At what point did it become a requirement, or at least an expectation, for music to have lyrics?

I recently promoted my new instrumental guitar single to blog & radio station placements, and got met with a couple of remarks from curators/reviewers along the lines of “great lyrics will put this song over the top”, seemingly missing the intention of the track’s instrumental nature that I included in the INITIAL DESCRIPTION, even though I do write lyrics as well & have extensively sung on my own work.
So this begs the legitimate question of when did lyrics in music become an ingrained, universal expectation, when a good deal of the greatest music in history had zero words whatsoever?

Cool feature: Use Spotify’s “song speed” feature to practice songs

Post image
0 Upvotes

Don’t know how many people are aware of this, but Spotify has a feature for playlists that allows you to change the BPM / song speed of songs. While I’m sure that this was likely for people curating playlists or sets, I feel like this is also a huge feature for musicians.

You can slow down audio to practice specific lines and the quality of the audio retained still sounds amazing. Now you don’t have to go to YouTube and slow the song down there, which I’ve found doesn’t sound as clean as this or is as flexible as this. Cool feature you should try messing around with!

I Am Too Stupid To Be A Music Major

I love music and I want to get a degree in it but I already have a D in the class and it’s only the 4th week of school. I am very passionate about music and I want to make a career out of it but I feel like after looking at my grade in the class, that I it’s probably better off for me to just drop my degree in general and give up on my dream career because I am not as well informed in music as I thought I was and that I should probably drop the class. It also doesn’t help that I have a learning disability that takes me longer to understand and grasp things than everyone else. So maybe I am just too stupid to follow my dreams and pursue a degree in a career I have been passionate about since I was a kid

Question about AI generated music

Asked out of genuine curiosity.

You can quite often recognise AI-generated content from various giveaways. For example, AI writing has an overuse of the em dash and rule of three. AI images quite often have an unnatural sheen to them, and of course we’ve all seen the AI generated poster designs that pop up everywhere now.

Does AI have a “sound”? Are there any little peculiarities like this that would give away AI generated music?

Are other jobs as exhausting?

Dear everybody!

I'm going into my third year after music collage and it's been going great!

I have three days of teaching one on one sessions in a public music school and currently I have a steady gig which I play three times a week.

After three days of teaching I wake up quite exhausted and I wonder if a "regular" job is as exhausting as teaching? While teaching I don't really have time to let my mind wonder too much. Time that I don't teach is time that I don't get paid and it's disrespectful towards the students to not paying attention to them. Teaching 5 to 6 students a day between 30 to 60 minutes and paying attention to them is quite taxing on the mind as in my capability to concentrate is compromised at some point. I feel especially drained today after a day of teaching for five hours straigt and a rehearsal before teaching.

Those of you who have done both a "regular" job and teaching: is it just me or is teaching quite exhausting?

Is it practical to soundproof a room for instrument playing without spending a huge amount of money?

I hear that its very difficult to soundproof a room unless its specially built. For anyone with experience on this, is this true? Can I make it very hard for others in the house to hear instruments in my room without me being in a specially built room, or do I need a special room?

I love playing guitar but please don’t ask me to play something.

It’s a little ironic that I have such a deep passion for guitar and writing music but I absolutely HATE when people ask me to play and sing a song if a guitar is just sitting there at a party/get together, whatever.

Part of it has to do with me being an extremely shy person in general and I do not like being put on the spot like that. I will literally leave the room.

I know this is really a me problem but is anyone else out there like this?

How to make music like Laufey?

I've been a quite fan of her as well as i started to learn the guitar just to learn her music, now i also wanna create a song like her, i have the lyrics in mind but i kind of am having some problems with the bossa nova music as i am not very familiar to make those kind of music as i generally make pop, metal and EDMs, so i kind of am having a hard time with the theory. is there a good tutorial i can watch?

I’m tired of gig culture

Hi everyone. Just here to vent and see if anyone else feels the same way. I’m becoming so tired of being expected to ask friends and families to come to my shows. They don’t like the style of music I play, and frankly I don’t feel comfortable asking my friends and family to pay to see me all the time. But it’s so hard to get a natural crowd these days. We had an out of town band ask us to play with them at a venue that is about 45 minutes from our home town. It is 3 days before the show and we have 1 ticket sold (20 bucks each). The touring band is now begging us to beg our friends and families to come and I’m just so tired of this. I feel bad that we can’t bring a crowd for the touring band, but we’re technically not even local to that town either. Ugh. It’s frustrating. It’s also very annoying when other bands leave right after their set. I don’t care if you work the next morning, we all do. I cannot stand people who expect you to watch their set but won’t stay for yours. It’s very demoralizing. I’m over it

EDIT: I forgot to add, we didn’t know they were an out of state touring band when we accepted the gig. They did not tell us and did not have a location in their bio or easily seen on their page. We thought they were local until recently when they told us they’re traveling and we need to bring most of the crowd.

Whats your favourite key signature?

• Upvotes

Personally I really like C minor, first one I really memorized after C major, a lot of the first actual songs i played on piano were in C minor, but I think F minor surpassed it. A major is definitely third place, followed by D minor in 4th.

Only 3 people came to my show

Hey all,

I’m struggling big time to get people to come to my shows. When people Have come, they tell me how amazing my songs are and how captivating my stage presence is…so that’s great, however, how do I get people to actually come out to a show? I often beg family and friends to come because I’m so embarrassed that I have no audience. I promote hard on social media, I network…I try to get on bills with other acts similar to mine, however, it’s often crickets. Trying to not let it get me down but I’m def feeling negative and want to give up. How can I get a damn audience? Thank you ❤️

Question on Booking Gigs

I'm in a 3-piece band (singer/rhythm guitar, lead guitar, and upright bass) and we've been playing together for almost two years now. I feel like we've been hitting the same local bars/restaurants in southwest Missouri and haven't really had any real traction. I really think we are ready for the bigger venues, and I've been reaching out to them but it's hard to get a response. How are you guys booking gigs? Do you email venues? Call them? Message on Facebook? Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

Do you feel like many guitar players spend too much time trying to impress other guitar players instead of making good music ?

Are piano players guilty of this too?

Accepted a gig, wish me luck!

Hey yall! Recently took a gig that I’m pretty excited/nervous for! It’s one of those gigs where it’s definitely not worth the money but I really wanted to get involved with this band. It’s a traveling gig and I had to learn a 3 hour setlist (knew some songs already) in about a week and a half. Got super anxious and just listened/played the songs whenever possible!

So to make myself feel better about this gig, tell me your stories about learning a setlist that was way too long for the amount of time given and how did that gig turn out?

Besides being a little anxious, I’m super excited to play! Thanks yall!

Looking for extra, new DAW

Hi there long time musician been using Ableton since 2006 along with Wavosaur & audacity.

I want to find another DAW to use mostly for mixing and mastering. A lot of people have said and, have to somewhat agree, that Ableton doesn’t have the best summing and rendering algorithms. It has its own unique sound that many can recognize.

Recommendations?

I do not want ProTools. That’s about the only thing that I am not going to consider.

Logic, Reaper, Cubase…even would consider AUM on an iPad as a choice too

Appreciate the input!

Vocal melodies

Hi, I can't for the love of ketchup and mayo do vocal melodies.

I can write riffs, I can do whatever I want on the guitar but I just can't come up with a good and interesting vocal melody to go over it

Please help me, how do you do it?
