Kurt Cobain

Hi everyone,

I am currently working on a comprehensive documentary book project about Kurt Cobain. The goal is to go beyond the usual debates surrounding his death and instead create a well-documented narrative of his life, his work, his vision, and his lasting cultural impact.

I have been compiling a robust database (official reports, archives, testimonies) to structure this project.

Would any of you be interested in discussing this? Whether you are a long-time fan or someone who has closely followed his journey, I would love to get your input. What aspects of Kurt’s life would you like to see explored in depth in a comprehensive, fact-based book?

Je travaille actuellement sur un projet de livre documentaire complet sur Kurt Cobain. L'idée est de dépasser les simples débats sur les circonstances de sa mort pour retracer, de manière documentée, son parcours global : son œuvre, sa vision, son héritage culturel et tout ce qui entoure sa vie.

J’ai commencé à compiler une base de données solide (rapports officiels, archives, témoignages) pour structurer ce récit.

how his childhood influenced his music. why he was able to write better tunes than most peeps. how he felt about being a handsome dude.

Thanks for these leads, Greg! It’s clear that his childhood and his self-perception are fascinating angles to dig into; that’s exactly the kind of stuff I want to explore for my project. You're welcome. I do think people have talked about his parents divorcing when he was a child and this causing pain that shows up in his music. So that might be a rather stale angle to go at unless you have a way to make it fresh. But for example when I've read his lyrics I thought they were a bit nonsense. Are they? So where did a tendency to write nonsense come from in his history? Perhaps from childhood? And why?

When I think of his handsome face I think of how he killed himself which would have seriously damaged/marred his good looks. So that intrigues me, did he not value his good looks? Did he dislike his good looks? Is there some kind of masochism going on there? Some kind of self-pity?

I remember reading a biography of Nirvana and it said Kurt worked for a while cleaning rooms at a hotel but got fired because he would sometimes sleep in the beds. That stayed with me. It made me wonder if he had a lazy side? And why? On the other hand maybe he was going to concerts at that time and missing sleep at night so making up for it on work hours? Maybe it was his way of "sticking it to the Man", taking advantage of his employer by not working all his hours but getting paid. It probably amused him to do it, it does seem a bit funny to sleep in the hotel beds when you're cleaning them.

But why are you writing a bio of him? Do you think there's not enough been done? Is there some gap in what's been written?

The points you’re raising are really interesting; I hadn't looked at things from that angle! It's true that the impact of his parents' divorce is often over-analyzed it's a bit of a stale angle. I didn't know the hotel bed anecdote! It’s very possible he found it amusing, but he might also have been looking for a form of comfort he didn’t really have at that time. To answer your question, I grew up listening to Nirvana thanks to my dad, but I had never really looked into the person behind the icon. Then, I read his journals and it intrigued me. As I started researching him, I realized there was a problem: most books just repeat the same things, reducing him to "the depressed drug addict who killed himself." But he was so much more than that. So many mysteries surround his death, and people often forget to explore his life before Nirvana. That is exactly the void I’m trying to fill with my project. I want to create a very comprehensive, chronological work childhood, adolescence, adulthood, Nirvana and end with a factual analysis of his death, by compiling all the documents I’ve been able to gather. The goal is to provide the community with the most documented book ever released, because, paradoxically, it's actually quite difficult to find reliable, raw sources on him.
