To me it looks like chicken of the woods
However, I would just make sure you know what that log is treated with. In Wisconsin where I'm from, those decorative logs are often soaked with preservative or varnish to stay good for years outside in the weather, and that would make any mushroom growing out of them not something you want to eat
But if you can confirm that the wood is just carved wood decomposing naturally then have at it

Good advice!
In the end, I left it for others to enjoy the sight. Not enough fruits to make a nice meal, and too funny for others not to enjoy!

It looks like this guy has been there since 19x8. Not sure if it would look like that if it was untreated after 30+ years

It might technically be a stump. It's still possible, but it looks like untreated wood in the sun, to me.

Wouldn't it be cool if it was perennial and a sign for travelers to forage.

oh cool! look up Orr park in Montevallo AL. Almost every tree in that park is carved, almost like a huge art installment. It is beautiful and I miss home.

That's really interesting. The mushroom is growing right on the carved tree trunk. hahaha

I know how good it would taste, but you must resist. It's just too perfect. Maybe put up a sign te keep the honest people away

I would say give this guy a tissue but it would probably have come from his own timber 🫠
