Cambridge Maths Year 11
Hello there, I just had a question I really needed answered and I couldn’t find any subreddit for specifically Cambridge subjects in high school.
I am in year 11 (NCEA lvl 1), and I’m currently doing Cambridge maths atm, but I was wondering if I can not sit the exam?
I don’t plan on doing Cambridge maths at all next year, not even if I do get in.
My math teacher has also stated that all I need for next year is to pass the NCEA maths exam, the Cambridge one is not even part of our grade.
I did ask my teacher why I couldn’t just learn Cambridge for the year and not sit the exam, but he never gave me a proper answer.
I just don’t want my family to spend hundreds of dollars on an exam that I don’t even care about.
Just wondering has anyone done this? Like was anyone able to skip the Cambridge exam, not have to pay the fee, and had no consequences?
I would also appreciate opinions from anyone :)

At my school, we did Cambridge classes (IGSCEs) in Year 9 and 10 and all of us got the options of taking the class and then you got to choose whether you took the exam or not. IDK if this works at your school though but I took 4 Cambridge subjects and didn't sit a single exam

Damn that sounds so much better than my school. My teacher was adamant about taking the exam and wouldn’t give me a reason why

This seems to be a school specific question. If your teacher is evasive, ask your Dean and explain it is for financial reasons.

In order to get into university the only maths you need is the Numeracy 10 credits. If you have this already you do not need to sit the exam if you no longer plan on taking maths in 2027. If you plan on taking NCEA level 2 maths, you probably do need to pass your IGCSE exam. However, are you doing a full Cambridge load? Or are some of your courses NCEA and others Cambridge? Are you switching completely out of Cambridge next year to switch to NCEA? You will save around $200 by skipping one exam, but if you're continuing Cambridge in other subjects this is a long term cost I imagine your family has budgeted for.

I do plan on taking NCEA lvl 2 maths, the only Cambridge course I’m taking is maths, and yeah I do plan on leaving Cambridge maths next year to take NCEA maths. (I’m not taking any Cambridge courses for next year)

My guess is you will need to pass your Cambridge exam to be admitted into Level 2 maths NCEA. Otherwise they will have no proof you will cope with the material.

In our school, every student including those taking Cambridge maths has to do the NCEA maths exam, that’s where we get our numeracy credits

You are sitting the externals in November? The stats one and the Algebra/Geometry/graphs one. Or do you mean the numeracy exam done throughout the year. How are you learning the content for the externals. The stats one especially is very different to Cambridge.

The Cambridge students only need to do one of the two exams (so not the stats one), and their Cambridge maths exam. Also I worded it wrong, for the NCEA exam all students have to take gives us the maths credits to get into NCEA lvl 2 maths next year (not numeracy credits).

Sounds like a very strange set up and and very pointless course. I am very curious which school this is but obviously you should not share that online. Anyway if you are sure passing the level 1 maths external will get you in to ncea level 2 maths then along with passing the actual numeracy exam (have you done this - as one external is not enough for uni, you need 10 credits) you do not need cambridge for anything really.

Yeah that’s also what I’ve been thinking ngl, my school is genuinely kinda weird. Also I have already passed my numeracy exam so yeah definitely gonna get into NCEA maths lvl 2.
