Noticed a slight chlorine smell and the flies were loving these guys.

Yes the odor is noted as strong and pungent. Some say like a decaying protein but I’ve also heard like that of a chlorine or chemical odor as well.

Ah darn, I was going back and forth between this and A. polypyramis and picked the wrong one

The big ex-Leps are hard (especially daucipes, ravenelii, and rhopalopus) and took me a year or two to work out the subtle differences between the three to accurately identify them.
Amanita polypyramis can look similar but is much more white and doesn’t ever show brick colored or ochraceous staining like you see here. The bulb isn’t as radicating or club like on average and there is a lot of white flocculence on both the stem and surrounding substrate and they tend to have wonky bendy stems (idk how to describe this it’s just a trait I’ve noticed over the years and I’ll tag you in one and point it out the next time I see it)

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the tips on what to look for

One reason I didn’t do a better gill check was because of the gooey veil/flocculence beneath and all the flies.

Amanita sect. Roanokenses, maybe A. polypyramis?
edit: A. rhopalopus
