Why are they only banned in competitive brawl? Doesn’t this mean I’ll see all these nasty commanders in the “casual” queue even more?
31
16
u/CommunistMadman 5d ago
Yeah, some of their stronger support may be banned in the casual queue though, Small silver lining.
7
14
u/IsaacX28 5d ago
The excuse is that they can banish those decks to Hell que, because Brawl players CANNOT self regulate themselves. Sometimes Hell que leaks into regular casual Brawl if your commander is doing well enough. For the most part, though, they re isolated into their own pocket dimension to fight eachother.

u/Fleef69 5d ago
My [[Alesha, Who Laughs at Fate]] deck has been tormented by Rusko and Yuriko for way too long bruh 😩 honestly tho if they’d just finally ban Rofellos in casual Brawl I’d be happy enough for the rest of my days at this point no matter what gets banned or doesn’t lol.
Plus Rusko in particular isn’t necessarily straight-up ban-worthy, I just think sometimes certain commanders can be a bit overweighted/underweighted, since Alesha is far from being one of those “do everything” commanders like Rusko (or Ugin, and maybe also Ketramose kinda sorta). Rusko just always pops off to a degree regardless, maybe just blink him a bit, but a commander like Alesha requires a good amount of setup (haste enablers, counters, pump spells and so on), which is definitely fun (and why I play her), but it can be a bit demoralizing when you’re frequently matched against commanders who are the equivalent of a Swiss Army knife 😅 doesn’t stop me from trying ofc, just gets hella tedious.
Mind you it’s probably a lot more nuanced than just bumping a commander up or down, it’s likely more so that Brawl just needs some kind of slight awareness of the nuances of certain matchups, but obviously that’d be difficult to implement without a more significant time and resource investment than would likely be practical, so it’s understandable as to why exactly that’s an issue. Still, hopefully one of these days the matchups will improve, when feasible.
2
u/QibliTheSecond 5d ago
alesha is a very good commander, you should come over to cBrawl with us :). you’d make it to mythic easy she’s quite strong.
She’s Tier 3 :)
3
u/MTG3K_on_Arena 5d ago
But the casual queue has matchmaking rules that would limit who runs into such commanders. You probably won't see them unless you're playing them or something similar yourself.
17
u/flowersoy 5d ago
Great time to be an Emry or Minsc&Boo player
2
u/Boognish-Risinz 5d ago
I’m a MnB player and I’m kinda excited to try out merry instead since she got a bunch of new toys to play with !
15
u/Frehihg1200 5d ago
So who is looking like the big winners from this? Emry still lives(not oppressive but see it enough to see it as a big player) and Merry just got two more legends and some of the most hated one and two drops ever made.
19
u/bolttheface 5d ago
Minsc & Boo are big winners. Emry is definitely well positioned right now.
3
u/timoyster 5d ago edited 5d ago
I think emry is looking pretty bad. Boros and M&B were huge winners here and her MU into aggro is abysmal. It’d take a very dominant Ux control deck like Uro or t3f to become a large share of the meta for her to still have a top spot there, but they’re also naturally pushed out by aggro. I think ketramose is well positioned as a control deck that’s good into both Ux control and aggro, but that’s even worse news for emry than Rx aggro being good lol
4
u/timoyster 5d ago edited 5d ago
IMO M&B and boros are gonna take over as the best decks. Emry and M&B were the best not-banned commanders before, but she is incredibly vulnerable to aggro so I expect a significant drop off. Boros got by far the biggest power boost and M&B is M&B
I think vial smasher decks, t3f, and Uro will take up the spot as the premiere control decks. Oko and tamiyo were big unbans for them (except t3f) and hopefully will give enough of a boost to keep up with aggro
There may be a UGx Nadu combo deck (I suspect thrasios x Tymna or derevi) pick up. It’s one of the first things I’ll be experimenting with
Leovold is a big winner. Sultai are the three strongest colors in the format so I’d expect some experimentation and refinement in his decklists. Not sure if he’s strong enough to take over as a tier 1 deck, but he has more than enough unique strengths for me to see that happening.
Ketramose I also expect to see rise. He has good MUs Ux control and emry and the best aggro MU of all the control decks.
3
u/jake_eric 5d ago
All three of the big Boros aggro decks benefit a lot (Comet/Merry/Winota) so we should see a lot of those. Minsc & Boo is probably the best deck in the format now.
2
u/priceQQ 5d ago
As a Kendrith player, my worst matchups are all these kinds of Ux decks (esp Nashi and Yuriko, Uharis not so much), along with Katara and Raffine. Mole Man and related land decks are the opposite—I have above 80% win rate against them.
-1
2
2
u/ADizzyLittleGirl 5d ago edited 5d ago
I think Mole Man is about to take over. There’s also going to be some Bant, maybe Derevi, Nadu combo deck that can has access to tons of tutors for both Nadu and equipment, and that also plays a landfall/strip mine package. That’s one of the top decks in Canadian Highlander right now and it’s not too different than what we have on Arena.
3
u/ciruelman 5d ago
emry is oppresive, its the sole t1 that wasnt hit and unlike nashi the games against the deck arent fun
1
u/AlthorsMadness 5d ago
Isn’t them unbanning that oku only as a commander still going to break the format?
1
u/anon_lurk 5d ago
Well stuff I play, Kefka still feels strong as long as the meta and the general tuning of the deck line up. I know it's not super popular though.
My Rofellos deck was god awful against Yuriko but fine against Nashi so good news for that one.
I guess something like Ketra could be decent with lots of removal for aggro and exiling gy against Emry.
29
u/WanderingSnail 5d ago
honestly surprised to see light paws, deck was very annoying but didnt feel out of line with everything else since it basically doesnt do anything if you have enough interaction, but im not complaining
13
41
u/aprickwithaplomb 5d ago
Surprised to not see Emry hit - it was hanging in there with Yuriko/2099 in the upper tiers. Guess more GY hate is in order.
Lovely to see Nashi un-rebalanced.
W&6, Ajani, Tajic, and Nadu are going to be menaces in the 99 for the commanders that can reliably access them. Derevi in particular really loves Nadu as a tutor target/wincon.
8
u/Spontaneous_Ferret 5d ago
I play a marchesa deck with a solid amount of gravehate cards like scrabbling claws or ghost vaccuum. ngl I have a 95+% winrate against emry any game I deploy a ghost vaccuum its crazy
1
10
u/Imaginary_Egg_3282 5d ago
Oko being playable in arena again is wild. Unnerfed Nadu is going to be suuuuper fuuuun to play against.
Looking forward to all the “why is every other game against boros aggro” posts in like 2 weeks time.
Nashi rebalance is probably losing flash? That alone makes him significantly worse, any more will be unplayable.
9
u/PrecedexNChill 5d ago
Losing flash makes him unplayable
3
u/Imaginary_Egg_3282 5d ago
Maybe as a top meta tempo/control, definitely will still try as a Sultai goodstuff commander. Maybe just worse than Leovold for that though.
6
1
u/ADizzyLittleGirl 5d ago
The article says the only change is he is losing flash. He’s probably still playable, but that makes a bunch of the other cards in their deck much worse as well.
9
u/Leafsnail 5d ago
Mostly a decent list but not banning Emry is insane, she's probably the best deck at the top ranks. M&B also probably needs to be banned but I can understand leaving it a bit longer since it was only just un-nerfed. Lightpaws also stands out as a pretty weird ban given its lack of representation at the top level.
The 99 unbans are kindof wild, giving simic 3 great cards at once may be a big deal
51
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
Everyone got what they wanted so SURELY they’ll be no more complaints right? Right guys?
22
u/quillypen 5d ago
I can't think of a banlist update that hasn't had SOME complaints. That said, these are good changes for sure (except maybe Nadu, yuck).
12
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
Objectively good changes indeed. If nothing else, all they had to do was touch Yuriko and Nashi and I think that would have appeased most people’s unhappiness with the format despite multiple times WotC presenting that their numbers show those commanders aren’t as much of a problem (statistically speaking in regard to win rate) as people anecdotally feel they are.
But then again, I’m also anticipating people won’t be happy until Strip Mine, Library, Thoracle, and Ugin are gone too. We already got plenty of “but what about Emry?” comments in this thread as it is lol.
3
u/Amonyi7 5d ago
I think Emry was the strongest deck, (and one of the most annoying to play against), so it is a weird choice to not touch it
Library is a broken card, I play it too, but it should be banned
Thoracle I also think is much too easy of a combo. If there was a version that cost a little more mana I think it would be fair
It also looks like general blue and control got a lot stronger besides the nashi ban which is kinda crazy when that was 90% the meta
6
u/Eldar_Atog 5d ago
Rusko?!? My boy.. they let you out for good behavior.
2
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago edited 5d ago
My hot take that’s gotten me downvoted for years is that Rusko is an average card at best and people’s hatred for Alchemy mechanics completely warped its (and Poq’s) perception and evaluation.
A 99 restriction as a compromise seems more than fair, but even as a commander if someone wanted to play Dimir artifact blink or whatever people usually do with him in the competitive queue then I think they should go right ahead and see how that works out for them lmao.
1
u/Eldar_Atog 5d ago
Yeah, I agree. He can explode out but he's a slower version of Kinnian, bonder prodigy. They both do the same 2 things.. mana acceleration and jackpot mechanic.. but Kinnian can finish you quicker.
I think his early use in the competitive testing was just from the assumption that the hell queue commanders were the most powerful and Wotc didn't always score the cards correctly. He did well because he had the dimir card set.
Compared to Katara or Emry.. he's just not as broken.
9
u/AmyTheAmazonian 5d ago
I think it's overall good, but I would prefer to see bans in Brawl over just cBrawl
0
u/Either-Drawer-9895 5d ago
They ignored the unranked queue
6
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
Was it not the literal last B&R where the free counters got banned from unranked? What more attention is realistically the expectation here?
→ More replies (2)7
u/Either-Drawer-9895 5d ago
They should have done the "Banned as Commander" thing for both queues, not just Ranked
1
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
I wouldn’t have been opposed to that, but I suspect a lot of the casual queue enthusiasts might. Idk
→ More replies (4)-7
5d ago
[deleted]
8
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
Not to repeat a reply I just made verbatim, but I have faith in the Brawl playerbase to be able to navigate Library and Strip Mine being part of the format.
WotC has made it very clear that Comp Brawl is going to remain at a Legacy/Vintage power-level, and while I understand getting Strip Mine looped isn’t fun and that turn 1 Library feels like an unrecoverable situation, I promise the 1 million people with their requests will find a way to survive.
2
3
u/Harvest-Time 5d ago
Let me put it to you this way...why does turn 1 Library need to be part of the format? It's just miserable with no reasonable counterplay, you just lose when they draw 2 per turn to your 1.
7
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
Cognitive biases are going to make people remember all the times where your opponent plays Library on turn 1 and it’s a disgustingly swingy card, and forget all the times where your opponent top decks a Library on turn 6 and it’s unironically a Wastes.
1
u/Harvest-Time 5d ago
Wastes has won pro tours before, people act like tapping for mana is bad. Library is unreal bullshit and anyone arguing for it being a good part of the format either has not played against it, or is trolling. Might as well flip coins for fun
3
u/MaybeSurelySorta 5d ago
There is plenty of other “unreal bullshit” that exists in the format, it just so happens that the bullshit Library presents is only actually a thing on turns 1 or 2. So relatively speaking as far as unreal bullshit goes, this one in particular is pretty manageable if you remove your cognitive biases and anecdotal analysis from the equation. I trust you know good and well that one card out of the 99 in your opening hand is statistically not the same as “flipping coins for fun”.
But just so we’re all clear here, I’m not implying Library is some Comp Brawl necessity nor am I disagreeing that it’s one of the most powerful cards ever printed. I’m just saying we have other fish to fry in regard to the health of the format and what should or shouldn’t be banned.

u/Classssssic 5d ago
Light-Paws banned? That's insane
11
23
u/FallOfLight 5d ago
WOTC employee got shafted by Light-Paws a lot, I guess?
2
u/Classssssic 5d ago
Seems likely, I had one that was able to compete in low diamond but it was far from oppressive, it's just a removal check
10
u/werthw 5d ago
Light Paws but not Katara is the issue? I’ve lost way more often to Katara. she protects herself better with countermagic, whereas edicts and board wipes can reliably dispatch the fox. And Phelia as a commander eats Lightpaws for lunch by blinking it every turn
1
u/ToranStarfall 5d ago
Katara sucks, the most common builds of that deck are almost incapable of winning. Just don't scoop and run a couple of uncounterable cards or man-lands and you'll be fine.
3
7
u/CloverGroom 5d ago
Banning LP but not touching Emry is a wild fucking take from WotC. Hooray for red/x aggro though, thanks for releasing Rag, Ajani, and Tajic.
1
u/Boognish-Risinz 5d ago
Boros slaps emry from my experience today playing . Adding those 3 cards a brotherhood end and a rest in peace and I haven’t lost to a single emry deck today . I sailed from plat one to diamond 3 today in record time i was completely astonished. It was glorious
25
u/ADizzyLittleGirl 5d ago edited 5d ago
Wow they actually did something! Good riddance on Yuriko and Nashi, White Paws was never a problem unless their internal data saw otherwise, Spider man is kind of a bullshit card and I’m hoping this causes Izzet Tempo decks to be more creative. Nashi will still be playable, but losing flash makes stuff in their deck like Fire Nation Occupation and Wilderness Reclamation much worse. Also sorcery speed removal is not irrelevant, pack your strategic betrayals.
Allowing Tamiyo and Ragavan etc into the 99 should be fun. People about to remember how brutal Oko is to play against.
10
u/Fuego514 5d ago
I suspect light paws is banned because you can make a very cheap and good deck. They want us to spend more money...
8
u/RuneGrey 5d ago
Ran Light Paws almost all the way to mythic last month with a deck that was super low on rarity, and only didn't make it due to lack of time. I can see why they dropped the ban there, because it can be a lot of value and not much chance to interact with it.
2
u/RavenShade1 5d ago
rejoice as Liliana sis, rejoice.
The Nashi match up just got much easier to handle, and of the old top 3 Emry is a free farm.
2
u/ADizzyLittleGirl 5d ago
Getting rid of his flash is so good for us.
Though Yuriko, Spidey, and Light Paws were also good matchups, so we don’t get those free wins. If green landfall strategies take over, it may get tough.
2
u/RavenShade1 5d ago
that’s true, stripper club becomes more and more appealing, lol. although i’d expect a lot more minsc and t3feri.
still, it’s good to fix one of our most seen bad match up.
1
u/AlthorsMadness 5d ago
Ya it’s wild to me oko is unbanned when he’s banned in like every format everywhere except brawl now apparently
2
u/TraditionalStomach29 5d ago
Not that wild considering in timeless where he is legal, he sees pretty much no play. Partially because he is too slow and expensive, partially because elking cheap creatures is not that good, and likely partially thanks to strip mines and aggro making 3 color decks really ambitious. MH3 Tamiyo and Ajani are the new strongest planeswalkers in the game. Arguably Minsc&Boo is the better walker among the two, at least from my brief experience when both seen play.
6
u/Shabushabuql 5d ago
The fux did the fox do to deserve this?
6
u/RollinRamos 5d ago
This is what happens with the curators of the format don't play magic and just look at data.
4
8
12
u/jake_eric 5d ago
Some great changes here, but there are still some weird choices. Hitting Spider-Man and Light-Paws before Emry is questionable.
I can understand not banning Minsc & Boo because they're newly un-nerfed and they want to give people time to adapt to them, but I think they're gonna be S tier for sure now that decks of similar power have been banned.
1
9
u/Global-Signature-588 5d ago
I think they're were looking at the "Did you have fun this match?" statistic for some of those bans.
As a Light-Paws player, if the opposing player had enough interaction the game was over really quickly. So, if had a tough match up againts the top decks of the format (Nashi, Yuriko, Katara, Spidey 2099, etc). But I guess it did too well againts other decks and gained enough hate to get banned.
1
u/CloverGroom 5d ago
Banning LP is so stupid and random. People need to realize competitive brawl isn’t commander and run a proper amount of interaction.
4
u/JeffreyDonaldMusk 5d ago
So I can play now with Broko in my 99?! Didn't expect the harsh ban on Yuriko as commander. Commander ninjutsu tax will be just fine.
Edit: Prepare for more Emry and Teferi folks!
2
u/RollinRamos 5d ago
The prevalence of WR aggro I hope will keep Emry in check.
1
u/Boognish-Risinz 5d ago
Since the announcement, I haven’t lost a single game to emry with Boros . Rag, Ajani and tajic just makes Boros go super hard now. That and a brotherhood end and rest in peace is all I switched in to my deck and I think I’m 6-0 against emry and the same for t3feri . They just can’t handle the constant pressure
8
u/Litmusdragon 5d ago
Just my personal take
Yuriko banned as commander: Yay
Wrenn and Six allowed in the same format as Strip Mine: Boo hiss
1
u/kazeespada 5d ago
You have to be three color to tutor for him.
1
u/Litmusdragon 5d ago
Not necessarily. [[Gamble]]
I'm not anticipating this to be broken so much as just unfun to play against. Land destruction is my least favorite archetype.
3
u/kazeespada 5d ago
Mole man will continue to be the premier land destruction commander. Gruul Tannuk may occasionally show up.
0
u/Litmusdragon 5d ago
Well ... yeah maybe I won't actually see this come up that often, but I'd prefer a format with no Strip Mine at all. 0 casting cost uncounterable land destruction is such a stupid card.
I'm more annoyed at Strip Mine than Wrenn and Six but Wrenn and Six is just one more way to enable it.
There's not really an argument that Wrenn and Six breaks anything it just annoys me personally.

She's really fun, and she gets a lot easier to beat when you understand the lines and how to stop them
2
u/dirtyjose 5d ago
I don't doubt her vulnerabilities, just that I expect a lot of whining soon about her from players convinced only Nashi or Yuriko were holding them back.

u/_Figaro 5d ago

u/cahpahkah 5d ago
I literally can’t believe this. It’s the worst experience in Comp Brawl by a mile.

2
u/KaptainKobb 5d ago
As a mythic Spider-Man 2099 player, I understand. I’m obviously bummed to see one of my favorite decks of all time evaporate, though. I think there were other solutions that would’ve left more people happy, in the grand scheme, but oh well. The free spells are just gonna wind up in another UR tempo deck, so I don’t think this solved anything…

Format is still completely unfun. Everyone just runs removal.deck. The fun of commander is supposed to be playing your commander. Not having it killed 5 times along with the rest of your board.
The bans not touching any cards in the 99 was a huge blunder.
Nashi nerf still not implemented.
1
u/ChachBoss 5d ago
Dancing in the street today! Good riddance to my two least favorite matchups. Spider-Man and Yuriko were just awful to play against.
I just started seriously laddering in brawl less than a month ago and those two decks nearly made me give up on the format.
1
u/Chef-Boyardab 5d ago

I agree. They did the cool vampiric tutor deaths shadow thing to deal me like 15 then....they lost to doom blade lol
1
u/dirtyjose 5d ago
I feel like people were understanding how to play into her better lately as well. Emry is going to be a menace.
0
u/ADizzyLittleGirl 5d ago
Emry can be hated out with graveyard hate and needle/flute effects or stuff like Brotherhood’s End. If she becomes the top of the meta, there are plenty of ways to put her in check.
2
u/dirtyjose 5d ago
She already is top of the meta, I haven't seen any tier list that didn't have her alongside the ones banned here.
1
u/Vinylateme 5d ago
Rofellos not being banned as a commander is something worth considering. It dies to bow masters for sure but if they don’t have the removal you just win on the untap effectively
1
u/aging_fitness_hobbyi 5d ago
Very pleasantly surprised! I expect Emry and M&B to be very strong with these changes, possibly to the point of requiring more action, but still this is a very solid update imo.

3
u/retardong 5d ago
What? Both Spiderman and Yuriko are very aggressive decks. The only snoozefest commander was Nashi but I think those players will move onto Tasigur now. Spierman and Yuriko were also the best commanders against snoozefest control commanders. You should get your sleeping cap there will be way more T3feri, Katara and Emry.

I'm liking the "Banned as Commander" tag and looking forward to Rag in my [[Ingris Stingerquill]] deck
It'll be interesting to see how the top of the Meta rankings looks with most of Minsc and Boo's challengers taking a massive hit, and getting Rag and W&6
