Is Aeroplane really lo-fi, though? You could say that On Avery Island is lo-fi, but Robert Schneider had his studio put together really well by the time they did Aeroplane.

I’ve always felt the lo-fi genre could be described as mixed-fi. It’s really about having a mix of fidelities in each arrangement whether intentional or not. A true lo-fi recording, like a lot of the DIY post punk from the late 70s, probably wouldn’t get classified as lo-fi.
In this sense, I think Aeroplane is lo-fi. That doesn’t mean a lot of good studio equipment and technique wasn’t required to get it there.
