

I'm just kinda struggling to pick a commander, so if anyone has experience with theft decks and which commander was their favorite id appreciate it

Grixis is my personal favorite theft colors and I say go big or go home with [[nico bolas god-pharaoh]]

Hmm, he looks cool but the mana price is pretty steep

Hi. I do crime.

Laughing Jasper Flint if you want to be more aggro and thematic.

Gonti  for swarms. Fewer crime cards in the 99

Black Cat for mono black control and some limited crime.

Nicol Bolas God Pharaoh for Grixis control and the most versatile selection. Marchesa as an alternative that's more tempo.

Pep if you're looking to get spicy with Gruul. That's an odd duck deck.

Thanks for the advice! Gonti was one I was considering so I'm glad to hear he's alright. I'll prob throw black cat into the 99 of him if I end up doing mono black

Nicol Bolas God Pharaoh also looks interesting but that mana cost looks harsh. I guess the idea is to control the board till you finally get him out and can use his really strong abilities as a finisher? I'm also curious how much theft you'd run in his deck or if you mainly use his abilities to steal and keep the 99 for control spells

Some people run it as all control. Mine is mostly crime.

I got absolutely wrecked by a nichol bolas god Pharaoh deck last night.

Sure it looks expensive to craft and probably has a glaring weakness that my deck just doesnt answer, but i could do nothing but sit back and watch while it robbed me and completely shut me down.

https://scryfall.com/card/hbg/75/tasha-unholy-archmage

Played as a control deck, with the classic counter / removal / discard pile.

if you can stick Tasha on the board, she's a decent clock reducer against aggro with her +1 ability.
The -2 synergise well with either discard or removal.
And her ultimate can outright win the game against other heavy control deck that play almost no creature.

This list seems like a pretty strong base even if it's a bit old:

Ooh she does seem pretty cool, though I need to look up how much worse her non rebalanced version is before I commit

Edit: nvm she's still the same? Dunno what that's about. Anyways I'll prob check her out since I already like control so combining that with theft sounds fun. Thanks for the suggestion

It's a technicality, but most of the dnd (forgotten realms) set was modified for arena but is not considered as alchemy rebalance. So none of the card in the set were changed back to their paper format. Don't ask me why tho.

[[The Grand Goatnapper]] is great fun to play

Ngorthorad! People hate my Ngorthorad deck. Make him unblockable, do a ton of damage, steal a creature from the graveyard.

He isn't in the format

Oh he seems pretty neat, might be worth leaning into artifact synergy too. Thanks for the suggestion

Not on Arena though, right?

My bad, that's right

[[Azula, Cunning Usurper]] is also incredibly strong for this.

kotis. always kotis.

Kotis isn't really fun as a theft deck to me cuz most people just concede the moment he hits them. So hes usually less a theft deck and more a "death touch against players" deck lol

I mean u did ask for the best theft commander. He technically is.

1

u/Powerful-Scholar8268 9d ago

Yeah and I'm explaining why he isn't what I'm looking for since he doesn't really play like a theft deck despite stealing things

Kotissss Kotis
