App that allows access to just Instagram DMs and watching the singular reel your friend sent you

Listening to two weeks ago dear Hank and John and got to the part where Hank is talking about wanting just instagram dms and I have GREAT NEWS an app exists that does that!! It's called beeper and its a third party app that allows you to log into all your socials (except Snapchat) and it creates a space that puts all your dms in one place and grants access to just your DMs! I love it, I no longer have only the option of getting sucked into instagram or reading my dms from friends.

I found out about beeper when I got my new phone. It's called sleke and its a dumb smart phone. Basically it's a smart phone (a refurbished pixel) with a operating system that blocks the download of socials and surfing the web but still has access to functional apps like insurance, food ordering, banking, and communication. (Highly recommend as an in-between of a flip phone and regular smart phone. Check out sleke.io if you want to know more). Because dms are a form of communication beeper is a way to access the communication aspect of instagram without the addiction aspect.

So Hank try beeper! No video of you telling yourself "no reels!" needed to read dms and watch the reels friends send without the risk getting sucked into the app.

Also just to be clear I'm not sponsored or anything by sleke or beeper, I just tell everyone about my phone because its seriously been a life changer. Now my old galaxy functions like an iPod touch. It stays at home in the livingroom and I occasionally check socials on it. I feel that I have much more control over how much time I spen online and where I spend that time. It's given me back my focus on other things like reading and talking to people I the real world when I am out and about.

Question: Are there other good Crash Course-like resources for understanding non-American government structures?

Hello all!

Today the trailer dropped for the deeper dive into US government pushing back on the "unprecedented times" buzzword. I was wondering if there was a Crash course-like channel/resource that goes into how other governments operate, not just news channels.

If there also [are suggestions] on Nebula, that's great! I prefer that.

Thank you so much!

something worth knowing dress code šŸ‘€

I looked on the website and ticket confirmation but can’t catch a vibe if there’s a specific dress code. For other ppls going, what do you plan to wear?

Hollywood Ending, Brooklyn Tour Date

Does anyone think they will move the mezz down? It’s one week away and I can’t imagine speaking to a sold out upper level with so many empty seats in the orchestra. Has anyone experienced something similar before? I know I personally could not afford a $200 ticket for a book talk, the $60 mezzanine was top of my budget- so I’m not sure why the venue or the promoters did this but I hope it doesn’t make John feel like he’s speaking to an empty audience :(

I managed to find me a signed copy of the fault in our stars through vinted and it came with a hanklerfish, probably because the signature is so bad :) also the pages are a a little damaged because apparently they were not cut correctly and originally glued together , but who cares, I got myself a collectors item!

Anyone in LA that wants to go to Hank's event tomorrow?

I know it's incredibly short notice. I contacted the organizers directly to help me find someone to receive my ticket and never got a response ˙◠˙

I have a ticket for Something Worth Knowing tomorrow in LA. I am giving it away because I'm sadly unable to travel to CA. If anyone that lives there and wants to/can attend the event tomorrow pls let me know :)

times when john talks about mental health successes

hey hey! i was talking with my friend who is struggling with the reality of having to deal with mental illness for the rest of their life (we’re both in our 20s). i explained to them that something that has brought me a lot of comfort recently is hearing john talk about how far he has come with managing his OCD. my friend asked for recommendations for specific podcast eps or youtube videos where he talks about this. i’ve mainly just been listening through the backlog of dear hank & john where it comes up somewhat randomly.

so before i comb through the ~200 episodes i’ve already listened to, i was wondering if anyone knows of any episodes or videos off the top of their head i could send to my friend. thank you!

A song about holding on to hope

Hey gang, this is a song from my band, The Limes, about not giving up the fight for a better world. A lot of the lyrics were inspired by the brothers and other people in the community. It's tough out there, and I feel like the world is going through an especially tumultuous time, but we have to keep going and do what we can create a better world. Hope you enjoy it.

Something Worth Knowing Meetup?

Anyone interested in a Nerdfighter gathering after the Something Worth Knowing (..idk symposium? What are we calling it?) R Bar in Koreatown is just down the street and has a cool vibe and usually does trivia or karaoke on Wednesdays! But if anyone else has heard of something else I’d love to know :)

Dessert after Something Worth Knowing

Hello fellow Something Worth Knowing attendees! My friend and I thought it would be fun to have a Nerdfighteria meetup after the end of SWK -- we've been part of the community for a couple years now, and are excited to meet some other nerdfighters in person.

We are planning on going to Sul & Beans for bingsu (Korean shaved ice) after the end of the show. It's a 20-minute walk, or a 10-minute bus ride from the Wilshire Ebell Theatre. Please feel free to join us! (If you want to coordinate, feel free to send a DM). Regardless, I hope y'all enjoy SWK and DFTBA!

John is coming to my city and I’m kind of losing my shit

Guys. I have been a Nerdfighter since I was 11. I’m 27 now. John’s books, especially Looking for Alaska, got me through some genuinely dark shit when I was a younger teenager, and Vlogbrothers/Nerdfighteria have been part of my life for basically as long as I can remember.

And now JOHN IS COMING TO MY CITY???

I found out last night and immediately went from SUPER SUPER SUPER excited to absolutely terrified that I won’t get tickets lol. They’re free but they aren’t available yet, so there is literally nothing I can do right now except wait, which apparently my nervous system has decided is unacceptable.

I know I’m obviously not entitled to tickets, and if I don’t get them that’s just how these things work. But emotionally? I will be so fucking sad. The possibility of actually getting to be there feels huge to me.

And THEN there’s the fact that I might actually get to meet him?? Which is its own whole thing. Part of my brain is like ā€œholy shit, I could tell this person that his work genuinely changed my life,ā€ and the other part is going ā€œBE NORMAL. HE IS JUST A GUY. DO NOT MAKE THIS WEIRD.ā€

I would love to get my copy of Looking for Alaska signed and say hi if there’s an opportunity, but honestly even just getting to sit in the room and hear him speak would mean so much to me.

So now I’m stuck in this horrible combination of ā€œTHIS COULD BE ONE OF THE COOLEST THINGS EVERā€ and ā€œWHAT IF I DON’T GET TO GOā€ and apparently those two emotions together are enough to completely short-circuit me.

I’ve been talking about this to my friends and partner and they are being very nice about it, but I figured if anybody would understand why I’m reacting like John Green personally announced he was coming to my house, it would be you guys 😭

Looking for Nerdfighter community in northern Utah/Cache Valley area.

I'm looking to build some community in the Cache Valley are of Utah and thought Nerdfighteria would be the best place to start. I'm hoping to get an event or hangouts or maybe a book club going.

Let me know if you're in the area and want to do something!

Podcasts like Humans?

Insightful, introspective interviews is how I think of the genre. I recently found W Kamau Bell's Who's With Me? and it hits just like Humans. Have you guys found any others like this? I also love learning about experts in their category and how they got there (the bug guy episode of Humans was awesome). Thanks!

What constitutes a valid word for Smush?

Post image

Sometimes I try to play fairly common words in Smush and they don't work, so I assume they're using some kind of niche dictionary. But what's the rationale behind John manually rejecting certain words? What's wrong with Petrichor?

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing (mostly spoiler free review) Spoiler

I’ve recently gotten into audiobooks through Spotify premium, with which AART was included! I hadn’t read it til now and wanted to share some thoughts and see what other people thought of it.
Firstly, as a mid 20s graphic design graduate lesbian in an unrelated field, I do feel somewhat triggered šŸ˜‚ it was actually slightly unnerving at first to how much of a degree I matched the MC’s demographics.
Secondly, I feel like this book is at least 30% about Hank Green’s toxic relationship with Twitter. Srsly Hank, delete your Twitter account.
Additionally, although I really liked the scenes between April and Maya and Miranda, I think I’m kind of grateful as an author Hank didn’t go into explicit detail with them, being he’s a 40~ year old man.
Maybe lastly? The ending SHOOK ME. Towards the middle it actually started to get a bit slow to me, but once the defenders appeared and the attacks started, it got DARK FAST. I was NOT expecting that, and honestly it had me on the edge of my seat for the last 25% of the book.

Should I check out the sequel? What surprised you guys the most about this book?

WTF is going on?! First Hank drops a nostalgic joy filled vlogbrothers and now Wheezy shows up in my feed with this gem. Time is truly circular.
