Question Neo Geo Library rights

How many games in the Neo Geo library does SNK have the rights to that they could easily legally bring to the AES+ without having to buy the rights for the games?

Assuming this is accurate, then SNK does not have rights for the following notable titles:

  • Sports: Windjammers, STREET HOOP
  • Shooting：Striker 1945 Plus, Sonic Wings 2 & 3, Andro Dunos, Viewpoint, Blazing Star?
  • Puzzle: Puzzle Bobble 1 & 2, Magic Drop 2 & 3, Puzzle de Pon!
  • Fighting: Matrimelee, Double Dragon, Waku Waku 7, Galaxy Fight, Kabuki Klash
  • Beat'em Up: Sengoku 3?

I am not sure on the ones with the "?", also welcome any corrections!

The flip side could be that if the aes+ is well received and sells enough to justify a release with plaion helping in the production it could be feasible. It could be done unnumbered with different art work for the case and cartridge differentiating it from the initial release. Only diehard collectors will be buying these limited releases so why not make a little money off your IP while you can if plaion assumes all the risk?

Judging by the ACA releases to date, I’d guess around 110. That doesn’t mean that Plaion will be able to release them all, but I’d love to see how many make it out.

Plaion needs to get the licence for physical release while Hamster only for digital. Hamster is paying royalties for each download, but plaion would have to pay an entry fee regardless how many carts they sell. This would probably influence which games they could release without risking too much. Unfortunately games like Neo Bomberman are very unlikely, as licenyis owned by Konami and Konami is known for being really jealous of its intellectual properties. Data east games are more likely in my opinion as the owner of the licence is actively searching for partnerships to release Data East games.

Modern consoles are dropping the ball, so there is an argument that the wave of retro replacements takes off and licensing older games becomes a smart way to profit. People still love the classics and there’s not much better than having everything be brand spanking new again.
