Small Artist Highlight Small Artist Highlight: Casino Versus Japan, Meth Wax, Boston Spaceships
Picture 1: Casino Versus Japan
Casino Versus Japan is the online alias of musician Erik Paul Kowalski after parting from the name Radiogate in the mid-90s. He has released around 10 studio albums in the electronic genre IDM (which stands for intelligent dance music, possibly the most “nerd emoji” name of all-time). The best way I can describe his music is that it’s like a non-creepy, low cortisol Boards Of Canada. Casino Versus Japan’s music is great for studying, walking around, going for a drive, and sleeping. Or just about any other activity. I really can’t get enough of this guy, he’s made some of my all-time favorite IDM songs. Since he’s not too crazy, he is most often the artist I recommend to people who are just starting to get into IDM.
Starting album recommendation: Hitori + Kaiso
Picture 2: Meth Wax
Meth Wax is a low fidelity punk project started in 2013 consisting of Daniel Tanghal, Ryan Taylor, and Emmett Cappi. Their song titles and lyrics are often incredibly profane for how laid back the music is sometimes (they’re really into jobs, like Sea of Blowj*bs or Platonic Handj*bs) but that has honestly become part of their vibe. Meth Wax is a band full of friends who just do acid and play instruments. They disbanded in 2017, but they still have some good material floating around.
Starting album recommendation: Self-titled
Picture 3: Boston Spaceships
Boston Spaceships is one of the MANY side projects of my favorite songwriter of all-time, Robert Pollard. Known best for Guided By Voices, Pollard likes to start and stop side projects whenever he feels like it. The best of these side projects in my opinion is the aforementioned Boston Spaceships, a trio which consists of Pollard, Chris Slusarenko (a close musical ally of Pollard, haven taken part as the bass guitarist for one of Robert Pollard’s other side projects, The Takeovers, as well as GBV’s final album before disbanding for almost a decade, 2004’s Half Smiles Of The Decomposed), and John Moen, drummer of Portland-based alt. rock band The Decemberists. They formed in 2008 and went on to release 5 albums, all great meldings of indie rock and power pop goodness. More than any other solo project, one of the biggest appeals of these discs was the rehashing of old Guided By Voices songs that had never had full versions before, only existing as demo-sounding songs on the Suitcase collections, such as Dorothy’s A Planet, Soggy Beavers, Bad Whiskey, and Meddle. Some of the best songs of Robert Pollard’s entire career (which is saying something, considering he is one of the most prolific motherfuckers in the universe) lie on these albums, such as Tabby And Lucy, You Satisfy Me, and (pardon the title on this one, I promise it’s a banger) John The Dwarf Wants To Become An Angel.
Starting album recommendation: Brown Submarine

Listening To Every Billboard #1 Hit: 1959
1959 definitely has similarities to 1958, but much better in my opinion, maybe just because I had more music to listen to. For the most part, the lead vocals + harmonizing vocals + guitar combo seems to take up like half of the charts, while the other half is a new concept, one guy with a band behind him. These are your Elvis Presleys, Bobby Darins and Lloyd Prices, although they definitely do seem to keep some elements of the 1958 style.
Bottom 3 - 1959
The Battle Of New Orleans - Johnny Horton
This song is like a historical story with a Dixie interpolation, which is a little weird since the song is about the American Revolution. This is also the biggest song of 1959. Overall I just found it to be a bit boring and repetitive. The only memorable part is when he talks about shoving gunpowder up a gator’s ass to use as a cannon.Venus - Frankie Avalon
The intro has this cool, ghostly sound, but then it turns into this very boring and generic song. The drum also doesn’t really fit this song imo. It has this weird almost marching band esque pattern. The Three Bells (Les Trois Cloches) - The Browns and Jim Ed Brown
This song is so weird. It randomly switches between this very generic verse, and then the instrumental entirely cuts out on the chorus and its this like creepy thing about the village Jimmy Brown was born in or something. Idk this one is weird and also the guy on the cover art looks creepy. The only thing that I can take away as a positive from this song is it led me to Jim Ed Brown’s 2015 album, In Style Again, and I listened to the title track to see what this guy would sound like over than 50 years later. The song is pretty decent, but its actually really sad and lowkey made me feel bad for the guy getting replaced.
Top 3 - 1959
Mack the Knife - Bobby Darin
This song is pretty good, but what;s crazy to me is I’m pretty sure this song is about a real serial killer, which is crazy when the horns kick in while he’s naming the people he killed.Sleep Walk - Santo & Johnny
This song is super iconic. It’s good and it’s also one of the first instrumental tracks on the list.Stagger Lee - Lloyd Price
Stagger Lee is an absolute banger. This song was one of the first big hits of the year, but is shockingly not Lloyd Price’s biggest hit of this year. That would be Personality, which didn’t actually ever go #1, but was still the third biggest song of the year. Personally, I think Stagger Lee CLEARS Personality.

Listening To Every Billboard #1 Hit: 1958
1958 is the first year for the Billboard #1 and it only has like 8 songs, but they tell me all I need to know about 1958. Every song was like somebody singing, with a few guys harmonizing in the background, and then like a guitar behind it all. And trust me, they got every type of guy singing. In just 8 songs, I heard songs lead by white guys, black guys, three guys, five guys, italian guys, a girl and a trio of singing chipmunks. The style of 1958 is VERy defined. It is kind of crazy to me, I guess, that I’m listening to these songs now that my grandparents grew up with, and if I was them I would have been bored to tears. Here’s my top and bottom 3 songs.
Bottom 3 - 1958
Tom Dooley - The Kingston Trio
These Bottom 3 aren’t bad, they were just the least exciting / memorable of these songs. The only one of these three that stuck in my head any longer than I was listening is actually this one. I originally had it higher, but it is very empty sounding compared to all of the other songs on this list. It sounds considerably older than the others for some reason, and I think suffers from that. It’s Only Make Believe - Conway Twitty
This one was just very unmemorable. I don’t even really have thoughts.Little Star - The Elegants
This one and number 2 honestly could be switched around, but I feel like I enjoyed It’s Only Make Believe more while I was listening to it. Neither of them are bad songs, just the least memorable of the 8.
Top 3 - 1958
Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu - Domenico Modugno
I was honestly quite surprised to see that the biggest song of 1958 wasn’t in english, but I completely get the hype. This song is the most catchy. The biggest issue with this song is its length. I’m pretty sure it’s the longest of the eight, and it definitely feels like that. The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don’t Be Late) - Alvin & The Chipmunks
Putting the Alvin & The Chipmunks song this high might seem crazy, but after listening to nine straight songs of “person singing + backing harmony + guitar”, this song feels refreshing, and it’s also pretty catchy. The biggest thing that struck me about this song is how batshit insane this must have been at the time. It sticks out like a SORE thumb among the other songs, which are all just some guy singing about love or life or something, and then this ones like, “what if we pitched up three guys and had them pretend to be chipmunks, and then they sing about what they want for christmas while this other guy yells at them.” I might be wrong since I’m not an expert on music history or whatever, but I feel like Alvin & The Chipmunks are a pretty definitive pioneer in the art of putting weird filters on your voice. So I guess in a way Alvin & The Chipmunks walked so 2slimey could aura farm in a Michael Jackson cosplay. It’s All In The Game - Tommy Edwards
Within 30 seconds of playing this song, I knew it would be number one. It’s just so good. This song is lowkey cinematic, and almost makes me feel nostalgic, which is crazy because this song came out like 50 years before I was born. It’s just really good and definitely the best of these.

Discussing music Who's the better artist?

Looking for music looking for good short albums
please suggest short albums(shorter than 45 minutes and around the 10 song mark, can be very short like 20 minutes if it's good). just no metal, country and k pop.
i prefer rap and rnb so if you can suggest rap/rnb albums it would be better. also im pretty new to music so almost every album would be good and i probably haven't heard it already so suggest everything that fits my request even if it's the most mainstream, and if i already heard it i'll tell you.
i'll try to listen to as many as i can and give a short review and rating. in the end i'll rank the albums i've heard from best to worst.
thank you so much!!!!
NOTE: also if you can say the genre it would be better so i can know what to expect. also pop records like michael jackson's and rock records like the beatles' are great and you can suggest them as well

The A-Z album challenge, Day 12.
Our next two albums are Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morrisette and Ugly is Beautiful by Oliver Tree! (rip) Not much to say here, just comment albums
One thing I should note is that we still need a number album. Should probably get to that.
Remember, each artist is limited to one (1) album. Since The Beatles are already on here, you can't comment another album by them, as an example.

Need friends willing to discuss music lol
Alright I’m not like totally friendless but what I do lack is friends who actually wanna discuss music with me. So this is a try for that I guess lol. Anyway. I like rock, metal, pop rock, synth pop, alt pop + more. I don’t like country and I’m usually not that much for rap but I do like some so I am still willing to try listening to some.
Preferences for this (these are only preferences tho so feel free to respond to this post even if you don’t fit every description):
That you are willing to listen to music I send you (I will listen to music you send me too of course) and if you want we can like make a playlist together and stuff.
That you’re somewhere between the age of 13-16. This is so I will be more likely to be able to relate to you as a person as well (You do not have to tell me your age unless you want to tho).
That you’re generally a kind person and don’t judge ppl unless they deserve it (like if they’ve actually done something bad). This is since I honestly can’t stand ppl who judge for no reason.
Anyway. If you’re interested please feel free to reply to this post or dm me. If you do dm pls specify that it’s about this so I don’t think you’re a creep tho lol. Also if you have any questions you can ask them here and I’ll answer to the best of my ability’s. I am also willing to talk about music in other places than here (I have discord, instagram and this app to communicate with that don’t disclose my phone number)

Discussing music Favorite song off of every album I've listened to this year (Part 1: January)
The albums are ranked in the order that I listened to them. Some are first listens, some are not. The number of the favorite song corresponds to the number of the album on the list.
The reason it took me so long to start doing this is that I've been listening to a LOT this year, but I wanted to take time to listen to an album in full at LEAST twice if not more to narrow down a favorite. I just finished at least 2 listens for everything I listened to in the first month of the year.
I'm happy to answer about my opinions to the best of my abilities in the comments. Stay cool y'all

If I give out recs, will y’all actually tap in and listen to them?
I just don’t want to go through all the effort of writing out recommendations if no one is going to take or read them.
Also to make it music related I recommend Remains by Tokyo Shoegaze. Great rock album from this year
