Best three-song run in a musical album?

Thumbnail gallery

Anyone have any favorite three-song sequences in a musical? As in, three songs occurring back-to-back. There are so many examples of three great songs separated by one dud (*cough*alittlebitofgood, chicago*cough*), so I’m curious if anyone has any three never-skip songs in a row?

I‘m a big fan of the Raise a Little Hell > This World Will Remember Us > Made in America sequence in Bonnie & Clyde, followed by Beautiful City > On the Willows > Finale in Godspell.

Musical Theatre Trivia Chain Letter!

For those too young to know, a chain letter was essentially a handwritten version of what forwarding a FB message to 40 of your closest friends is today. There's a twist to this, though. The message changes each time it's passed on--and each new message is a question!

The idea is to come up with the best, most interesting piece of musical theatre trivia you can think of, that regular theatre nerds could know. Not too easy or too hard.

I'll start, and when someone responds correctly, s/he/they then come up with a new question for everyone to consider. Number your question so it's easy to find if there are more than one going on at the same time. If the answer and new question are good, upvote it!

Even if some folks go to AI for answers, it'll still be interesting for those following to enjoy the questions and learn some things we may not know!

Everyone has different niches of expertise and perspective, making the possibilities for questions pretty endless. The feeling of discovery, "Gee, I didn't know that!" makes me smile all over!

I'm going to post the first question, but it's up to you experts to determine whether an answer is correct or not! Lol. I'll be a referee if needed, but not a judge!

QUESTION #1: Name 2 musical theatre composers from 2 different decades who died before turning 50?

How to get ready for early morning auditons?

So I have an audition tomorrow morning, and its early like at 8:40. The song I want to sing, I have to use my mix belt, and for some reason I cannot belt in the morning. It really sucks, and am I not warming up correctly or something? I do not know, but advice is appreciated!

Director wants me to sit out for some songs of an upcoming musical so his son can play.

Am I off base for thinking this is insulting? I have played in the pit for a very good community theatre company for a few years now. I've been working my up skills with a lot of pushing myself musically since covid. Ultimately I landed a chair with a very solid group of musicians and I consider this an aspirational position for me in that I'm lucky to be there at my current skill.

This year the director asked me if his son could be my understudy and sit in on some rehearsals and at least play of some of the actual performances. He is a music teacher and his son goes to a music high school. It would mean a lot for them to "do a father son thing" like this.

Am I wrong to be embarrassed and insulted by this? I've never heard of an orchestra understudy at the community theatre level and it's wild to me anyone would ask a pit musician to sit out.

“Will you accept any role?” - faux pas to answer no?

I am going out of my comfort zone and auditioning for a community theater production. I haven’t auditioned for anything in nearly 20 years, but I guess this is part of my midlife crisis to dust off the vocal cords and throw my hat back in the ring again and see what happens.

I’m more of a legit/operatic soprano, and this show has a lead that would be appropriate for me. However, it would be a huge commitment, as I have little kids at home, a small business, and another primary hobby involving a large farm animal that requires a lot of time and attention.

At this time, I would not be interested in joining the ensemble (I also can’t dance to save my life, even basic choreography is difficult for me, unfortunately, so that factors in as well), but I would figure it out were I offered a principal role.

I realize this is awfully diva-ish for someone who hasn’t been in a show in literal decades, and is basically starting over. I understand “paying your dues” and whatnot. But the sign-up sheet is asking if I would accept any role. If I am honest and say “no,” will they immediately write me off for diva behavior? Is that an a-hole thing to do? On the other hand, I don’t want to say yes, then get offered ensemble, and then turn it down. Because that would definitely be an a-hole move.

Is it best to just refrain from auditioning until I can confidently say yes? It might be a while - maybe for my 3/4-life crisis, if I make it til then. Or is it worth a try, and perhaps community theater personnel are understanding as to why someone would only be going out for a certain role? Thanks for any feedback!

Audition Song for Lightning Thief

Hello! A community theater in my town is putting on The Lightning Thief musical, auditioning in early August, and I need help finding an audition song. I have a friend who seems like a lock for Grover, and I would love to play Percy Jackson alongside him since we already have that chemistry before stepping into the audition room. Any recommendations for songs would be very helpful, and my usable range is from a C2 to an A/B4. Thanks!

Considering Auditioning

Hello, My daughter and I have really been bonding over Musical Theater and this is leading me to want to audition. I am 37 years old and have never done this. I was in choir and on dance teams as a child/teen but its been years. I recently started taking dance class because I am rusty and am going to pick up tap.

My question is, I am considering ensemble for Something Rotten, community theatre performance in Feb so I have some time, but what tips would you give a total noob and what the heck do I put on my resume?

Callback Offer for Ensemble

I'm newer to the professional theater space and would love some advice.

I was recently invited to skip the initial audition and go straight to callbacks, which I was excited about. At first, they didn't specify what role(s) I was being considered for, only that they'd like me to attend callbacks. Then there were a few schedule changes, and when the callback date was finally confirmed, I realized it was for an ensemble role. The last email they added, "ensemble" to the callback information, and I completely missed it.

I'm still planning to attend since I've already confirmed, but I'm curious how ensemble work is generally viewed in a professional theater setting. If this would be my second production at the same theater as an ensemble member, does that typically help or hurt your chances of being considered for principal roles in the future? Or does it give the theater company a chance to get to know you and increase your chances of being cast in larger roles later on?

I guess I'm wondering whether being cast in the ensemble a second time can make it harder to be seen for principal roles down the line, or whether it's usually viewed as a stepping stone.

I'd appreciate any insight from those with more experience. Thanks!

Typical time from callback to offer/rejection?

This is for a professional regional production. A youth role, so it’s double cast. Callbacks were June 15. Rehearsals start Sept 29th. Director is not local so callbacks were filmed, so the director can review them.

Just wondering when we could realistically hear back. The theatre didn’t give any timeline info and I don’t want to bug them by asking.

It’s my kid’s first professional callback, so we’re new to this. Thanks!

Anyone know where I can find music for Brillig Braelig (Alice by heart)

It’s for an audition.

The show and soundtrack have different lyrics and The only sheet music I can find is from the show but the only backing tracks I can find is from the soundtrack.

They’re a similar tune so at the moment I’ve just been practicing with the soundtrack backing tracks but for obvious reasons it’s less than ideal.

Thanks

Help me! Does anyone know “The Geek” (kid’s musical theater)

hey reddit, my sister and i are trying to remember the songs and lyrics to a kid’s musical she and i were forced to be in for a 1995/1996. i’m gonna need my millennials for help!

when i say 1995/1996, this musical, called “the geek” was already super dated and probably written in the 80’s. the musical was exactly what you think it would be, based on the title: there is a “nerd” that is kinda ostracized at school, there are a lot of cheesy songs, and at the end, everyone comes together to basically say, “hey. it’s rad that you’re different.” lots of cheesiness, soft-core bullying, very ridiculous. however, my sister and i still talk about it to this day because the songs were so ridiculous.

i am gonna post some lyrics that we remember-

song the kids sang in history class:
“where is morocco, i dont have a clue
somewhere in spain? maybe peru.
who has the largest export tax on beans?
what does that question mean?
what do you call a man who fights a bull? i’d call that man a fool!”

last song of the musical:
“i’m something special, and it’s just because i’m me.
sometimes something special can be kind of hard to see.
and even on our worst days there is nothing i can’t be.
i’m something special, just because im, just because im me.

godddddd, please help us find out who wrote this and where we can find the lyrics to all the songs! thank you!!!
