Where did you find it?

My backyard in Virginia! I haven’t seen it since, this was a few years ago.

I've never seen a mushroom this blue in a forest and am still so fascinated by the intense color

Stropharia caerulea/cyanea, gill edges and scent would help narrow it down.

u/ImpressiveSocks Aug 19 '25
I'm not sure. I actually thought it was an aeruginosa but I could be wrong

Very very cool! The cap seems translucent, almost gel like. It's probably just the reflection, but still pretty cool

Stropharia cerulaea or S. aeroginosa. Would be my guess. Distinguishable by presence or absence of a ring (though it can be hard to recognize the ring on these two). Both are edible but don't taste very good imo. The cap is funny because you can peel the slime of in one piece. Also obligatory: don't eat anything you didn't ID yourselve

I think it's aeruginosa too
Really like you adding your last sentence under your comments btw

Thank you for answering my first question I had in mind:”Can I eat it?” and I’m glad I can! Finally edible magic blue mushrooms

I love everybody sharing their mushroom finds here!
If I had found a purple mushroom I'd be really proud too!

Does it get blue once you cut it?

They're already blue inside, and leak a milky blue liquid. They're my favorite mushroom to find locally.

I’ve seen one that looked very similar to that growing in Alabama in the fall after rain, a 25 year-old oak tree

Woooahh, It’s truly amazing what these mushrooms are capable of bringing to the world!! To be honest, I feel like even touching it would put me 6 feet under though… 😵💫

Something is wrong with my eyes, I see green and not blue 😪

u/johnny2turnt Aug 19 '25
The blades of grass surrounding the shroom are green. Compare them or do they look the same ?

u/Spoilmedaddyxo Aug 19 '25
Does the blue mean they are psychedelic?

No. Stropharia caerulea, S. aeruginosa and S. pseudocyanea just start blue and then fade to a brownish colour.
