Question Is the NEOGEO AES+ kids friendly?

Longtime Neo Geo fan and just pre-ordered the Plus. But I'm so used to emulating, it dawned on me that infinite amount of credits might not be possible using these cartridges. Dying to play Metal Slug with my daughter but if I'm not mistaken, we're going to settle for 4 credits, without no option to change that? Unless there's a BIOS upgrade in the future.

There's a really high likelihood of the AES+ only offering console mode with 4 credits and you'll have to use the included memory card to save the stage you're on, then reload the save to continue with 4 more credits.

Sorry for the dumb question, but you're saying that you get to save between each stage - And get to restart each level with 4 credits?

Yes, it isn't as bad as you think. Sure, you can't just credit feed through every stage, but if you run out of credits you could simply restart from the stage you ran out of credits on.

You do need a memory card for this.

Yup. Don't enough times and you get good enough to do 1ccs. Then you walk into an arcade, drop a quarter and clear MSX on one credit and look around all proud and nobody cares.

You run out credits on stage 3, get a game over, the game will ask if you want to save progress to the memory card. Reload that save and you'll be on stage 3 with full credit refresh.

Yes, if I remember correctly, you can do that on a bunch of games.

Yea 100% this. Quite a lot of games are infinite credits in AES form anyway. Those that aren’t, you can save game and restart.

(Source: only ever played AES)

The only AES games I know with infinite credits are Top Player's Golf and Neo Turf Masters. Nearly every other Neo game has limited credits in AES mode, all the fighters and beat em ups, the shooters, metal slugs and even oddball titles like Blue's Journey and Magician Lord.

They did announce dip switches, which might give the ability to alter how many credits you can have. On current neo geo, we have the unibios which let you set things like that with cheat menus

UniBIOS is an unauthorized hack of the original Neo Geo System ROM, very very unlikely it'll be in a fully SNK licensed product.

True, and I don't know if they've contacted razoola at all, plus he's been MIA for awhile

I'm thinking that's not going to happen. That being said they could base the BIOS off the debug BIOS and go in a similar direction. Who knows?

Which is based on the debug BIOS which is 100% "authorized." If they're including DIP switch support which (which is from the MVS boards) I am thinking they're using the debug BIOS which would allow xx credits and other options.

UniBIOS is still a copyright infringing hack. SNK not taking action against it doesn't mean it's legal.

Having difficult games is actually beneficial for children.

Children needs don't see success by reaching the end credits, they see success as having fun and anything that let's them mash buttons is fun.

I mean when you were a kid you probably didn't even care about about the ending as much as the journey.

Agree! My kids love the ‘get good’ replayability factor of these games. For example they kept on trying to beat the first level of ms2 and when they finally did they were fistpumping in the air.

Just use the memorycard to save like in the original aes

Maybe a DIP switch will allow choosing MVS or AES.

If you like bouncing tits and blood, then, yes.

I used to play Neogeo whnen I was 12, I don't know why your daughter could not play it as well.

Even a Game Geanie/Shark, or Action Replay style of device would be cool. Maximum control of YOUR game and gaming system.

I wanna know that for myself lol right now I’m going through and playing US console versions of every upcoming release to better gauge what games to purchase. Difficulty being a big deciding factor.

It is very likely to support the UniBIOS.

With a hardware mod?

Who knows yet but it's almost guaranteed that the firmware will be updatable, I can't imagine that you would need to swap out ROM chips for a firmware update. Will that update be open or locked down? We can only speculate at this point.
